Though the elders were believed to have come into existence without being made or born, it was a misinformation that came close to the truth, but not entirely.
Right from the beginning of time, there were no rulers in the world of the reapers; everyone was equal in position, though some were naturally stronger than others. It was not until later that the reapers decided to select from the strongest among them to become rulers. However, they could not simply choose, so they issued a challenge instead.
Since that time, demons had been known to cheat death, making it impossible to take their souls. Knowing this, the reapers decreed that whichever among them succeeded in perishing a powerful demon's soul would become an elder, the first Grim to ascend the throne.
