[Chapter 538: America's Got Talent Judge, Heidi Klum]
On July 13th, Linton Anderson and Heidi Klum wrapped up filming their last music video. After the shoot, Linton had Carson organize a wrap party for the crew, but he and Heidi left early, heading back to the estate.
During the drive, Heidi asked Linton, "Darling, MCA Television Network invited me to be a judge on America's Got Talent. Do you think I should take it?"
Linton was already well aware of the situation. The early rounds of America's Got Talent had sparked a frenzy, and MCA had high hopes for the upcoming semifinals and finals. Naturally, they were extremely careful when selecting judges. The ideal panel would be fair and unbiased but also include personalities with strong recognition, deep knowledge, broad experience, a sharp sense of humor, and enough star power to match the show's vibe. Their critiques needed to be compelling and entertaining to boost viewership and generate buzz.
Finding such a combination was no easy task, but there were several candidates. The producers had already brainstormed and narrowed down an initial list: a former British Daily Mirror editor, Piers Morgan; America's well-known singer and veteran actor David Hasselhoff; and Sharon Osbourne, a renowned Hollywood music producer, writer, and manager.
However, Melman, MCA's CEO, felt that while all three were respected experts in their fields with broad knowledge and sharp wit, they lacked the kind of fiery popularity and youthful appeal the show needed. Melman knew the hottest star in America at the moment was Linton, but inviting him to judge was completely out of the question -- he wouldn't even dare imagine it.
But then he remembered the dazzling "Angels" backing Linton, who had been riding a wave of immense popularity since April and were beloved by young audiences across North America. So why not choose one of these beautiful angels?
Still, not all of Linton's angels fit the bill. Top-tier stars like Madonna, Naomi Watts, Cristiana Reali, Sophie Marceau, Nicole Kidman, and Catherine Zeta-Jones were practically untouchable -- either way too expensive or beyond the scope of the role. Plus, Asian faces like Vivian Chow, Michelle Reis, Xu Qing, Izumi Sakai, Noriko Sakai, and Akina Nakamori wouldn't fit the cultural or audience expectations due to differences in background and appearance.
After much deliberation, Melman settled on Heidi Klum. As a Victoria's Secret Angel and one of Linton's own beautiful muses, her figure and beauty needed no introduction. Her popularity was through the roof among America's youth, and best of all, her fee was comparatively affordable. Modeling, even at the top tier, didn't pay like Hollywood stars. Though a leading supermodel, her asking price was less than many second-tier actresses.
MCA estimated she wouldn't cost more than $8 million for the entire season. While that was on the higher end, it was still within the show's budget.
However, there was one catch. The Victoria's Secret Angels were one of the hottest modeling groups, and the company kept them incredibly busy. According to her contract, Heidi had to participate in runway shows for at least 100 days a year -- and as the team's captain, her schedule was even stricter.
If she were to take the judge role, MCA would need to coordinate to avoid conflicts during filming. Still, that was manageable, especially with Linton as a major shareholder in Victoria's Secret. If Linton backed the idea, everything could be arranged.
To secure Linton's support, Melman personally came to the set to brief him on the situation. After hearing the report, Linton didn't oppose the plan but told Melman to get Heidi's opinion first.
...
Now, with Heidi sitting next to him, Linton saw she was clearly interested. "Sweetheart, what do you think?"
"Darling, I've talked it over with my agent," she replied. "Modeling is a unique business with a limited window for peak years. My time on stage can't last forever, so eventually, I have to transition. This opportunity to judge a big talent show feels like the perfect next step."
Linton was impressed. Clearly, she had a strong drive and wasn't just planning to coast. He smiled and said, "That's wonderful. If you like it, then go for it."
"Thanks for the support, baby... muah."
Linton smiled, already thinking ahead. If Heidi shined on the show, this could become a long-term platform, boosting her exposure and fame. He couldn't resist offering a little advice:
"Sweetheart, if you decide to go through with this, you should watch the previous episodes carefully. It'll help you find your own style."
"Style? What do you mean?"
"Usually, judges are experts who deliver deeply professional critiques and guide the audience to appreciate technicalities. But America's Got Talent isn't a specialized competition -- it's entertainment. So judges are more about connecting with the audience.
You could get emotional, inspiring contestants to share their moving stories. Or play the 'nice judge,' praising strong performances and gently encouraging the rest. You might even try the 'tough critic' role, pointing out flaws sharply -- but that requires care and substance, or it can backfire.
Whatever you do, avoid being a background filler who's easily forgotten."
Heidi nodded thoughtfully. "Thanks, I'll be careful."
"There's one more thing. As a judge, don't be too formal or distant. You need to relate to the contestants and viewers -- be approachable and down-to-earth. That builds affection and makes your feedback more effective."
"Wow, you're full of wisdom! What do you think suits me best?"
"Given your youth and beauty, I'd say the emotional angle fits you perfectly. Contestants who reach the semifinals usually have a story of hard work and sacrifice behind their talent. If you help bring out those stories, it'll add drama to the show -- and garner fans for yourself."
"Okay, that sounds great. I'll take that approach."
...
Soon after, MCA announced the judge panel for America's Got Talent:
Piers Morgan, former editor of the British Daily Mirror.
David Hasselhoff, renowned American singer and veteran actor.
And Heidi Klum, the stunning Victoria's Secret Angel and supermodel.
Their combined salaries were reasonable -- totaling $14 million, well within budget.
Piers Morgan earned $1 million.
David Hasselhoff $5 million.
Heidi Klum $8 million.
