Chapter 630: Isn't It a Bit Reckless to Install a Mod Just for This?

After even her final tsundere resistance faded away along with that barely audible murmur of protest, Irene finally let go of the last trace of dissatisfaction she had been holding onto. Instead, she began enjoying this rare date together with Steven.

And this time, there were no oblivious troublemakers showing up to interrupt them. They were able to stroll through the entire food street without incident, filling the little bird's stomach to the brim with all kinds of delicious snacks.

The only thing Irene couldn't bring herself to part with was the sugar painting she had bought from the stall at the very beginning—the one depicting the two of them together. She held it tightly in her hands the entire time, showing absolutely no intention of eating it.

"No matter how much you treasure it, it's still just candy. If you really take it all the way to Iberia, there's no way it'll survive the hot and humid climate there. At best, it might last a day before it starts growing mold."

Just by looking at the way she guarded it like a precious treasure, Steven could already guess what she was thinking. Even so, he still pointed out the cruel reality—it was only a piece of candy. Preserving it wasn't going to be easy.

"I don't care. I want to keep it as a souvenir... You're so amazing, there has to be a way, right?"

Irene hugged the sugar painting against her chest. The thought of it eventually rotting away was something she simply couldn't accept. This candy carried a beautiful memory for her. If possible, she wanted to treasure it like a priceless keepsake forever.

"Then you should've told me earlier. If I'd known, I would've dragged you into one of those gift shops and gotten you a plastic one instead. Then you wouldn't have to worry about it so much."

Seeing Irene's anxious expression, Steven couldn't resist teasing her a little more. Unfortunately, after hearing her displeased huff, he could only put aside his mischievous intentions.

"So you're saying even you can't do anything about it? But I really like it..."

Looking down at the candy in her hands, Irene knew her wish was somewhat unreasonable. No matter how capable Steven was, he shouldn't be able to change the fundamental nature of an object. Still, she desperately wanted to preserve this beautiful memory.

"I never said I couldn't do anything about it. It's just a matter of whether it's easy or troublesome. How about this—you give me a kiss, and I'll take care of it for you."

With a mischievous grin, Steven leaned closer to Irene and tapped his cheek with a finger before winking at her. His gaze lingered deliberately on her soft-looking lips.

Irene instinctively wanted to kick this shameless idiot, but she quickly stopped herself. Her cheeks flushed red as she looked at him expectantly.

After hesitating for a moment, she stood on tiptoe and gently pressed a tiny kiss onto Steven's cheek, leaving behind a small mark that belonged solely to her.

Already adorable to begin with, her shy, maidenly expression made Steven's grin stretch nearly from ear to ear. This kind of bashful cuteness from a girl was exactly the sort of emotional nourishment he loved most.

"Then leave everything to me!"

Puffing out his chest confidently, Steven took the sugar painting from Irene's hands. After examining it briefly, he already had a rough plan in mind.

Come to think of it, it had been quite a while since he'd installed a new mod. If he wanted to achieve the result Irene was hoping for, it didn't seem like anything he currently had on hand could accomplish it. In that case, why not take this opportunity to add a little more flavor to his life as well?

After doing a quick search through his mod library, Steven selected the mod he needed. Installing a mod just to make his girlfriend happy—this was honestly a pretty rare occurrence for him.

With a self-deprecating smile, Steven rummaged through his inventory and directly exchanged EMC points for the item he needed.

In front of Irene, he placed down a plain-looking gray-black square table. Rubbing his hands together like a craftsman about to begin a masterpiece, he carefully set the sugar painting on top.

"Let's see... Obviously I can't casually alter the candy itself, so I'll have to work with the stick. If I replace it entirely with paper, there should be enough room to expand things the way I need..."

The project was officially underway.

Muttering things that Irene couldn't understand, Steven took several sheets of paper and another small wooden table out of his inventory. Without any obvious action, he simply placed the paper into the table. When he took it back out, the sheets had somehow been transformed and rolled into a shape nearly identical to the stick at the end of the sugar painting.

"And what is that supposed to do?"

