Chapter 21 - Storytime

"That's crazy" Miriam chuckled, I'd told her about some of the strange things Opal and Penelope had told me about their childhood which I agreed, could be a little crazy. "Not as crazy as some of the things we used to get up to" I teased "Okay, we got into some weird stuff, but not like that" Miriam rolled her eyes. "I mean we climb trees all the time, and I always joke about having shrines to lovecraftian beings in the woods near my house, or…okay I can't think of anything else right now but I know there's other things" I offered. Miriam bit her lip, something she often did when she was thinking "There are all the times we snuck out through the hole in the fence" She smirked. I smiled softly "Oh Gods yeah," I glanced up at the camera "Maybe we should tell them" I joked though it wasn't much of a joke. In theory, death maze theory! Yes I watched film theory and game theory most of my life before I was sent into the mase, don't judge me or you're a troglodyte. But in theory this whole thing is televised right, so if we make it entertaining to watch, maybe we won't just get sacrificed and die a very gorey death. I think Miriam approves of that idea based on the look she gave me. "Sure why not, you wanna go ahead?" She asked, her hand tracing hearts on the rim of the fountain bed. I stood up, getting in front of one of the cameras in the intercross. "Okay, let's get this done. So sit the Hades down, get like some popcorn or something if you don't already have some because I'm about to tell y'all a story," I gave my best performance smile. I heard Miriam laugh quietly behind me. "So I'm a bit of a trouble student, or rather a trouble student who never gets caught," I corrected, pointing at nothing in particular. I knew there were eyes on me and usually I wasn't like this in front of people, but this is life and death. "So one day when a friend of mine, who is not here whom I will not be snitching on because snitches get stitches," I nodded "Anyways she found a hole in the fence at our school. How? I do now know," I mentioned. I heard Miriam start to burst out laughing behind me before supposedly covering her mouth. "Anyways, she found a hole in the fence at the back of our schoolyard. Now we may be trouble students but not like a running away type trouble, more like climbing things we aren't supposed to like feral children" I explained. Miriam couldn't hold back her laughter "Feral children" She wheezed "Yes Mir I just called the three of us feral children, I know, I'm awesome," Okay Goddess above I was really playing it up for the camera, I hoped I wasn't coming off too strong and more as a funny kid, I was pretty glad Miriam was laughing. Even if she didn't really find it funny it might help a little to make what I was saying sound a little less insane. Though who are we kidding, I am insane. "So our thought was to climb through the hole, and go over and just pick the flowers. In our defense, they were really pretty," I shrugged "So every day at DPA-" Miriam cut me off. "Shouldn't you explain why we always went through the hole at DPA?" She asked, I looked over at her before turning back to the camera. "Right! I should've done that," I laughed at my own idiocy "We always went through the hole at DPA because at lunch there were too many teachers, probably so this didn't happen" I started. "But at DPA it was usually just our teacher and a few others for the first ten minutes and they always stayed far away from the back of the field" Miriam finished, stumbling her way over to stand next to me. She leaned on me so that she wouldn't fall over and hit her head. "At least for the first like ten minutes, the last twenty was just her and our class" I admitted "Oh Gods yeah, she always took us out for the longest DPA's and then always complained we were behind in class" Miriam chuckled. "Miss C if you're hearing this, uh sorry? You're the best, don't stop giving the class snacks. Anyways, one time I was out there and we ran into an entire daycare of children and the daycare attendant walking on the path just outside the fence," I rubbed something out of my eye before continuing. "I thought for sure she would turn us in or something but she just kind of said alright and kept going, didn't even ask any questions. It was so awkward" I admitted, I was trying to hold back my laughter, that had been quite the funny moment. "And don't forget the time we were looking out at the lake and I started to run back and you two flipped out and started running as well" Miriam chuckled. I smiled softly "Those were the days, before y'know, we all got sent in here to die a bloody gruesome death," I shrugged. Miriam looked at me, I'd kind of messed with the happy sort of mood we had going on. "Sorry" I mumbled quietly "It's okay Addi-" Miriam started to speak but her knees buckled. She collapsed, her body slamming into mine, my arms shot out to catch her. Her skin was hot, absolutely burning up "Miriam!" I cried out, her eyes started to close. "Holy moly" I heard her mumble weakly as her eyes closed fully. "Mir! Don't you dare close your eyes on me!" I screamed at her, I wasn't going to let this happen, if she died…I knew I wouldn't make it.
