V3/Chapter 16: Oh no, it's a trap!
The test results aligned perfectly with Ai Yue's predictions.
First was the enhancement of psychic abilities. After activating the Super-Transformation Armament, the Honkai Beast genes had stimulated Su's mental powers to undergo a qualitative leap. While still slightly inferior to Aponia's raw output, their compatible skill sets meant Su now possessed the capability to confront her directly.
Moreover, he'd awakened the innate ability of Mahamayuri, the Honkai Beast whose genes he carried—a unique pheromone with both physical and psychic properties. This neurotoxin-like secretion could spread through direct contact or mental resonance. Combined with Su's own traits, it had evolved into something new.
Watching Honkai Beasts collapse one after another, Su turned to Ai Yue in disbelief: "It works on Honkai Beasts too?"
"So it appears."
Ai Yue arched an eyebrow. "Congratulations psychic-type MANTIS just became frontline-compatible."
"At least I'll be more useful now."
Su smiled wryly. "Though I wonder if it'll affect stronger specimens."
"Lethality's hard to gauge, but weakening enemies is viable."
Ai Yue adjusted his scanner. "Like Mobius, you should learn to modulate this ability through Super-Transformation mastery. No rush though."
The Super-Transformation Armament wasn't merely armor plating over human form. Internally, Su's physiology now bore little resemblance to baseline humans—a common trait among MANTIS in this state. This allowed extraordinary adaptations:
Mobius could analyze ingested enemy tissue to synthesize targeted toxins mid-combat (proving decisive against the Herrscher of Domination) she generated bio-electric fields through reconfigured nerve clusters
If these weren't unique cases, Su too might develop similar capabilities.
"It's... possible."
Su closed his eyes, sensing untapped potential humming through his transformed body. "But requires more practice."
"No urgency. You're not being deployed immediately."
Ai Yue handed him a monitoring device. "Report any changes, and come for weekly checkups."
"Understood. I'll assist with further testing."
Su nodded, then hesitated. "You mentioned greater responsibilities earlier?"
"Still conceptual."
Ai Yue gazed upward with a playful smirk. "But since you asked... Su, how do you feel about lunar development?"
Su followed his gaze to the crescent moon hanging in the night sky.
"...The moon?"
——
Two weeks later
The first MANTIS squad received invitations from Starlight Research Base—oddly signed by Elysia rather than Ai Yue.
(TL: As you can see I change the Fusion Warrior to MANTIS)
"Why are those two collaborating again?"
Kevin eyed the envelope warily. "Nothing good ever happens when they team up."
"Really?"
Dr. MEI twirled her matching invitation, lips quirking. "Not attending then?"
"Not going would be worse."
Kevin pocketed his with a sigh. "You're coming?"
"It's rare to... never mind."
Dr. MEI stretched. "Let's see what Elysia and Ai Yue have concocted."
So the two of them walked towards the facility where the portal was located, and on the way, they unexpectedly met a person.
"Mobius?"
Dr. MEI blinked. "Rare to see you outside the lab."
"Mei. Kevin."
The green-haired scientist acknowledged them curtly. "I just went out for something. Where are you going"
"Ai Yue's base."
Kevin frowned. "You didn't get an invite? That's unlike him."
"Irrelevant. I declined."
Mobius averted her gaze momentarily before giving Kevin an odd look. "But you... well, you need to work harder."
She patted his shoulder (standing on tiptoes to do so) and strode off.
"Since when does Mobius avoid Ai Yue's projects?"
Kevin muttered as Dr. MEI tugged him toward the portal.
"She has her reasons."
Dr. MEI smiled cryptically. "Elysia's waiting."
Thus Kevin missed his final warning, stepping through the portal to Australia's Starlight Base—where Elysia greeted them with a cheerleader's pompoms beneath a glaring banner:
"STAGE PROJECT INTERNAL SCREENING"
Kevin realized something at this moment and his face suddenly changed. He turned around and wanted to go back through the portal directly.
However, when he turned around, he found that the light inside the portal had dimmed. On the other side of the portal, Vill-V, who had appeared out of nowhere, was holding a handful of connecting wires and smiling at him.
