The journey back to the rogue camp was quiet.

Too quiet.

Even though we were surrounded by wolves and rogues—people who'd fought together and bled together—the silence clung to us like ash. No one knew what to say. What words could possibly cover what Kael had done?

He lay in the wagon behind, wrapped in soft cloth, the coffin carved by hand. The air was heavy with incense, and yet I could still smell the earth, the blood, and the heartbreak. My boots dragged slightly as we walked. Every step felt like we were pulling the weight of a world that had changed too fast.

The rogue camp came into view through the trees. Corin let us there. It was closer to the fortress than I thought. It was also smaller than I remembered. Or maybe grief had a way of shrinking everything.
