Chapter 13 - past, present, future

After 1 week

Leon's recovery was slow and exhausting.

It wasn't the first time he had been shot at, but now the situation has changed.

Anastasia, whom he loved, donated her kidney.

Every day, he felt a surge of gratitude towards her, watching her with a mixture of concern and admiration, knowing how hard her body was going through.

Anastasia

And so we were discharged from the hospital. Now we are still in New York and I like it here more than in Italy..

I can't stand the heat.. Eh...

this whole situation causes strange feelings and emotions in a dream.

Hell, even with that kidney, if his life consists of such dangerous things, then being exposed to it every time is fucked up...

Am I ready for this ?. And whether I need it ...

Leon

Lately, I've noticed that Nastya has become somewhat pensive, more and more began to read some books, shut herself in the room..

Strange.. It's the first time I've seen her like this.

"Dear?" He called softly, knocking on her bedroom door.

"May I come in?"

- Yes

Leon slowly opened the door and went inside.his footsteps were light on the floor.

The room was dimly lit, with only one lamp casting a soft glow on the leather armchair.

I found her curled up in an armchair, with a book in her hands.

"What are you reading?" "What is it?" he asked

sitting down on the edge of the bed that was closest to her. He didn't take his eyes off her, and his face showed concern as he studied her closely.

"Roman," I replied.

Leon raised an eyebrow, a slight smirk appeared on his lips.

"A novel?" - he repeated with a note of amusement in his voice.

"Since when did you start reading romance novels?"

- A long time ago, when we didn't know each other. I try so hard to immerse myself in my world.

Leon laughed softly, a warm smile playing on his face.

"Well, it seems you've always been a romantic at heart," he teased.

He met her gaze for a moment.

- But why do you want to immerse yourself in fiction so much?

Is something bothering you?

- There are moments, yes

Leon's expression turned serious when he heard the seriousness in her voice.

He moved closer to her on the bed, closing the distance between them.

"May I ask what's on your mind?"

"What is it?" he asked softly, without taking his eyes off her face.

"You've been kind of distant lately."

- What happened, this wound and the situation. What if you had died?

And to live in constant danger and tension is ... Terribly

Leon's expression softened even more, understanding appeared on it.

He reached out, took her hand in his and squeezed it tightly.

"Darling," he murmured in a soft voice.

- I know it was a difficult time. But I'm fine, I'm here.

And I'm not going anywhere.

"Leon, I do not know.... It's all very complicated...

Leon squeezed her hand, tightly but gently.

"What's the matter?" "What is it?" he asked, without taking his gaze off her.

"Talk to me, darling. I'm here and I'm listening.

- This whole situation and the fact that you are a mafia. It haunts me that at one moment everything can come to an end. And if we have children, will I be alone with them and you won't be around?!

What if you get killed? What am I going to do?! I know it's selfish, but I...

I won't survive this, Leon.

Leon felt a sharp pain in his chest as her words sank in. He understood her fear of losing him, of being alone in the face of an uncertain future.

"Darling," he murmured, still holding her hand tightly.

- I will not lie that I am a part of this world that puts me in danger.

But I assure you, I will do everything in my power to keep you safe, to keep us safe.

And I will always come back to you.

"And if you don't come back?" What then, Leon

Leon tightened his grip on her hand, pain showing on his face as he digested her words.

"Darling, I'll always find a way to get back to you," his voice was full of sincerity.

Whatever obstacles stand in my way, I will fight them with all my might.

You are my life, my love.

My world.

- Leon....

Leon's gaze met hers, and his heart overflowed with emotion.

"Yes, dear?" He replied softly, his voice even more hoarse than before.

I climb into his arms and say :

I don't want to go back to Italy.

I don't feel safe there.

Are we really going to move somewhere else or not?

Leon nodded, understanding her concern.

"We'll move to a safe place where we can rebuild our life together," he assured her.

Somewhere far away from this world and its dangers.

We'll start all over again.

- But what about your job and all this mafia stuff?

They will always haunt you.

Leon sighed, his expression becoming even more gloomy. He knew the truth of her words all too well.

"You're right, the past can overtake you," he admitted, without taking his gaze off her.

"But I will do my best to protect you, to protect us.

I will find a way to end this life, no matter what it takes.

I just need you to trust me.

Just believe in me, darling.

"I trust you, Leon. But if your life is going to be on the line, then it's better not, please.

Leon felt a pang of guilt in his heart as her words sank in. He knew that her concern for his safety was genuine, but he also understood that he couldn't just walk away from the life he had built.

"Darling," he began in a soft but firm voice,

"I can't promise you that my life won't be on the line.

But I can promise you that I will do everything in my power to stay alive, for you and us.

I don't say anything, I just start stroking his hair and soon we fall asleep..
