The carriage rolled onward without pause, wheels turning ceaselessly as the morning breeze swayed through the trees. Inside, Rudy's eyes fluttered open to wind rushing through the window. His bleary gaze swept the empty sleeping compartment - once again, he'd had the luxury carriage all to himself.
The plush bedding had provided excellent rest despite the bumpy road. Not that sharing inn rooms with Allen had been uncomfortable - quite the opposite, in fact. But having to consciously avoid clinging to Allen in his sleep (lest Sylphiette notice) had been its own kind of torture.
Now? He could sprawl however he wanted. Perfect. Absolutely perfect.
Rudy stared blankly at the window, listening to birdsong, then sighed and slapped his cheeks. Right. According to Allen's instructions, today was another day of playing "savior."
He pulled open the curtain to reveal their carriage winding through a shaded mountain path - Allen's chosen shortcut to reach Waterfall City by nightfall. One of the four satellite cities surrounding the royal capital, Alus. Just past this, two days by land (or one by water) would see them to their destination.
"Morning, old man," Rudy called to the coachman. "How much longer—"
The driver just grinned and nodded toward the cliff's edge. Rudy turned—and froze.
Beyond the broken mountain path stretched a breathtaking vista: twin waterfalls cascaded between earthen spires, feeding a labyrinthine city below where stone bridges arched over canals teeming with boats. Waterfall City lived up to its name, its entire layout carved by the relentless flow.
"First time seeing a water city?" the coachman chuckled. "Nothing like this up in Fittoa."
Rudy nodded absently. As a reincarnated person, the view was hardly shocking - just another pretty picture from his past life. What truly amazed him was the scene in the lead carriage.
After 39 days of travel (30 spent camping with only 9 inn stays), Rudy had slept alone every single night. Meanwhile, Allen—
Rudy yanked open the front carriage's curtain to reveal the usual spectacle:
Allen sat frozen like a statue, Eris drooling on his knees, Sylphiette curled against his side, and Isolte leaning on his shoulder - a human pillow immobilized by his own harem. The desperate relief in Allen's eyes when the curtain opened was almost pathetic.
"City's in view!" Rudy announced loudly.
Like clockwork:
Sylphiette sprang up with perfect composure
Isolte jolted awake with practiced grace
Only Eris remained dead asleep, still clutching Allen's legs
"Dreams last night?" Allen asked casually while rubbing his stiff neck.
"None," Isolte answered smoothly.
"N-not at all!" Sylphiette stammered before fleeing. When Allen pointed out she'd lingered outside, Isolte too bolted with flustered excuses.
For thirty-nine days this farce had continued since the "dream incident." What began as Allen monitoring for divine interference had devolved into him being used as living bedding. Even Sylphiette, who in original timelines would've burned with quiet jealousy, now seemed to encourage Isolte's presence.
"Absolute madness," Allen groaned, eyeing Waterfall City's crowded docks where James' assassins would surely strike. He glanced down at Eris, still snoring against him.
"Eris," he whispered.
"Food's ready."
Like a crossbow bolt, the redhead launched upright, combat-ready. "Where's breakfast?!"
As the carriage descended toward certain danger, one thought plagued Allen: How had his mission to thwart a god's schemes devolved into managing this chaotic romance? The waterfalls' roar seemed to laugh at his predicament.
