Chapter 51 - Seneschal Lope

The adrenaline that had fueled their frantic attacks now receded, leaving behind a profound exhaustion. Wren leaned heavily against the rock face, his chest heaving. Torvin's legs buckled, and he sank to the ground, his Energy Spear clattering beside him. Naya, still clutching her Energy Shield, could only nod weakly, a wide, shaky grin spreading across her dirt-smudged face. Despite the bone-deep weariness, a palpable sense of pride and excitement radiated from the three young warriors. They had faced a formidable foe and emerged victorious, wielding strange new powers they were only just beginning to master.

Usato watched them, a genuine sense of pride swelling within him. They had shown courage, adaptability, and a fierce determination to protect their tribe. "Well done," he said, his voice carrying across the gorge. "All of you. You fought bravely and with skill. You have proven yourselves worthy of these new tools."

He then turned his attention to Vala, Wren, Torvin, and Naya. "Your task here is complete. Withdraw now and rest. You have earned it." His gaze then shifted, sharp and decisive. "Kael," Usato called out, his voice resonating with command, "prepare your team. You're next."

Kael nodded, his expression a mixture of grim determination and eager anticipation. He had witnessed Usato's strategy and the effectiveness of their earlier assault firsthand. Now, it was his team's turn.

"Bram! Finn! Jiro!" Kael's voice boomed, drawing the attention of his three trusted warriors. "We're up! Form up! Remember the Chief's plan!"

Bram hefted his sturdy wooden shield, Finn tightened his grip on his bone daggers, and Jiro adjusted the arrows in his quiver. A palpable sense of readiness emanated from them. They had observed Vala's team's fight against the monstrous ape, and they were prepared to follow the Chief's plan.

Just as Kael's team moved to the forefront, ready to advance towards the narrow pass, the strange, almost crystalline weapons held by Vala, Wren, and Torvin began to shimmer. The hexagonal shield in Naya's hands glowed softly, then dissolved into a cascade of tiny, sparkling lights that floated upwards and vanished. The slender bow Wren held crumbled into shimmering dust that dispersed into the air. Torvin's spear, still lying on the ground where he had dropped it, pulsed with an inner light before breaking apart into countless minute specks that swirled and disappeared. It was as if the very air absorbed them back into nothingness. These were the nanobots returning to their original, invisible form.

Usato watched Kael's team, his gaze lingering on their traditional weaponry. 'Sky,' he thought, 'time to rearm. Focus on their strengths this time.'

'Host,' Sky's voice echoed in his mind, 'begin the replication sequence. Observe their forms. The large one favors a sturdy shield for defense. The smaller one, swift movements and likely close-quarters combat with daggers. The archer requires a light, responsive bow. .'

Usato focused his intent, the nanobots within him stirring to life. A faint shimmer appeared in the air before Bram as a hexagonal shield began to materialize. It wasn't a perfect replica of his wooden shield, but the nanobots wove together a construct that felt remarkably similar in weight and size, with the added benefit of a subtle energy field humming beneath its surface for increased resilience. For Finn, two slender daggers formed, the hilts molded to fit the warrior's agile grip, the blades sharp and imbued with a faint, almost invisible cutting edge of energy. A sleek, dark grey bow materialized in Jiro's outstretched hands, lighter and more flexible than his traditional bow, with an energy nock that promised effortless aim. The nanobots, guided by Sky's analysis and Usato's will, had tailored the new weapons to the strengths and fighting styles of Kael's team, offering a familiar yet enhanced arsenal for the challenges ahead. Kael simply adjusted on his familiar Bastard Sword with confidence radiating from him while observing his team receiving their new weapons.

"Alright," Usato said, his voice low and tactical. "Conserve your energy. The other ape will be coming soon, led by Vala and Ren. Wait for my signal before engaging."

Wildbeast Border

'Months… months since those pathetic Evergreen insects were scattered. And in that time, how many more of these insignificant tribes have we crushed beneath our heel?' Seneschal Lope mused, mounted atop a heavily armored steed, as he surveyed the latest carnage at the Wildbeast Border. The final cries of the resisting 'River People' were finally starting to fade, replaced by the crackling of flames as their makeshift village was put to the torch.

'It all began with those Evergreen dogs,' Lope continued his internal monologue, a flicker of annoyance crossing his powdered face. 'Such pathetic resistance. Driven from their homes by the Bloodfang, whimpering for aid. And yet, their unexpected tenacity… that outsider, Usato, meddling with forces he couldn't possibly comprehend.'

He remembered the reports from his agents – whispers of unusual powers, strange energy weapons. He'd dismissed them as tribal superstition at first, but the alliance between the Bloodfang and the Silica Kingdom, aimed at securing this entire border region, had been complicated by the Evergreen Tribe's surprising survival. Their escape had forced him to waste precious months bringing the other smaller, recalcitrant tribes into line, culminating in this rather tiresome display.

Lope's gaze fell upon Thaggar, who moved with a certain eagerness amongst the Silica Kingdom soldiers. Thornek stood nearby, bearing the crude bandages from his encounter with Thorne.

'Soon,' a predatory gleam intensified in his eyes, 'soon the entire Wildbeast Border will be under our control. And those insignificant Evergreen whelps and their mysterious outsider will be nothing more than a footnote in the grand history of the Silica Kingdom's dominance.' He spurred his horse forward, eager to oversee the final stages of the tribe's annihilation. The message needed to be clear: surrender or be destroyed.

"Oh, ~~ boys!" Lope called out, his high-pitched voice taking on a playful, almost teasing tone. He batted his eyelashes at a group of nearby soldiers. "Do hurry along now! My lord is waiting for us, and you know how very… eager he gets!" A soft sigh escaped his painted lips as he thought of Lord Hugh, and he quickly licked his lips, a barely perceptible gesture of anticipation. Though still on horseback, Lope's feet danced lightly in his stirrups, a subtle, almost skipped beat that hinted at his inner excitement to return. The knights along with the surrendered tribal people shuddered.

Narrow Pass

Half an hour stretched on, the silence punctuated only by the rustling of leaves and the distant calls of unseen creatures. Kael and his team remained vigilant, their energy weapons held ready, their senses attuned to any sign of movement. The tension in the narrow pass was palpable, a silent anticipation hanging in the air.

Then, finally, the sounds of crashing undergrowth reached their ears. Vala and Ren emerged from the dense foliage, their movements skillful and practiced as they subtly guided a massive, burly Iron-Backed Ape towards the pass. The ape, clearly agitated, lumbered behind them, its red eyes gleaming with fury, drawn into the trap just as Usato had planned.

From his vantage point, Usato's voice, calm and clear, echoed through the gorge. "Kael! Now! Intercept the ape!"
