Orochimaru felt deeply unsettled. The Menma standing before him was more loathsome than he could imagine—worse than even himself. It was as though Menma could see right through him, like he was standing completely exposed and defenseless.
If it weren't for Kurama, Orochimaru would've attacked already. He couldn't wait to kill him and desecrate his corpse.
Just then, both of them sensed someone approaching.
They simultaneously turned in the direction of the presence. A moment later, Mitarai Anko appeared within view.
Menma: ￣□￣｜｜ Red Bean... Red Bean, why are you here so early...?
Menma looked at Orochimaru and said,
"Think about it carefully. I won't interrupt the reunion between a master and his long-lost student."
He vanished the moment he finished speaking.
After all, Mitarai Anko's former mentor was none other than Orochimaru.
Orochimaru: (╬◣д◢) You brat...
Anko had already caught sight of Orochimaru, and the curse mark on her neck reacted instantly—it was him!
She picked up her pace and quickly stood face to face with him.
"Why did you return?" she demanded. "You're already an S-rank criminal—an extremely dangerous man. Even if it costs me my life, I'll stop you here. Isn't that my mission? The student who received your teachings... the subordinate who once followed you?"
Anko held four flying needles, her sharp eyes locked on him.
"It's useless."
Orochimaru extended a massive tongue from his mouth and launched it at Anko at high speed.
She immediately dodged and leapt backward.
But the tongue whipped around again, this time wrapping tightly around the arm holding her needles.
In that instant, Anko extended her right hand.
"Hidden Shadow Snake Hands!"
Several snakes burst from her sleeve, launching straight at Orochimaru—and successfully restrained him.
With one swift motion, she yanked him toward a tree, slammed him against it, leapt forward, and pressed a kunai to his body.
"I've got you," she said with a smirk. "Orochimaru, I'll use your left hand for this."
She grabbed his left hand to form a hand seal.
"This seal…!"
"Yes. You and I will die here together."
This is my resolve.
But just then, Orochimaru's voice came from behind her.
"Are you really ready to die?"
Anko: (ω)!! Behind me?
She turned around quickly.
"It was just a clone," Orochimaru said calmly.
Anko looked back at the body she had pinned—and sure enough, it turned to dirt.
"You're a Special Jonin," Orochimaru taunted. "Even after all this time, you're still using the forbidden jutsu I taught you. It's no use."
Just as he finished his hand signs, Anko cried out in pain, unable to move.
Orochimaru slowly approached her.
"What are you trying to do?" Anko demanded, pained and struggling.
"Long time no see... Why so cold?" Orochimaru responded with a grin.
"Are you here to assassinate Lady Hokage?"
"No, no. The current Hokage is Tsunade—I have no such plans."
If it were the Third, that would be a different story…
Before the conversation could continue, a voice interrupted:
"Orochimaru, don't be so cruel to your apprentice."
A figure appeared between them.
"It's you again…" Orochimaru growled, glaring at Menma.
"Hi~ yep, it's me again!" Menma grinned. "So... what's your answer, Orochimaru?"
He had been nearby the whole time, watching the scene unfold. In just a few moves, Orochimaru had rendered his apprentice helpless—as expected. Menma had no choice but to step in.
"Red-haired brat, get lost!" Anko shouted.
Menma looked hurt. "Red Bean Examiner... I came here to save you, you know. And this is the thanks I get?"
He sighed dramatically. "Fine. After this exam, you owe me red bean soup and meatballs."
Anko: (ΩДΩ) What is this kid even saying? If he doesn't leave now, he's going to die!
Slap! Slap!
She found herself getting lightly smacked in the face.
Menma looked back at Orochimaru, still smiling. "So, Orochimaru. Still haven't answered me."
Kurama had already emerged and jumped onto Menma's shoulder, glaring at Orochimaru.
Orochimaru clenched his fists in frustration.
This brat...!
He stomped the ground in anger—then turned and fled.
Menma watched him go, smirking slightly. Run, huh? You think you can escape, Orochimaru?
But he didn't pursue him—yet.
Instead, he turned to Anko. "You alright, Examiner Red Bean?"
As Orochimaru disappeared, the pain in Anko's body began to fade.
She was stunned—completely speechless. (ΩДΩ)
What just happened?
Did Orochimaru... just run away?
Is that even possible?!
Did he seriously get scared off... by this red-haired kid?!
Just as she was about to speak, Menma placed a finger on her lips.
"Don't ask. I'm not telling you. As for Orochimaru—leave him to me. I won't let him ruin the Chunin Exams."
With that, Menma vanished.
Anko: o((⊙﹏⊙))o Vanished?! Who is he?!
A rustling sound echoed from behind. Anko turned to see several masked figures approaching.
They were ANBU from the Hidden Leaf.
"Examiner Anko," said the one in the fox mask. "We were sent by Lady Hokage to assist."
Anko nodded and pointed in the direction Orochimaru had fled.
"He escaped that way. Go after him. I'll report to Lady Hokage."
The fox-masked ANBU nodded and led the group in pursuit.
Meanwhile, Anko rushed back to the entrance—straight to the Hokage's Office.
She had to find out what the hell was going on.
Just who is that little red-haired brat who made Orochimaru run like a scared dog?
Inside the Hokage Residence:
Anko reported everything she had seen to Tsunade.
After hearing it all, Tsunade said,
"Then Orochimaru is officially Menma's responsibility now."
That brat… Tsunade grumbled internally.
He must've known Orochimaru had returned. So why didn't he report it?! What's that kid planning...?
"Shizune," she ordered, "Send word to Jiraiya. Tell him Orochimaru is back in the village."
If anyone should deal with Orochimaru, it's Jiraiya.
After a moment of silence, Anko couldn't hold back anymore.
"Lady Hokage… who is Menma Uzumaki? Why is Orochimaru afraid of him?"
"It's fine if you know," Tsunade said calmly.
"Menma is a perfect Jinchūriki—and his own strength is already on par with Kakashi."
