Chapter 95 - Ch. 98

"It's vague and stupid."

"Exactly. Unless you pay your weight in blood and bone, there's no guarantee you get anything legitimate. And your prophecy is vague as hell, Harry. It could be as simple as us hunting down the horcruxes on your behalf which means you qualify as the one to kill him. Now, don't get me wrong, if Voldemort thinks it's legit, that's another matter of itself. But you don't have to do anything. I'll scatter his bones across the planet and feed his soul to the dementors and that will work well enough if I have to. And if you do end up in a direct fight, then it sounds like you've been granted the means with which to kill him permanently."

"Yeah, about that. I have a lot of questions," Sirius said. "Was that actually Death? The real deal?"

"Of course, it was the real deal. He's a necromancer!"

"Okay. But that doesn't mean that it offered Harry power with no strings attached. You mentioned the Master of Death, what does that mean exactly? Does that make him literally its master? How much power are we talking about?"

Harry wasn't sure either, so he perked out of his blankets to listen.

"No, no. No one can be Death's master. That is a misunderstanding of the name. Master of necromancy would be more apt. It is believed the items themselves are more symbolic in their relationship between necromancer and Death versus literal functionality. The stone represents a necromancer's skill with raising the dead, the cloak with becoming one with darkness, and the wand with one's power and ability.

No one is certain of the full extent of their function. While powerful, they are only as strong as the person who wields them. They would be helpful, surely, but not enough on their own to overpower Voldemort. The caveat is that they are gifts. To gain all three is to gain Death's favor, and with that, untold power."

"Okay, but I know the story. Death tricks the Peverell brothers into accepting them, they aren't gifts, they're curses." Sirius argued.

"That is a children's story, Sirius. Honestly. The first two brothers died because they were arrogant, and thought themselves better than Death. That is the greatest mistake a necromancer could make. Death comes for even the most powerful. It was not the items themselves that cursed them. Ignotus Peverell was cunning and prolonged his death, but he did not fear its arrival.

I do not claim that this is a pure blessing. It is power, and that always has downsides. But it is power Harry needs to get through this mess."

"I don't like how vague it was. We don't know what it wants in return. That could be anything." Sirius huffed, his voice was getting a bit heated.

Mama waved away his concerns.

"You are not a necromancer, you don't understand. Yes, there will be a cost. But Harry is already in its debt. He has already been touched, he is a necromancer. There is no way to usurp the Killing Curse. I don't know what ritual Lily Potter did, but it would not have worked had Death not wished for Harry to live. Death is not cruel, I do not think it would trap Harry into a tormentuous deal."

Sirius thought that despite Alabasandria's usual cool logic, she was a bit of a lunatic when it came to Death. There was absolutely no way, in his mind, that any of this would turn out fine at all. But he did not want to increase Harry's worry, so he calmed himself and turned to the boy who was still huddled under the blankets.

"What do you think of it all?"

"I dunno," Harry said succinctly. "It said we would be like partners in crime. And it seemed… well, I'm not sure if nice was the right word, but easygoing? It was a casual conversation when it wasn't going on about destiny and whatnot."

"Okay, I will suspend my disbelief about the power of the Hallows and about Death for now. How would we get the Stone and the Wand without angering Dumbledore?"

"Oh, we'll have to kill him!" Mama said. Sirius sighed.

"That's risky. And he knows about the horcruxes, we will need his help."

"We can try to get his help, but how are we going to explain to him how I knew about horcruxes? Necromancy is a taboo subject. To even know the word is suspicious enough. Albus Dumbledore is no fool, and he was already weary of me. This has increased that concern tenfold. The longer he lives, the longer he has to formulate a plan against us."

"If we gather the horcruxes with Dumbledore then Harry won't need the power boost against Voldemort," Sirius argued.

"And if Dumbledore kills Harry or I first then we'll have to flee the country to be resurrected and he'll have to forfeit the tournament and lose his magic," Mama argued back.

Sirius opened his mouth to say something back, the two of them passionate about their opinion being the correct one, when he thought over her words a little more and paused.
