đ POV â Daniel (the boy)
The war smoke hadn't even left my armor when I stepped off the convoy. The city gates opened wide for us, banners raised, citizens chanting Blackwood forever. My men peeled away toward their quarters, but I didn't.
I had one destination.
Home.
The minister's house. My father's house.
I didn't send word ahead. No trumpet. No announcement. Just me, carrying my rank's weight in silence.
The gate guards stiffened as I passedâthey recognized me, but none dared to stop me. I pushed the heavy doors open and stepped inside.
The sound of plates clattering came first. Then my mother's gasp.
She dropped the tray she was carrying when she saw me. "DanielâŠ?" Her hands covered her mouth, tears brimming instantly. "YouâYou came backâ"
I knelt before her, lowering my head. "Mother. Forgive my absence. Dutyâ"
She pulled me into her arms before I could finish. Her embrace was warmer than any battlefield fire.
Then a shadow moved at the hallway's end.
My father. The minister.
He didn't rush. He didn't cry. He stood tall, arms folded, his face unreadable.
"Back already?" he asked, voice flat. "Or was it too easy?"
I straightened. My uniform gleamed, my insignia catching the light. "We won. Darnova fell. The king's will carried through."
His eyes flickeredânot at me, but at the mark of my new rank. "I see they reward recklessness now."
Mother snapped, "He came home alive! He came home a man!"
But he cut her off with a sharp wave of his hand. His gaze never left me. "Don't mistake luck for greatness, Daniel. If Soren hadn't buried you under his protection, you'd be a name on a gravestone."
The words pierced deeper than any blade.
I stood firm, even though my chest tightened. "Then let me prove it, Father. Next time⊠without protection. Without interference."
For the first time, his eyes softened. Just a flicker. He didn't smile. He didn't step closer. But he didn't speak again either.
The silence between us was heavier than the war drums I'd left behind.
I knew thenâone battle had ended, but another had just begun.
