Chapter 2 - Chapter Two: Experimenting

Since it was Sunday and he had nothing to do, Peter spent the rest of the four hours needed to complete his daily quest lazily soaking up the UV.

When it was completed, and he received the glorious notification marking his first actual step toward greater power, he reluctantly went back inside.

He decided that now was the perfect time to experiment with his [Inventory] since he couldn't do it while he was on the balcony.

Peter began with some cutlery, wanting to see if items in his inventory stacked and if he could find any loopholes intentionally or unintentionally left within.

He tested how to place things in and take things out of the [Inventory], which was very user-friendly.

To place an object inside, he only needed to touch it and think about what he wanted before it disappeared from his hand and materialised in his [Inventory].

The process was reversed to remove the object from his [Inventory].

Once that was sorted, his first experiment with the cutlery revealed that objects of the same general size and material composition were stacked.

The limit was 20 before a new grid space was taken up.

If the objects were the same shape but a completely different material, they wouldn't stack; instead, they would use a new grid space, which was probably obvious in hindsight.

After that experiment revealed expected but necessary results, he entered his room and began packing a suitcase.

He was going on a trip to visit his only cousin in a small Californian town, so this had two purposes.

One, he needed to pack anyway as he would be leaving in a few days, so this gave him an excuse to do it now instead of at the last minute, and two, he wondered something.

If he put all his clothes, personal effects, and belongings in a suitcase and stored it inside his [Inventory], would it stay in one grid space?

If it didn't, how much space would it take up, or would it refuse to accept it because there were more individual objects, including the suitcase, than grid spaces?

As it turned out, the system split objects containing other objects into at least three separate parts. When you try to remove one part, you remove them all as they are "one" object.

Once that was figured out, he reasoned that was the limit of what he could experiment with, at least for the time being, so Peter decided to try his Draconic Transformation skill.

Not intending to fall unconscious and perform a "Full Use" just yet, he tries to use the skill instinctively, hoping he doesn't have to rely on the system to use these skills.

No matter how hard he tries and searches within himself, he reluctantly fails to use a skill without the system.

So he thinks about the skill "Draconic Transformation", directly accessing the [Skills] section.

When he does, he feels a change overtake him and decides to head into the bathroom.

As he walks there, pain courses through his fingers and eyes, nearly blinding him as the first few transformations prime his body for painless shifts in the future.

The first thing he notices once he's standing in front of the mirror is his eyes. His once-blue iris has turned a stunning silver, blending so perfectly with the white in his eyes that it's nearly impossible to tell the difference.

Realising something as he stares into the mirror, Peter wants to check it out, so he closes the door and turns off the light, hoping he's right.

As the room becomes enshrouded in darkness, he at first can't tell the difference, as he can still see perfectly what's around him, but he realises his silent assumption was right; he has gained a form of night vision.

He decides to stay in the dark before returning to the mirror and looking into the other change in his eyes.

His once perfectly round pupils have elongated and turned into reptilian slits, denoting his draconic nature.

However, he's sure people would confuse him with a snake.

Another thing he notices is the glow his eyes release, which Peter notes would be scary to see suddenly in the dark.

From there, he looks at his fingers, where he had felt pain during the transformation, and sees that his nails have darkened at the bases and extended into razor-sharp claws.

Deciding to test their sharpness, he leaves the bathroom and finds a sheet of paper to cut.

Though Peter knows it won't be a true test of his claw's sharpness, it will nonetheless be a satisfying test.

When he gets a piece of scrap paper, he holds only one corner before sliding the hopefully sharp side of his nail down the paper.

Instantly, he knows he was right as a pleasurable shiver crawls up his spine.

The paper is easily cleaved in two; the part not being held falls to the floor the second he finishes cutting through it.

Happy with this, Peter puts both pieces into the bin before returning to his balcony so he can continue to bathe in the sun's light.

He opens the system again, checking the main screen to see that he can allocate 4 free stat points however he chooses.

Peter assumes he got them when he somehow levelled up while unconscious. Still, it happened while he was unconscious, so he realises he won't get an answer to his unexplained level-up.

So, he begins to consider which of his stats he should improve.

Peter knows he can improve them all at once, but doesn't know where to use the fourth free stat point.

So, he decides to save it until he sees the effects that increasing each stat brings; the first stat point he invests in is his strength.

He accesses the system, mentally commanding one of the free stat points to be allocated.

The system quickly responds, confirming my decision.

[Are you sure you wish to allocate 1 stat point to strength?]

[This decision is irreversible!]

[Please choose one: Yes/No]

Peter is sure of this decision, but thankful that the system helps him in this minor way, so he mentally selects "Yes."

[Strength: 10 -> 11]

[Stat Points Available: 4 -> 3]

He watches as the system adjusts his strength, feeling a rush of power flow through his body.

Despite not knowing its accuracy, Peter feels he is roughly 10% stronger.

Though he did increase his strength by one, which in this case is 10%, he didn't think it would be such a one-to-one representation with reality.

Curiosity makes him consider what would happen if he added another stat point.

Would each stat allotment equal the 10% increase of the base 10 each time it is used, or does the boost change the higher his strength is?

Knowing he needs an answer, while also considering all his options before making a decision, enhances his agility next.

The same confirmation message from the system appears again, and he presses "Yes".

[Agility: 10 -> 11]

[Stat Points Available: 3 -> 2]

A similar change happens once more.

Again, Peter feels a 10% improvement and decides to improve his endurance without wasting a moment.

Wanting to ignore the system, as it should convey a similar message, he nearly regrets that decision.

[Endurance: 10 -> 11]

[Stamina: 100 -> 110]

[HP: 15 -> 20]

[Stat Points Available: 2 -> 1]

Seeing that increase and knowing the current importance of stamina for his only active skill, he knows where to place his last free stat point.
