Chapter 131 - Chapter 131: First Meeting

"Snivy."

A sweet and soft voice rang out.

Silas looked at the adorable little creature before him, and for a moment, his heart completely melted.

Torchic? What's that? Could it possibly be cuter than Snivy?

The Pokémon in front of him was the grass snake Pokémon, Snivy. Most of its body was green, but a large portion of it was cream-colored.

A yellow stripe ran from its back to the tip of its tail, and at the end of the tail was a large leaf with three splits.

The yellow parts around its neck looked like tiny wings, and from behind, it resembled a lily flower.

Although it had the appearance of a snake, it still had limbs, and its green arms bore three small fingers each.

Snivy blinked its big eyes as it looked at the trainer in front of it.

Back at the breeding center, it had already been told that it would be assigned to an excellent trainer.

"Snivy?"

Is that you? The big leaf at the end of Snivy's tail swayed slightly.

Silas crouched down and held out a finger. "Yes, I'll be your trainer from now on. Let's get along well."

Snivy tilted its head. This guy doesn't seem too bad?

It hesitated for a moment before stretching out its tiny hand and tapping his finger. The cool touch made Silas's mind feel instantly refreshed.

"Oh! Looks like you two are getting along just fine," Professor Rowan said with a smile from the side.

He wasn't particularly surprised by the scene.

After all, Snivy was a very calm and intelligent Pokémon. When it came to getting along with trainers, it often refused to obey those who were still immature.

But Silas wasn't like your average rookie trainer. Naturally, he was able to earn Snivy's approval.

That was exactly what Professor Rowan had in mind when he chose Snivy. He believed the Unova region's Snivy was a better match for Silas compared to Johto's Chikorita, which is why he contacted Professor Juniper in Unova to request one.

Anyway, Professor Juniper and Professor Oak were longtime acquaintances and often exchanged starter Pokémon with each other.

As for Professor Elm in Johto, truthfully, because he was one of Professor Oak's best students and due to the closer proximity between their regions, they did have a better relationship.

But the moment Professor Elm saw the state Professor Oak was in, Professor Rowan could only hold his forehead in exasperation and let it go.

The long-winded and excessive explanations made even Professor Rowan lose patience.

And judging by the current situation, it seemed he had made the right call. Chikorita's personality might have been too gentle for Silas.

Besides, the handsome trainer paired with a beautiful Pokémon was definitely eye-catching. Professor Rowan nodded in satisfaction.

"This little one is a girl, by the way. Make sure you take good care of her."

Silas nodded.

Come to think of it, this might be his first female Pokémon.

With Pidgeot and Boldore, there were no visible differences between genders, and their species generally had a 50/50 male-to-female ratio. It just so happened that both of his were male.

As for Blaziken, female Torchic only made up about one-eighth of the population. Female Blaziken also had smaller feathers on their heads. Just judging by the thick crest on his Torchic's head, it was obvious it was male.

"Alright, go spend some time getting to know each other," Professor Rowan said as he shooed the two out of his research lab, seeing how the trainer and Pokémon were staring into each other's eyes.

Before they left, he didn't forget to register Silas's trainer ID so he could swipe his card to re-enter the lab later.

"Whew."

Even though it was an enclosed hallway, Silas felt as though a breeze had passed by.

"How about we stroll through the backyard and enjoy some sunshine?" Silas suggested to Snivy.

Sunshine? Snivy's tail perked up slightly before it caught itself and tried to tone down the excitement but still nodded eagerly.

Silas chuckled. Snivy used its tail to bask in sunlight and perform photosynthesis.

Under the sun, it would become more energetic. By absorbing solar energy, it would grow stronger and move with greater speed.

Naturally, it yearned for sunlight.

In fact, many Grass-type Pokémon were like that. That's one reason they were relatively cheap and easy to raise.

Even without intensive training, they could gradually realize their potential just by soaking up sunlight.

However, without any intervention, the process was painfully slow and they had very little combat ability early on.

But Snivy, as one of the officially designated starter Pokémon in Unova, didn't have that problem.

Its agile body and innate sensitivity and control over Grass-type energy made Snivy extremely skilled in using Vine Whip so much so that it was more flexible than fighting with its body.

It could even learn Leaf Tornado early on a move that only a few Pokémon could master. With a base power of 65, it significantly compensated for Snivy's lack of early attack power.

Snivy's training method would be very different from Silas's previous Pokémon. Otherwise, he wouldn't have to think so much about combat strategy.

For Pidgeot, Blaziken, and the future Gigalith, each of their evolutionary stages mainly represented stronger bodies, more powerful energy, and a broader skill pool. Their combat styles remained fairly consistent.

But Snivy's second evolution, Servine, though still a grass snake Pokémon, retained its arms.

