Chapter 237 - Chapter 237

Adam was surprised that the group had found a number of things from the list, not just Remington's list but his other lists as well. He found a few spare parts for his APC namely a new tire that he could use to replace the one that was punctured, he found more than enough protectron parts to repair both robots, some pieces from various broken Mr. Handy that he hoped was enough to fix the Mr. Gutsy as well as a number of other odds and ends. Including a jukebox which he had joked about earlier, perfect for the common room in the vault, a nuka cola vending machine that seemed to be in good enough order that it might be worth bringing back too, and a few extra computers that, baring any way to test them right now, could at least be used for parts if needed.

However none of that was the biggest find. No, in fact it was Eve who stumbled upon the biggest gain of this whole adventure.

"Adam~" Eve called out playfully as the group was near wrapping up, Adam having felt satisfied with his finds.

"Yes?" He asked as he walked over.

"I think I found something you might be interested in." She said as she motioned to a nearby pile of scrap. At first he didn't see anything other than the junk of the scrap but then he saw it, an arm of something that might be the greatest find in this scrapyard.

"Is that…" He asked aloud to which Eve nodded.

"Indeed it is~ With any luck it's in working order too." Adam nodded back and then got to work unearthing the hidden gem from all the junk covering it. It took a bit of effort, as it was very buried, probably years of junk thrown on top before the world even ended, however as more and more was revealed it was clear that this was to its benefit. It showed very little rust and damage of time, though it was, of course, not in the best shape. As Adam stepped back he admired Eve's find. A sentry bot. Though this sentry bot was specifically a Mark I.

Sentry bots were, by the time the world ended, commonly seen rolling around on three wheels, armored, with a head on top of their frame and guns for hands. This was the standard that anyone would recognize as a sentry bot. However this was not the first robot to bear the name. In fact it was the second. However when Robco released the Mark II it chose to also call it simply a 'sentry bot'. Why they did that is unknown to Adam, perhaps Robert House wanted to do some clever marketing scheme or perhaps they were just stupid. Both are equally possible. However the Mark II was immediately super successful and quickly pushed all Mark I's out of service. By the time Adam was in the service the Mark I was already being called obsolete. By the time the world ended the Mark I was not used in the US military in any active role. The only ones they still maintained were in storage. Suffice it to say that the Mark II was more successful in every way.

The key design elements of the Mark 1 Sentry bot were completely different from the mark II. For one the robot did not have a tri axle wheel system, instead it had a bipedal means of movement, sturdy thick legs not too different in design to the protectron models. In fact it is safe to assume that, due to both being developed by RobCo, this is exactly where the design for the legs came from. The Mark I also had thicker arms, a wider chest, a back panel flame exhaust port, and a more distinctly shaped head protruding forward from the chest, rather than placed atop like the Mark II.

In almost every meaningful way the Mark II was better. It was cheaper to produce, offered almost the same level of protection, was faster, more maneuverable, easier to maintain and repair, and had a more advanced on board AI. It was simple math for the US army and companies to ditch the Mark I for the superior version. However the Mark I still had its own advantages.

While it was slower and less capable of maneuvering than the Mark II, moving very similarly to a protectron, with only less of a waddle, it had extra armor, a more protected core, a sturdier visual scanner, and it had even more options for its armaments than the streamlined Mark II.

This one standing upright in front of Adam was armed with a tribarrel laser gatling gun with a higher firing rate than a Mark II was capable of having, and a 6 pod missile launcher, far more than the single missile barrel of a Mark II.

However, while this was the greatest boon he had found here there was one last issue with the Mark I. One issue that might make any endeavor to make use of this monster of the Old world. It did not use fusion cores.

The Mark II, among its various benefits, was powered in a similar fashion to power armor, one slotted fusion core in its back and it would spring to life with enough power to function nigh indefinitely. However the Mark I was not so lucky. Instead it used some sort of proprietary RobCo battery that no doubt would be incredibly hard to find or replicate. Luckily, the principal of the battery was a proto-fusion core. Effectively it was a bunch of fusion batteries wired to work in tandem. Adam might be able to approximate it but there was no telling if he could get it to work properly. However regardless of all of that this was an insane find. If he could get it to work this robot alone would bring more firepower than perhaps his whole team combined. And more than all of that he would love the challenge to bring this beast back to life.

Eve chuckled a bit.

"I see you like it~ I can see your eyes sparkling from here." She teased gently.

"I just… never expected to find something like this here." Adam said a bit giddy.

"Well who knows if it even works." She said with a shrug. "But if it makes you happy…~" Adam laughed softly and then turned to Eve.

"Well, now all we need to do is move it into the APC." He grinned.
