Chapter 37 - Time is of the Essence

Things were going great with Vicky, Logan, and Sil. At least Vicky was able to recover from her hangover pretty quickly— unlike Sil who's head hurt nearly all day. Logan was simply not at the party due to being busy with politics, so he avoided all the morning drama.

They decided to try out the wax strips that Vicky gifted him a while back on his legs. Sil managed to hold back his screams as Logan ripped the strips off, giving him soft silky smooth legs. The couple took turns touching his legs, feeling just how hairless and smooth they were.

Vicky and Sil later went out in public to go clothes shopping, which ended up in them having an impromptu fashion show and buying out half the store. Sil now had several stylish outfits to choose from, and tried to flex his new suit in front of Logan, only for him to custom tailor himself a new one on the spot using his spiders that looked far more impressive.

Sil had so much fun with his sister and brother-in-law, that he had completely forgotten his mission— so when Logan brought up that he had finished his ship for space again, Sil wasn't quite sure how to respond.

"What appears to be the issue?" Logan asked.

"I- Well…" Sil didn't know how exactly to put it into words. The sudden news did shock him.

"Did you forget about your vision?" he responded.

"I did, but…" Sil almost didn't want to remember it, "I should check it again, just in case. Who knows, maybe spending 100 years in space was enough to complete it."

He took out his soul weapon, the multicolored book that had a slight glow to it, and flipped through his most powerful abilities before finally picking the last one he needed, foresight.

Pooling all of his MC cells into that last ability, he looked as far into the future as he could. He most likely didn't need to do so as it had been about 100 years since then, and had gained a few nest crystals. Either way, what Sil saw was not good. It was the same vision, albeit slightly different, of celestials coming to earth and attacking humanity.

When Sil came to, he was in a cold sweat, and his face must've looked horrified with how Logan had a concerned face.

"What did you see?"

"I… I'm not done."

Sil already had plans on leaving, but he was so close to forgetting about all of them. He was a little foolish to think that his mission would be done, but here he was… laying on his bed contemplating everything. A thought had come to mind about leaving without telling anyone so they wouldn't worry, but there was no way he could do that as they would just worry anyways.

'That's dumb,' he thought.

Either way, the Blade members that he was close with were going to find out, and it wasn't something he was looking forward to. Sil could leave a message to Shiro, Vorden and Raten. He was sure that they would understand the situation— they've once shared bodies before. They always had an understanding with him.

He was not quite as close as he was to Pai and Borden, so they could get the news second hand. What he wasn't really looking forward to was telling Vicky. He was thinking about the best way to tell her, someplace where they could meet up, and ease the information into her.

Before any concrete ideas could be made, Sil found Vicky barging down the door of his bedroom. She gave a deathly glare with gritted teeth.

"The fuck you mean you're leaving?!" She yelled, stomping her foot down.

Sil was taken aback, "How'd you find out?!"

Vicky walked up close to Sil's face, "Don't change the subject! Why are you leaving!?"

He didn't know how exactly to word it properly. He opened and closed his mouth a few times, struggling on how to explain it so it would hurt less.

Vicky took a step back, there was that look of pain on her face, she would be hurt regardless of what he'd say.

"Why would you go back there? It's hellish, and you nearly died— twice!"

Sil managed to figure out his words, and began to sit upright, "Vic— do you think I want to go back? I loved being here with everyone, it's one of the best times of my life."

Sil let out a heavy sigh, "But my vision— My mission— It's still not enough!"

Vicky crossed her arms and leaned in, "You've been out there for a hundred years— don't you deserve to rest!?"

"I already did. I need to go back."

"But— "

"Vicky. I need to go back, I need to solve this— Who else could do this job?!" Sil then stood up from his bed, and gestured to himself, "ME! It's ALWAYS ME! I'm the one with the soul weapon— the gifted kid with SIX abilities— it has to be me Vicky! I have to protect everyone I care about— no one else could do it! Quinn is gone, and I have to protect everyone like how he managed to do it! I will do anything to protect your future, Vicky! For Pai, Vorden, Raten, the Blades— fucking everyone on earth!"

Vicky stepped back, a little speechless. They stared at each other for a moment, before she began to speak again, worry etched in her eyebrows.

"But who will protect you , Sil?"

"...What?"

"Who will protect you? If you're out there— alone— fighting these– these– whatever you're fighting! If you're out there alone— who is going to have your back? When you're too tired, too injured— when your ship is breaking down— when you just need someone to talk to— will you allow yourself to get help?"

Vicky's body was tense, but as soon as she was done, she began breathing heavily, and her muscles relaxed. Looking down at her hands, they were clenched into fists. Vicky's face scrunched, tears welling up in her eyes as she was not quite looking at Sil.

"... How can I protect you if you're out there alone?"

Sil didn't know how to respond. How could he? She had reason to believe all of these things because she was right. Everything had happened before— they were all recorded in his logs.

