Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 - The Tide That Answers

The ocean trembled.

What had begun as a desperate defense had become a furious counter-offensive, powered not by strategy nor numbers—but by something far older.

Kaius roared forward with the ancient beasts.

The Mosasaurus, its scales shimmering with eerie bioluminescent algae, snapped another Deep Dweller in half as it swam alongside him. The colossal Megalodon raged through the battlefield like a living torpedo, its maw crushing armored leviathans that had once terrified Atlanteans.

And behind them came the host, coiling sea serpents wrapped in volcanic-rock armor,

giant turtles, prehistoric sharks with scarred hides, and even massive armored crustaceans lumbering forward like underwater cavalry. Atlantis had called.

The Deep had answered.

Kaius felt a thrum inside his skull, a resonance that vibrated down his spine and into his trident. His earlier roar echoed still inside the minds of these creatures, a signal, a summons, but something deeper than command.

Connection. Recognition. Kinship. As if some ancient royal instinct within him had awakened. One of the Mosasaurs, larger than the others, glided beside him. Its amber eye turned to meet his. And though it spoke no words, he felt the meaning:

We fight with you.

Kaius nodded once, solemnly, as a prince acknowledging ancient subjects he never knew existed. The Deep Dwellers shrieked as the beasts slammed into their ranks. A crab-like monstrosity rose from the sand, towering over Kaius with jagged claws and a shell plated like volcanic stone. It roared, releasing clouds of toxic ink.

Kaius kicked off the Mosasaur's dorsal fin—

fwssh!

He rocketed forward, slicing through water with a shockwave, propelling himself like a spear launched by a god. His trident spun once in his grip, then—

CRACK!

The blade was buried deep into the creature's armored hide. The Deep Dweller screeched, limbs flailing, but Kaius twisted the trident, channeling a burst of compressed water that exploded outward, shattering the shell from inside.

The monster collapsed in a heap.

He tore the weapon free, blood trailing in swirling ribbons behind him.

"Next!"

Atlanteans who fought with broken shields and shattered morale suddenly straightened. Their prince, bloodied, battered, but unstoppable, charged at the front, flanked by ancient titans.

And then—

The reinforcements arrived.

A second Atlantean battalion surged over the ridge of coral pillars, led by elite vanguards wielding lightning-charged spears and obsidian armor. They halted mid-formation, stunned by the sight:

A Megalodon ripping through Deep Dweller elites. A swarm of sea serpents coiled around hulks twice their size. A Mosasaurus shielding Atlantean infantry with its massive body.

One soldier whispered:

"By the Horizon Depths… the legends. They're real."

Another:

"They fight with the prince."

The realization spread like wildfire. Awe turned into fervor.

The reinforcements charged, joining the ancient beasts and their prince.

The Deep Dweller numbers, once overwhelming, began to thin—fast. Their formation was shattered. Their courage broke. Some fled into trenches; others burrowed into the sand. But there was nowhere left to hide. Not from the Atlanteans. Not from the monsters of the deep. And certainly not from Kaius.

He cut down another beast with a brutal two-strike combination, then hovered, chest heaving, blood floating from his wounds like a crimson fog. He could feel the tide turning. He could see it.

Deep Dweller bodies lay scattered across the battlefield like broken statues. The ancient creatures circled, snarling and shaking blood from their jaws.

Kaius's glowing eyes narrowed.

"Almost done…"

He turned his gaze toward the final clusters of Deep Dwellers, far fewer now, confused, desperate, trying to regroup.

No mercy.

He lowered his stance, fins flaring, wings slicing through the currents. Then he launched himself forward, a streak of violence and righteous fury.

------

By the time the last Deep Dweller corpse drifted to the ocean floor, the news was already racing across Atlantis like a tidal surge.

The battle was won. Atlantis endured. And the prince had summoned monsters out of legend.

Messengers swam through the great currents. Whisper-shells buzzed with excited tones. Even the remote kelp-farms heard fragments of the story, how Kaius Tidebreaker, bleeding and bruised, led ancient titans into battle.

By sunrise in the Coral Spire District, children reenacted his roar. By noon in the Royal Quarter, nobles whispered in private halls. By sundown in the lower reefs, chants of "Tidebreaker! Tidebreaker!" echoed between homes made of shell and glass.

------

The gates of the capital opened as the surviving soldiers returned, limping, bloodied, armor cracked, but alive. The great jellyfish lanterns dimmed respectfully as the army passed beneath.

Kaius swam in front, slowly, heavily. His body ached. His cuts burned. His armor still held the blood of monsters. Behind him, the Mosasaurus and Megalodon circled once, low and reverent, watching him from the distant dark…

…and then vanished into the deep.

The ancient beasts had answered his call.

But now they returned to their ancient domain.

The people watched, breathless.

"He summoned them…"

"The Prince commands the Old Deep!"

"No one alive has seen such power!"

Kaius ignored the murmurs. His only focus was the palace.

------

Kaius entered the throne chamber and immediately dropped to one knee, head lowered, trident planted before him for support.

"My Queen… the perimeter is secure. The Deep Dweller force has been eliminated."

Queen Aquiria stood, eyes wide, her crown's bioluminescence dimming and flaring with her shifting emotions.

"Rise, Kaius. Tell me the truth of what occurred."

He rose slowly, his muscles trembling with exhaustion, and retold everything, the roar, the psychic pulse, the eyes opening in the deep, the arrival of the monsters, the resonance he felt, the turning of the tide.

Queen Aquiria listened in stunned silence.

When he finished, she exhaled, a slow, careful breath.

"The ability you displayed… I feared it was only a myth. A story buried in the bones of our bloodline."

Kaius frowned.

"What ability?"

Aquiria nodded once to the court attendants.

They left immediately, sealing the chamber.

------

She guided Kaius through coral-wrapped doors into the Royal Archives, a vast circular hall lit with shimmering jellyfish globes. Ancient scrolls rested in shells larger than whales. Stone slabs engraved with glyphs circled the room.

She pointed to a mural, a mosaic made of pearl, obsidian, and volcanic glass.

Kaius stared.

Figures, royalty from ages past, stood tall with glowing eyes, summoning sea leviathans from the abyss. At their sides:

a Megalodon of titanic proportions, giant serpents wrapped in armor, Mosasaurus with glowing fins, and other creatures he could not name

Aquiria spoke softly:

"This power is called The Sovereign Summon. The call of the Monarch of the Deep. Only the most potent heirs of the royal line possessed it."

She traced a clawed finger across the mural.

"It has not manifested in seven generations. Your father did not have it. The King does not possess it."

Kaius swallowed, voice low.

"…But I do."

Aquiria turned to him fully. Her violet eyes glowed.

"You do. And that… changes everything."

------

As they spoke, the city churned with whispers.

"The King has no children."

"Kaius is the nephew, half-breed he may be, he is still blood of the old line."

"The Deep answered only to him."

"Perhaps he is meant to be the next king…"

Nobles debated behind pearl doors. Commoners murmured in kelp markets. Warriors nodded with newfound respect. Some even bowed as Kaius passed… Others frowned, wary of what a hybrid king might mean. Pressure built like a storm on the horizon.

------

The Queen led him to a final mural, one depicting a past monarch crowned in black coral, surrounded by titans of the sea.

"Understand this, Kaius. Power like yours is revered… and feared."

She placed a hand on his shoulder, firm and maternal.

"Some will call for you to replace the King. Some will seek to use you. Others may seek to eliminate you."

Kaius stiffened.

"I don't want the throne."

Aquiria nodded.

"Wanting it is irrelevant. The blood decides the course. And today… the Deep chose you."