Once it evolved into its final form, Serperior, its hind limbs would completely disappear and its forelimbs would shrink into leafy extensions. This wouldn't just change its battle style it would alter how it moved entirely.

As its trainer, Silas had to be conscious of training Snivy and Servine to dodge attacks using vines or by slithering with their bodies.

He even needed to refine its use of Vine Whip to perfection to ensure that, once Snivy evolved into Serperior, it wouldn't temporarily lose combat capability due to its drastic physical changes.

Deep in thought, Silas walked with the bouncing Snivy until they unknowingly arrived at the backyard of Professor Oak's Laboratory.

Calling it a "backyard" didn't do it justice it was actually an open-air research area that was astonishingly vast.

The area was divided into seven or eight zones based on the attributes and habits of different Pokémon.

There were rocky terrains specifically for Rock-types, desert areas designed for Ground- and Fire-type Pokémon, grassy fields, and even several enormous ponds.

These weren't just natural ponds they were fully artificial and massive, almost as large as inland lakes. Without a doubt, they were incredibly costly to build.

Taking in the expansive landscape, Silas couldn't help but feel his mood lift.

"Hey little one, how about I carry you on my shoulder?"

Silas suddenly had an idea and suggested it to the nearby Snivy, who was currently basking in the sun.

Truth be told, he had wanted to do this for a while. But Snivy's predecessor, Torchic, had been way too hyper when it was younger, completely killing the mood.

Pidgeot, back when it was just a Pidgey, had tried it a couple of times, but bird claws weren't exactly comfortable.

As for Boldore, back when it was just a Roggenrola it was simply too heavy. Silas had tried a few times and ended up with sore shoulders for days.

But Snivy? Snivy was perfect for it.

Though this particular Snivy was well-developed, its height was only 0.65 meters and its weight was 8.5 kilograms still compact and delicate. (The average Snivy stands at 0.6 meters and weighs 8.1 kilograms.)

Snivy opened her eyes and hesitated for a moment.

She locked eyes with Silas.

"Snivy!" he called.

Snivy's eyes curved into crescent moons, clearly finding the idea amusing.

"So… may I?" Silas asked again, seeking confirmation.

Snivy gave a firm nod.

Silas gently picked her up and placed her on his shoulder.

Snivy extended a vine from her tiny hand and naturally used it to secure herself onto Silas's body.

"Snivy,"

It felt like the sunlight reached her even better from here. Snivy let out a relaxed sigh.

Silas sat down on a nearby bench meant for researchers to take breaks. It was at a great angle, the sun was strong, and he used his finger to playfully poke at Snivy.

"Snivy, Snivy~"

Snivy's small hand and vine danced around Silas's fingertips.

A flash of joy passed through Silas's eyes.

Although all starter Pokémon issued by the League were carefully selected, each individual still had its own differences.

Judging from her current behavior, this Snivy not only had excellent base stats on the League's official evaluation system but also showed remarkable control over both her body and moves.

Everything else could be tested later. For now, it was best to enjoy the warm afternoon sunshine.

Silas and Snivy both narrowed their eyes in sync, feeling utterly at peace.

Oh, right Silas suddenly opened his eyes he should introduce Snivy to her seniors.

Just as he reached toward his waist to release his other three Pokémon, a sudden yell interrupted him.

"Grandpa! Grandpa! Ash stole my stuff again!"

"You're lying! That Poké Ball was something we both reeled in together!"

"I was the one who caught it!"

"No, I did!"

Two kids, no older than seven or eight, came tumbling into the backyard, still wrestling with each other.

Each of them held a fishing rod, and tangled between them was a single Poké Ball.

The researchers nearby didn't even glance in their direction they were clearly used to this kind of scene.

Silas paused, curious, and looked at the two of them. Wait a minute… Is that Gary and Ash?

It was hard to mistake. Ash's clothes looked like someone had bought them in a size ten times too big. The boy in front of Silas looked like a shrunken version of the iconic Trainer Ash. Combined with what the other kid had just yelled, it wasn't hard to guess who they were.

After all, in such a small place, running into other kids was already rare. Meeting these two specifically? That was no coincidence.

"Wow! Big bro, I've never seen you before. Is that your Pokémon? What is it? It's so cute!" Ash was the first to spot Silas and Snivy.

Silas could only sigh. Sharp eyes, as expected of you.

"Hmph! That's Snivy one of the Unova region's starter Pokémon. It's a Grass-type powerhouse! Super strong!" Gary huffed proudly beside him.

"Bleh~" Ash stuck out his tongue. "I wasn't asking you!"

Snivy had been startled by Ash charging over and immediately hid behind Silas.

But upon hearing Gary praise her, she puffed out her chest with pride, lowered herself to the ground using her vines, and lifted her tail high.

That's right it was her. She was awesome.

Silas watched this little scene with speechlessness. Somehow… this all felt very familiar.