Vicky was trying her hardest not to burst out in tears. Instead, she closed her eyes, and faced her body away from Sil.

"Well?" Vicky's voice cracked.

"I'll figure something out, I always do. If I need someone, I'll come back."

"... And if you don't?"

"... I… I can't promise I'll always come back… that's impossible Vic…"

"Then… don't go."

"I have to."

"Please…" Vicky's breath heaved, tears staining her face. "Please stay…"

Sil looked down, feeling shame for being the reason his sister wept. He couldn't look her in the eyes, if he did, he would stay.

"...I'm sorry…" he said as he walked around his big sister, leaving her alone in the room to weep.

Sil really didn't want to leave, especially not when there was something unresolved. It reminded him of what happened with Quinn— how there were so many things he wanted to say, but couldn't.

Not anymore.

Sil blinked, shaking his head trying to rid himself of the thought.

Quinn was gone.

At least— that was what Sil told himself— because there was no one else who could protect earth; and if Quinn was still alive, then he would have to stay.

Sil was currently not inside the Green mansion, but still on the estate as the land had several gardens, a few small forests, and a water tank in the middle of construction. At the moment, he sat in one of the forests; under a tree on a small hill. The sun was setting casting an orange glow, and today was the day Sil would leave.

The blonde haired man stared at the mansion, contemplating. Sil wanted to stay, he wanted to stick around and find out where he went, but if Logan still wasn't able to find him after all of these years, then it was going to take too long to stick around for. The moment he began searching for Quinn, he wouldn't stop until he did, and that is exactly what earth couldn't afford.

He kept thinking about it, and the idea of leaving didn't get easier. Instead, Sil decided to focus on Vicky— that much he could do. He needed to talk to her before it would be too late.

He got up from his spot under the tree, and started teleporting around the estate to find his sister. Instead, he found Logan first. He was currently near a water fountain on the west side of the Green estate with his son, Jake. His son was fast asleep being carried by a nursing robot that was far taller than Logan, even with his new high heels.

"Logan, do you know where Vicky is?"

Logan looked around the estate, calculating where his wife went, then back to Sil, "I believe she's on the roof. She likes to go there when she needs to think alone."

Sil nodded with a soft smile, "Alright. By the way— thanks— for everything."

And he was gone.

Logan stood there in slight confusion before returning his attention to his son, who just happened to make those familiar baby noises in his sleep.

"Alright little guy… no more nightmares," Logan said while gently lifting Jake from the nurse bot and cradling him.

—

The roof of the mansion was a dark sea green color for its roof tiles, and a cool grey for certain flattened spots. In that moment, Vicky sat leaning against the air conditioner exhaust. She was looking out to see her husband spend time with their child in the distance.

A thought came across her mind, about how she might not be ready to be a role model for someone so vulnerable just yet. Vicky had plenty of issues, and given both her and her husband's power, it was merely a given that their child would grow up to be the next strongest human, just like his grandfather.

He already was a prodigy at his age. Would it be selfish to put him into cryosleep until she was ready? It was the closest that they had to eternal slumber for humans, and the most he'd lose out on were years he won't even remember.

Vicky held her legs tighter around her arms. It was a silly thought— selfish even— and it was distracting her from the real problem at play with Sil.

Suddenly, she heard footsteps behind her and turned around at the sound. Vicky saw him, her younger brother with a shaven face.

"Vic…" Sil began.

"Sil," Vicky acknowledged.

"I'm going to be leaving soon, and I wanted to say goodbye before I went."

Vicky sat there, not turning back to face him. She didn't want to because that would mean that she would accept the goodbye.

"..."

"Well…" Sil awkwardly coughed into his arm before preparing to teleport away, "I guess this is goodbye—-"

"Wait— Don't go— not yet, I still want to say something," Vicky said, immediately getting up from her spot, and reaching an arm out to her little brother.

Sil turned around, his eyes meeting hers. They held an intensity to them, a thousand words of how she felt. It was clear as day that she wanted to say so many things, things like her fear of them growing apart, or how she won't be there to protect him when he's alone, but decided against it. There was already enough on his mind.

Vicky's mouth opened finally, "Please… take care of yourself."

Sil gave her a soft smile, "I will," before teleporting away.

Sil teleported inside the cockpit of his spaceship. It was located on a part of the Green estate that had several other ships. Quickly without thinking much on it, he had already created a few clones to work around the controls to get the engines online, elevating the spacecraft off the floor.

Once he was high enough, Sil looked out the window and could see Vicky on the ground with Logan and Jake near the water fountain. She either jumped down or must've had the teleport ability copied to get down so quickly. By diverting qi to his eyes, he could get a closer look at them.

Both Vicky and Logan were waving goodbye, with Logan even moving Jake's arm. The sight brought a bittersweet smile to himself, but he planned on coming back one day. In a hundred years or so, he'll be able to reunite with them all. Maybe then he'll actually be complete with his mission and stay.

He let out a breath of air, it never did get easier saying goodbye to the ones he loved.
