The hallways were dark, lined with strange engravings that seemed to writhe in the dim light.

Students passed by her, their glares sharp and lingering. Rexan knew it was because of her scent.

She had masked her true smell to avoid detection. Instead of the cold, earthy stench of the dead, she reeked of sickly sweet roses, a fragrance so overpowering that it made people dizzy if they focused too long. It was all part of her plan, a way to throw them off.

She stopped outside the principal's office and pushed the heavy door open. The woman behind the desk didn't even glance up, her focus locked on a stack of files. "Make sure it's your size," she drawled, sliding a neatly folded dorm uniform toward Rexan without breaking stride.

"Of course," Rexan replied, grabbing the smallest size she could find and heading for the door.

"You smell sickeningly sweet," the woman said suddenly.

Rexan froze mid-step, her heart pounding.
