Kael had barely stepped out of the arena when he felt the weight of numerous stares. The nobles clearly didn't appreciate a commoner upsetting the established order.
— "Impressive. But that was just the beginning," Lyra said, joining him.
Kael nodded. He had only won a single duel. To be admitted, he still had to pass the remaining two trials.
The next day, the second trial began: a team battle against a summoned creature. Kael and Lyra were paired with an intimidating-looking boy.
— "Tch. Let's hope you two aren't dead weight," he said, arms crossed.
It was Reynald Draknor, a combat mage known for his talent. His gaze radiated contempt.
The gong rang, and a massive stone golem appeared in the arena.
— "Let's go!" Kael shouted.
But instead of coordinating, Reynald charged ahead alone.
— "What an idiot…" Lyra muttered.
The golem swiped through the air, sending Reynald crashing into a wall. Kael clenched his jaw.
— "We cover him!"
Activating his blue energy, Kael struck the golem hard. Cracks spread across its body, but the creature was tough.
Lyra cast a blinding light spell, stunning the golem, while Kael powered up for a final blow.
— "Now!"
His fist slammed into the golem's core, shattering it instantly.
The arena fell silent.
— "Winners: Kael, Lyra, and Reynald!"
Reynald stood up, a glimmer of respect in his eyes.
— "Not bad… but I won't lose next time."
Kael knew then—he had just gained a rival.
To be continued…
