Chapter 76: The Crossing
The trees whispered secrets to the wind, their tall spines swaying as Odi trudged through the damp underbrush. She was wrapped in a hooded cloak, her pack light, but her steps were heavy with purpose. The woods ahead darkened. The Elderlands were near.
"Odi!"
She froze.
The voice sliced through the rustling leaves like a blade. Her heartbeat stuttered. She turned slowly, fingers tightening around the strap of her pack.
Valerie burst from the trees first, her braid lashing behind her like a whip, eyes burning with urgency. Faint sparks danced along her fingertips, the remnants of magic she hadn't dared hurl. Behind her, Pete stumbled into the clearing, panting hard, one hand on his sword, the other waving as if trying to swat the air.
"Odi! Gods, stop!" he gasped, chest heaving.
"How did you find me?" Odi asked, voice edged with steel. Her eyes darted to the shadows behind them, as if expecting more to follow.