Leaning closer to Steven, Irene couldn't understand why he was doing something like this. She had expected him to pull out some miraculous item or use a mysterious power, but everything he was doing looked surprisingly ordinary.

"Of course it has a purpose. It's called adding an upgrade slot. You probably wouldn't understand even if I explained it. Just know that you're about to receive the one and only strongest sugar painting in the entire world."

Steven affectionately ruffled Irene's silver hair and winked at her mysteriously. This was only the preparation stage—the truly amazing part was still to come.

Of course, even when the mod's effects were revealed, there wouldn't be any earth-shattering visual spectacle. Most of the time, Minecraft's charm lay in its simplicity. The most overpowered things often looked completely ordinary on the surface.

Turning his attention back to the sugar painting, Steven placed both the paper stick and the candy itself onto the gray-black table. Then, as if performing a magic trick, he combined them together.

The original wooden stick vanished and was seamlessly replaced by the paper one Steven had just crafted.

But if that was all there was to it, Irene still couldn't see anything special about it.

"So this paper stick prevents decay or something? Does it have some special effect?"

Tilting her head slightly, Irene looked at Steven in confusion.

"No rush. Now comes the moment of truth."

Quoting a famous magician's catchphrase, Steven rummaged through his inventory for quite some time before finally pulling out five strange black slabs.

When it came to changing the properties of an item, there was probably no mod more direct and straightforward than this one.

That's right—the mod Steven had exchanged for was none other than one of the most famous beginner-level mods in the entire Minecraft community:

Tinkers' Construct.

With certain add-ons installed, Tinkers' Construct was no longer limited to the mod's original equipment and tools. The Tool Forge could even be used to modify all sorts of unrelated items.

As long as Steven was willing to spend the time, adding a bit of durability to this sugar painting would be trivial. Heck, he could just as easily give it Sharpness, Efficiency, Fortune, or Silk Touch if he wanted to.

And the item currently in Steven's hands was even more ridiculous.

These mysterious black plates could increase an item's durability modifier by one level. The truly absurd part was that once the durability modifier reached level five, the enhanced item would gain an incredibly powerful trait:

Unbreakable.

The name spoke for itself.

The item's durability would effectively cease to exist. No action could wear it down in the slightest. In other words, destroying the enhanced item through any physical means became completely impossible.

That was just how absurd this mod could be.

Of course, Steven hadn't installed the mod solely for this effect. Many of its other features were useful as well. It was just that, for the current situation, this happened to be the perfect solution.

Without hesitation, Steven upgraded the sugar painting—which already had an additional modification slot—to Reinforced IV.

Then, as he stared at the final level that still couldn't be added, he fell into brief contemplation.

As wonderful as the mod was, it came with costs.

For example, to apply the final upgrade, he would need yet another modification slot.

Changing the candy stick into paper had granted one additional slot, but the last and most crucial slot could only be obtained the traditional way:

By using the item repeatedly and allowing it to accumulate experience over time.

Holding up the sugar painting, which was now beginning to emit a faint glow, Steven presented it in front of Irene and raised an eyebrow, signaling for her to take a lick.

"Huh? Why?"

"Think of it as enchanting it. Just lick it."

While it would have worked just as well if he had done it himself, who knew whether Irene would mind? To avoid any unnecessary complications, it was obviously better to let her do it herself.

Though her eyes were still full of confusion, Irene obediently stuck out her pink little tongue and gently licked the candy.

The sweet taste of sugar melted across her tongue, drawing a satisfied smile onto her face.

Only after she finished did Steven lower his gaze to check the progress. Discovering that one more use was still needed, he brought the sugar painting to his own mouth and took a small taste as well.

The first thing he noticed was the ordinary sweetness of a somewhat cheap candy.

Yet mixed within it was a faint trace of Irene's fragrance, giving the flavor a strangely different quality.

Then, after Steven applied the final Reinforced enhancement, the sugar painting in his hand instantly seemed to acquire an indescribable aura.

If he had to put it into words, there was only one suitable description:

Indestructible.
