Chapter 10 - The Annoying Human Being

Oath stayed behind and continued to train. Suddenly, within just a few months, the environment around Maxwell's house changed drastically. There were many new robots that Oath had created, and now he could control all of them automatically.

While Oath was studying to further develop his coding skills, something suddenly fell from the sky in the distance.

"What is that?" Oath asked.

Maxwell did not answer immediately.

"I'll try to go there and see."

"Alright."

Oath flew using a new device he had made—a pair of shoes that allowed him to move faster. The shoes made Oath semi-fly and hover, shooting across the vast desert below.

He arrived within five minutes, after traveling miles and miles away. He began to recognize the shape of the object that had fallen.

"An aircraft. No, a capsule."

"A capsule? Is it possible there's a human inside?"

Oath didn't know, but it was very likely that the capsule had fallen along with its crew. Without thinking twice, he approached the burning capsule.

"Does this mean someone managed to escape the massacre that day?" Oath whispered softly.

He reached the capsule area and found someone lying there unconscious. A man, perhaps around the same age as Jisu's father. However, Oath did not recognize his face. He was a stranger to him, and clearly not part of Oath's colony.

"What happened?" Oath asked bluntly.

"An attack… they… they attacked all of us…"

The man then passed out. He had second-degree burns. In addition, he suffered a head injury from impact, along with broken ribs and an arm. Despite his critical condition, he was still alive.

"We'll take him back to basecamp."

Oath took out another device from his inventory. A device emerged from a black hole. It was shaped like a mechanical cart that could also hover. He laid the man on top of it, then issued a command: follow me.

Darkness. Everything was dark. The massacre. That dream kept repeating over and over inside Oath's mind. Then Jisu's screaming voice echoed.

"Oath!"

He woke up from his sleep. Oath was drenched in sweat.

Then he realized that he was now in Maxwell's house, and that the incident had been a dream—though in truth, it had happened several months ago. Oath clutched his head, which was throbbing violently.

"Where am I? Why is this house so ugly?" asked the man Oath had saved earlier that day.

Oath turned to look at him.

"Hell's paradise," Oath replied indifferently.

"If this is heaven, I'd rather go to hell," the man shot back.

Oath observed the man. His face was filled with regret and depression. He looked like someone who had never rested—disheveled and utterly confused.

"Where are you from?" Oath started the conversation.

"I am the last human on the face of the Earth. If I'm human, then you must be either an advanced robot or a demon in disguise, right?"

Oath blinked.

"I should've just let you die," Oath said, throwing a metal can at him.

He didn't know the man's name yet, but the man had already started throwing out annoying remarks.

"Don't you want to know my name?"

"No need. I've decided to kill you after this," Oath said as he picked up some bread and began eating.

"Hahahahaha!" The man laughed until he choked and started coughing.

"My name is Grey, oh you a shapeshifting ferret," the man replied.

"I'm Oath. Fine—when can I kill you?"

"That's cruel. If you wanted me dead, why did you save me?"

"I've been asking this the whole time—where are you from? Explain who you are, or I'll really be forced to kill you."

"I'm not a bad person."

"If you think I only kill bad people, then you're mistaken."

Oath was already furious. But there was one sensation he hadn't felt in a long time. What was this feeling?

"Alright, alright," the man said as he sat down.

Grey stared out the window.

"I'll tell you my origin, but it's going to be very long."

"We have all night," Oath said, tossing another piece of bread to Grey.

"At first, I thought there were only men left in this world. But it turns out, I was wrong."
