Chapter 12 - Ch . 6 Months Later

The last six months has seen Germany raise at a meteoric pace, quite literally becoming a true nation overnight. In fact Bruno has been working without a single day of rest since beginning, causing his ministers and Karl no small degree of worry. It got the the point where they literally had to force him to take a week long break in a small and personal palace he summoned in the country side, of which he is just now returning from. Upon his return, his first order of business was in arranging a day long meeting to discuss the nations progress, and future.

First is the borders of the continent-sized nation which have been thoroughly surveyed and populated with both civilian and military infrastructure. First are the hundreds of cities along the coast and are beginning to expand into the southern isles, bringing the nation's population to nearly 90 million. As one would expect such a rise in population has seen a spike in crime, particularly sex crimes, as there are no legal releases for those without partners of their own. To combat this, Bruno has established government-run brothels in specific districts of each city. This not only allows the government to ensure sex workers health and safety, but also provides a substantial revenue for taxes. Naturally there are restrictions on where such an establishment can be built, such as no where near a school or church, but also those who can visit, only those who are above the age of 17 with legal identification. While a little controversial among the populace, there is a recognized need for such facilities and the inevitably of illegal establishments. Therefore it was agreed that it was better to legalize the business for taxes and ensuring public health.

Second is the government, which made a transition to a semi-constitutional monarchy. The major difference is that of power, with the crown holding significantly more power than before. Bruno dubbed this a necessity after seeing the greed of politicians in both lives, especially those who betrayed the Reich during the war. This nearly caused a civil war, but was just barely avoided. The most significant change in this is the Kaiser's ability remove individuals from both the Bundesrat and Reichstag, even after their voting into office. This caused the most trouble, as many of those in office felt it was an attempt to undermine the Parliament's authority and ability to govern. Fortunately Bruno was able to smooth things over, adding a clause that the Kaiser must give a sound reason for removing an elected individual from office, and both houses have the ability to appeal a single time for reinstating said individual. Whether or not the reinstatement is approved, however, is still within the Kaisers purview.

Next is the nation's infrastructure and development. All major cities have been connected with railways, trains, and major highways. Said cities also have subways, airports, and ports when accessible, with above-ground tram services when not. Smaller cities and towns connected by freeway and lower trafficked railways to each other, and the closest major city. The capital, industrial cities, and agricultural areas are all developing according to schedule, allowing self-sufficiency and economic prosperity.

Second to last is the military and public security, which has advanced the most over the last few months. Of the 3 major and 52 minor harbors, 2 major and 30 minor have been developed as military installations. Those with enough space and suitable terrain have been developed with a transition to joint bases to be constructed over the next decade, with 10 minor and both major harbors being developed immediately. Furthermore, army bases and Air Force aerodromes were constructed near every major city and strategic location, providing law enforcement to each. The civilian harbors, however, all have branch offices and facilities for each branch to provide security and enforce border security. The most important aspect of the military is the new policy for service and conscription, making it mandatory for each man to serve 16 months when coming of age. Combined with the addition of military training and knowledge for boys from 10 years until graduation, the nation will always have a stable number of military trained men. The conscription, refers to the reinstatement of the national guard, a military force for each branch that trains every month. This continues until the men turn 35, where they then retire with half benefits and pensionof full-time service members, with veterans as full time members in each national guard branch.

Of the branches the navy and Air Force are receiving particular attention, the Air Force being expanded greatly due to the size of the nation and the navy being separated into 3 armadas (3 fleets in each). The Inland Fleets use quick and low-draft vessels to patrol and protect major rivers and waterways, with the largest being armed river barges. The Coastal Fleet utilizes small to large ships, ranging in size from frigates at the smallest to heavy cruisers at the largest. The fleets focus on ships that can rapidly deploy to locations while also maintaining protection and firepower, knowing each important port and location is protected with naval fortifications and bases. This being said each of the individual coastal fleets has at least 1 battleship and 2 battle cruisers, giving them the firepower to compete with hostile invasions. The final armada is the newly established expeditionary force armed with the 2 Bismarck-class super-dreadnaughts and over 100 support and escort ships, including cruisers destroyers and aircraft carriers. The SMS Bismarck and SMS Tirpitz, two of the most famous ships in German naval history. This makes it the single largest fleet in German history. Currently the German navy has more vessels than docking space utilizing a tactic that keeps several dozen ships out at sea at a time, rotating and patrolling the waters in between each port.

Finally, the most important update… what appears to be a land bridge. This was the most shocking revelation as the map, which had proven to be completely accurate until now, had no indication of being connected to any landmass. In fact, the prioritization of the navy and Air Force over the army was a direct result of this. The terrain is similar to that of Western Europe, with vast fields and countless hedgerows. Located just south of the northern tundra, it is covered in deep snow 6 months of the year, with the land being relatively dry and grassy the rest of the year. Now with the discovery of the land bridge, spanning 189 kilometers in width, there is great concern over the nations borders. This is primarily because there are very few bases in the area, with priority set on more to be immediately established.

It is with all of this in mind where Bruno decides on the nations next course of action, one that will forever change this worlds course of history.

"It's time we made contact with the outside world."
