Chapter 2 - Thinking About The Future

After quite some time, both Eddie and Olive arrived at the parking lot. They headed to their vehicle and entered it. With that, the car then drove, exiting Lockson Tech's skyscraper, thus entering the asphalt road, connecting to one after another.

The skyscraper was built with a sturdy metal alloy, making it able to withstand its towering height. Some part of the building was covered with tinted glass and white metal alloy spiraling around it to work as the exterior of the building.

The skyscraper doesn't have a unique modern or futuristic design compared to the other skyscrapers. Still, it was approximately more than six hundred meters — making it the tallest tower among the others — with fogs of cloud shrouding its highest point. There was also a logo high on the building with the capital letter 'T' inside the letter 'L', which stands for Lockson's Tech.

A vehicle that had just exited the skyscraper a while ago, drove through the busy city. Inside it were Olive and Victor.

The previous sat near the window, looking at the city with a blank expression while the latter drove the vehicle.

The city outside was thriving with tons of activity here and there. The city was built like layers, with buildings getting smaller and shorter the further away they are from the center.

This was a Twilight city.

At the center of it, was Lockson's tower and a couple of skyscrapers made out of tough alloy, each one with a unique design.

At the second layer of the city, stood smaller buildings made out of concrete instead of alloy. The height was relatively shorter than the skyscraper standing proudly at the center of the city, but they were nevertheless tall.

The outskirts of the city, however, does not consist of any tall or towering buildings. Instead, what stood at the outskirts were blocks of houses, most with a grandiose and modern design, while some were slightly traditional.

There were also parks near the blocks of houses with people doing their everyday life, like jogging, taking their dog on a walk, birdwatching, etc. Other than that, the blocks also include stores nearby.

Sometimes, the vehicle drove right past a beautiful terrace street and a store near the outskirts.

The city was also located on the Western coast of America, in a nation called the Loria Republic. And due to it being located near the shore, and also a place where the sun sets, people would go to the beach on occasion when the sun was setting, to relax, and watch the serene view beyond the horizon.

...That was why the city was called Twilight.

All and all, the city was rather beautiful.

Olive was still looking outside the car window with a blank expression. Eddie, noticing it asked with curiosity and a hint of worried tone, "Hey, you okay? What're you thinking about?"

Olive stared outside for a few seconds. Eventually, he answered with a somber tone, "Nothing, I'm just thinking about what I'll do in the future."

Eddie seems to be taken aback by Olive's answer, because when asked about his future career or plan, his brother would usually answer it half-heartedly.

It's like he doesn't care about what job he'll have in the future. Perhaps he thought that he would do fine since his father has the riches and wealth, and he might inherit it.

His father owned a multinational technology company revolving around various things related to technologies such as robotics, electronics, software, etc. The company was originally founded and established by his grandfather around the mid-21st Century. A very long time, almost fifty years ago.

Back then, technologies were at their worst state following the war between nations. The connection network worsened, most people were unable to charge their devices thanks to the constant power outage, and even the satellites were affected, rendering GPS and smart vehicles useless. People back then were desperate.

So, after the war ended, the supply and demand for better technologies grew unreasonably high, which his grandfather then took the opportunity to develop his company and at the same time, rebuild the country with the help of the Loria Republic's first president, Lorel Alvada.

After that, was history. The company grew successful, with its market share ranging between 15% to 17% globally, and 45% to 52% domestically. As a matter of fact, most of the smart devices being used these days came from the innovation of Lockson's Tech. The company mostly focused on robotics, hoping it could develop the Loria Republic's growth in terms of economy.

In summary, Lockson's Tech was one of the successful technology companies that most of the world would know about, ranking in third place among global firms.

Naturally, with a wealth like that, no one would ever need to worry about money. So does he think he will be fine when he inherits that much wealth? No, Olly was a lot of things, but greed was not one of them. Eddie hummed. So this shorty finally started thinking about his future huh? Curious.

The thought of it made Eddie smile, making Olive look at him strangely.

"Well, whatever it is, I'm sure you'll do just fine."

Olive... stared at Eddie with an intense emotion. He seems really touched by Eddie's words.

No more than a second later he asked, "You think so?"

Eddie chuckled inwardly, not showing any humorous expression or gesture except a warm smile on his face. "Uh-huh, you're smart, right? So I'm sure if there's a problem, you'll be able to solve it."

Hearing that, Olive's heart warmed a little. Sure, Eddie might be a pain in the ass most of the time, but other times he was also a person Olive could lean on.

"But too bad you're not smart enough to heighten up your short height, because that is the only problem you can't solve." Eddie teased, then proceeded to laugh. This time he finally decided to express his humor.

Maybe I spoke too soon. Olive thought, "For the millionth time, I'm not short. I'm just... a late bloomer."

"Uh-huh."

"Ah, damn it! Forget about it!" Olive yelped feeling a bit embarrassed.

Not too long after their short conversation, the vehicles stopped near the sidewalks in front of a high school located at 27 East Bark Street.

The high school was built out of bricks, with two large doors as the entrance. The school was rather large — especially for a public school — with more than one floor. Each of the floors contains dozens of classes with different subjects, such as chemistry, physics, science tech, advanced math, etc.

In front of the school, there was a considerably large park that served as a decoration and a place where students could relax. There and there, trees were planted, making the park more lush. In the middle of the park, a fountain stood alone, pouring water from the top and flowing down. Students could be seen hanging out before the bell started. They would hang out below the trees, on a bench or near the fountain...

At the front of the school, a stone sign was placed. On it, the name of the school.

Abraham Westland High

The school gave the students a sense of calmness with the aesthetic lushness of the park.

But Olive couldn't care less. He didn't waste any time and just gave Eddie a goodbye before exiting the vehicle, heading toward the entrance of the school.

Eddie looked at Olive's back as he entered the school building. After a while, he sighed.

"What am I going to do with him?"

Thinking about his brother's future was a little worrying than he had initially thought... What would happen when he inherits their father's wealth? What would happen to Lockson's Tech? How would Olly hold it up?

All sorts of questions were intertwined in Eddie's mind.

Eventually, he let out another sigh and drove off.
