Chapter 10 - I will focus on my job

As we sat in comfortable silence, the moonlight danced across Emily's face, highlighting the gentle curves of her features. Her eyes, though, seemed to hold a secret, a depth I couldn't quite reach. I felt my heart flutter as I wondered what lay beneath her gentle smile.

"Emily," I whispered, breaking the silence. "I've decided to stay in the estate and focus on my job, despite the strange occurrences. Can I trust you?"

Emily's gaze drifted toward the pond, her eyes following the koi fish as they swam lazily beneath the surface. "I'm not sure, Jennie," she said softly. "The truth you seek can be... overwhelming. Sometimes it's better not to know."

I leaned in closer, my heart racing with anticipation. "What do you mean ?."

Emily's voice dropped to a whisper. "You've seen things, Jennie. Strange things ..…..if you don't learn to ignore them now it might not end well for you . But be warned, the truth can be... costly."

I felt her words pierce through me as Emily stood up, her movements fluid and graceful. "Let's walk," she said, her eyes sparkling with a hint of mischief. "I want to show you something."

As we wandered deeper into the garden, the scent of blooming flowers grew stronger, and the sound of crickets provided a soothing background hum. We walked in silence, the only sound being the soft crunch of gravel beneath our feet.

Suddenly, Emily turned to me, her eyes locked onto mine. "Jennie, I want to show you a secret place," she whispered. "But you have to promise me you'll be careful."

I nodded, my heart pounding in my chest. "I promise. I'll be careful."

Emily smiled, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Follow me," she whispered.

As we turned a corner, a hidden clearing came into view. In the center of the clearing stood an ancient tree, its branches twisted and gnarled with age. Emily approached the tree, her hand reaching out to touch the trunk.

"This is it," she whispered. "This is the heart of the estate."

I felt a shiver run down my spine as I reached out to touch the tree. Something about it seemed... alive. And as I looked into Emily's eyes, I felt a spark of connection, a sense of belonging.

But before I could process the feeling, Emily's eyes locked onto mine, and I saw a flicker of fear. "Jennie," she whispered. "I think we're being watched."

I spun around, but the clearing was empty. The trees seemed to loom over us, casting long, ominous shadows on the ground.

"What do you mean?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

Emily's gaze darted around the clearing, her eyes searching for something. "I don't know," she said. "But I think we should get back to the mansion. It's not safe here."

As we turned to leave, I caught a glimpse of something out of the corner of my eye. A figure, watching us from the shadows. My heart skipped a beat as I grabbed Emily's arm.

"Let's go," I whispered, my voice trembling.

Together, we fled the clearing, the darkness closing in behind us like a shroud. But as we ran, I felt Emily's hand brush against mine, sending shivers down my spine.

"I'm scared," I whispered, my voice barely audible.

Emily's eyes locked onto mine, and I saw a spark of concern. "Don't be," she said softly. "I'm here with you."

As we reached the back door of the mansion, I felt a sense of relief wash over me. But I knew that this was just the beginning of our journey, and I was grateful to have Emily by my side.

"Thanks for showing me the garden," I said, my voice still shaking slightly.

Emily smiled, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Anytime, Jennie. Anytime."

As we stood there in silence , the moonlight casting a silver glow over us, I felt a sense of connection with Emily that I couldn't ignore. And I wondered if maybe, just maybe, this estate wasn't so bad after all.

"Goodnight, Emily," I whispered, my voice barely audible over the sound of my own heartbeat.

"Goodnight, Jennie," Emily replied, her voice soft and gentle. "Sleep tight."

I smiled, feeling a flutter in my chest. "You too."

As Emily turned to leave, I watched her go, my eyes lingering on the gentle sway of her walk. I felt a pang of longing that I couldn't quite explain.

I turned and made my way to my room, the silence of the mansion enveloping me like a warm hug. I closed the door behind me and leaned against it, feeling a sense of peace wash over me.

I walked over to my bed and sat down, pulling out my phone to check the time. The screen lit up, casting a soft glow over my room. I smiled, feeling a sense of comfort in the familiar glow of my phone.

As I lay down, I felt my eyelids growing heavy. The events of the night replayed in my mind, but I pushed them aside, focusing on the feeling of Emily's hand brushing against mine.

I closed my eyes, letting the memory wash over me. The sound of crickets and the scent of blooming flowers filled my mind, and I felt myself drifting off to sleep, a soft smile on my face.

As I slipped into unconsciousness, I knew that tomorrow would bring new secrets and new mysteries. But for now, I was content to rest, surrounded by the silence and the darkness of my room, with the memory of Emily's smile etched in my mind.

The darkness of sleep enveloped me, and my mind conjured a dream. I ran through the garden, laughter bubbling up from my chest as the warm sunlight danced across my skin. Roses bloomed around me, their vibrant petals swaying gently in the breeze. I twirled, feeling the delicate brush of petals against my fingertips.

But the garden shifted, like a painting smeared by wet brushstrokes. The sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the grass. A figure emerged, his eyes aglow like embers in the darkness. I tried to discern his features, but his face remained shrouded, a void where his eyes should have been.

He moved with silent purpose, his footsteps a mere whisper on the grass.

Suddenly, he was racing towards me, his eyes fixed on mine with an unnerving intensity. My legs responded sluggishly, as if rooted to the spot. I stumbled, my heart racing in my chest.

I jolted awake, my body slick with sweat. My heart pounded against my ribcage, and a scream built in my throat. I gasped for air, trying to shake off the remnants of the dream.

The room was dark, the only light coming from my phone's screen. 3:47 AM. The numbers glowed softly, a comforting presence in the darkness.

I threw off the covers and padded to the window. The estate was filled with warm gentle lighting , illuminating the trees, shadows stretched like skeletal fingers . I shivered, feeling a chill run down my spine.

The dream lingered, the image of those flaming red eyes seared into my memory. I felt a sense of unease, as if the darkness outside the gates was watching me, waiting for its moment to strike.
