Chapter 10 - Monster Research Club

Standing in front of the clubroom, Alex swallowed all his saliva down and took a deep breath. He knocked on the door.

After several seconds of no reply, he knocked again. This time someone opened the door.

Now standing in front of him, who he assumed, was a first year student. The student was short, hat dark slightly wavy hair with a bowlcut, glasses and the regular school uniform for boys, except the tie it was comically short.

The boys eyes practically began to shine.

"You are the boy from last friday, right? My name is Ken, I am a first year student. Nice to meet you."

As thw by named Ken greeted Alex, he got uncomfortably close with every word he said. Alex slowly pulled his head away.

"Yeah, nice to meet you too." Alex said, while having a neutral expression on his face.

"If you want to join, please enter."

Ken went inside and stepped aside for Alex to enter. Alex sighed as he walked inside. Entering he heared a person on the right gasp.

"Hello Alex, did you change your mind? Did the study session you had last week while you were here, change your mind?"

As Alex looked to the side he saw Steph, sitting together with another first year. Before he could answer her, Steph continued:

"How are you by the way? I heared from your friend, Thomas, that you got sick. Hopefully you didn't get sick while searching for monsters."

Looking at Steph, Alex was a bit surprised. He did go outside for a monster, but not because he wanted to, no, because he was forced to.

"So, are you going to join?" Steph asked, with what Alex could only describe as puppy eyes.

"I don't know, maybe. I still have to think about why I should join."

"What do you mean, 'Why'? Because you love Monsters, right? You looked through our documents to still your thirst for monster Knowledge, have you not?"

"I did." Alex replied.'But not because I like monsters, I had to face one' finishing his sentence in his mind.

"I think it is better if I participate today and decide at the end if I want to join, if that is okay." Alex offered.

"Of course it is." Steph agreed with a hint of sadness.

Alex sat down at the table where steph and the other first year sit. After Alex sat down Ken did the same.

Ken immediately began to talk about monster. He fantasied about different Monster, especially about flying ones, like the griffin, dragon or tengu.

As the conversation continued, Alex learned that Ken beliefs in monsters, because he saw one a couple of years ago, or at least he believs that it was a monster. Ken isn't sure what typ of monster it was, he just knew that it wasn't completely human.

Steph also talked about her reasoning, she and her sister also saw one in the past, but the main reason is that her sister to this day talks about monsters. Her sister talks about monsters in different sizes, number of limbs and abilities.

The other first year, who's name was Sophie, she had red hair which were tied in a double braid, freckles, thick glasses and the standard girl school uniform.

She hadn't met any monsters, but she believed, that stories about monsters didn't come from nothing. Her believe is that they somehow hide in the masses of humans. As she talked, Alex noticed that she was really shy and stuttered a lot.

Alex thought about her idea which sounded more plausible than a rift connecting two places. He couldn't tell the three club members his encounter with the goblin, that ended deadly.

The third year talked about his fascination about monsters which came from video games, but he didn't say that he believes in monsters, even if he knows that they exist.

While the four student talked or more correctly, while Steph and Ken talked, the topic about the documents of the club came up.

Alex asked from where the club got their information. Steph answered that they researched different media to get their information.

The boy was not satisfied.

The information about the goblin was really accurate, more than just research of random media. The weaknesses were on point, but Alex paid this feeling of dissatisfaction no mind.

While going through the other documents more thoroughly, Alex realised that the information was just beneath surface level, but nothing clear.

The only monsters in which the club had information were the goblins and the kobold.

Alex realised that there were more goblin types or more like different colors indicating their strength. The boy felt really dumb because how did he not see that the last time he was here.

Looking at the document of the kobold. Kobolds looked like a mix of a human and a dragon. It was small like the goblin, had scales, a snout with sharp teeth, thin frame, but contrary to the goblin it wore armor.

Kobolds were listed for being cunning, not because of their strength.

After the four went through the document, Alex was the only one who was not excited. Not because that information could be useful, but because he was sure if that was real Information he had to fight one at some point.

Going through the other documents, Alex was sure if he was going to join the club.

As more time passed the conversation shifted to where only Steph and Ken would speak, Alex and Sophie were just listening.

Sophie was happy to listen to her interest, but Alex was just counting down the minutes until he could leave.

Several minutes before they had to leave the room because the time was up Steph asked Alex:

"Have you decided to if you would join."

"Yeah, I have…" Alex replied.

"And? I hope you join!" Steph shouted in an exciting tone, barely standing still.

"I will not join the club, but thank you for accepting my request."
