"What the hell is she doing?" Sarah mumbled to herself as she watched Rachel look around. Her eyes widened as she watched Rachel's eyes glow a mulberry shade. Her mind raced back to when she saw that same glow while Rachel was asleep in her home.
"I knew it, she is a fucking witch!" She said out loud, then quickly covered her mouth when Rachel's head turned in her direction.
"Who's there!?" Rachel yelled as she started to walk towards the entrance of the warehouse where Sarah was hiding.
Sarah's heart started to thump rapidly as she scurried around the corner and into the treeline outside. She covered her mouth and crouched, then peeked her head out just enough to see Rachel.
The glass cracked underneath Rachel's feet as she glanced around. Her eyes were fixated on the rubble and debris scattered around the giant hole in the wall. Sarah pulled her head back behind the tree when she saw Rachel's head turn towards the treeline. Her forehead dripped with perspiration as she balled her hands into a fist as she glanced up at the evening sky.
Sarah's arm hair stood on end while the air around her seemed to hum with electricity. The trees and foliage swayed violently as if they were screaming. She blinked rapidly as she tried to control her breathing, as she watched rocks and branches shake on the ground like an earthquake. The sensation of being watched swelled up inside her, like something invisible had eyes on her. She stayed still, focusing on Rachel's footsteps that were no longer audible.
The earth around her suddenly went still, followed by an eerie quietness as the trees stopped swaying and the wind stopped blowing. Sarah sighed, then slowly peeked her head out from behind the tree. Her eyes narrowed when there was no sign of Rachel.
Sarah rubbed her hands through her hair, then took a deep breath. She glanced down the road and then back towards the warehouse as she left the treeline. Her eyebrows widened as she stared at the hole in the warehouse. A chill crept up her spine as she rubbed her shoulders as she slowly approached the warehouse once more.
Sarah's bright pink and yellow windbreaker rustled in the wind as she peeked her head into the warehouse, scanning for any sign of Rachel. Her eyes were fixated on the bullets, bricks, steel pipes, and suitcases scattered across the concrete floor.
"Did Rachel do all this?" She muttered softly out loud as she glanced around, then up at the broken fluorescent lights overhead. Her body shivered, feeling something unnatural occurred here, as if the presence was still in the warehouse, just invisible.
"What are all these suitcases?"
Sarah glanced back towards the entrance of the warehouse, then crouched down near a suitcase that was surrounded by glass and bullets. She grabbed a steel pipe nearby and then poked at it with a raised eyebrow.
"Seems safe enough," she said as she dropped the steel pipe and then picked up the suitcase.
"Locked figured," she groaned as she shook it and tried to open it before throwing it to the ground.
The suitcase cracked open, revealing a single Zippo lighter. The air around it was distorted, glitching with static energy. Sarah yelped with wide eyes as she stumbled backward, staring at the glitching energy surrounding the lighter.
"What the fuck is that?" Sarah asked out loud with a raised eyebrow. "Okay, that's it, I am out of here," she muttered to herself as she started to walk towards the entrance.
Sarah stumbled over the steel pipe she dropped. "Fuck," she growled as she attempted to catch her balance, kicking the suitcase and jolting out the lighter.
The lighter bounced off her jeans and then hummed violently. Sarah gasped with wide eyes as she recoiled and fell to the ground. Her body started to convulse as her eyes rolled to the back of her head. Her hair sparked up as if a balloon charged with static electricity touched her head.
Sarah felt a tingling sensation creep up her spine, followed by an intense heat in her mouth, as if she had eaten a dozen habaneros. The heat dripped down her spine and into her arms and legs as she started to scream. Her veins felt like molten lava, then her eyes began to spark. Flames engulfed her body as she twitched and convulsed on the floor while she screamed in agony. She pulled at her hair as she curled up into a ball, her eyes dripped liquid flames. The steel pipes, bullets, and bricks around her started to melt as she whimpered.
The inferno slowly died down, clawing its way into her body like a parasite. Her mind burned with clarity as her heart rate slowed down. Her arms trembled as she gazed around the warehouse with wild eyes. Her clothes were not burned, nor were there any burns on her skin.
She took deep breaths as she slowly stood up and gazed down at herself. "What the hell happened to me?" She muttered as she glanced down at her hands.
Her head jolted towards the entrance as she heard the sound of a vehicle approaching. Sarah's eyes darted around the warehouse as a black SUV pulled up.
"Oh no," she muttered to herself as she scrambled behind a wall. Sarah watched as Diego exited the vehicle, his eyes gazing around at the carnage and the hole in the wall before entering the warehouse.
"Oh fuck," Sarah said as she crouched down with her back on the wall.
Sarah peeked her head around the wall, watching as Diego picked up a bullet from the ground. His eyes gravitated towards the scorched concrete where Sarah once was. His nostrils flared as he glanced over towards the scattered suitcases and the steel pipes lodged into the wall.
A spark of flames flickered in Sarah's eyes as her heart started to race. She bit her lip as she tried to control her breathing. Her eyes glanced over towards the entrance while Diego's back was turned. A steel pipe nearby clanked Sarah's shoe, and she kicked it as she stood up.
"Who is there!?" Diego yelled as she turned around with his hand on his gun holster.
"Don't shoot!" Sarah replied as she raised her hands, her arms trembling as she revealed herself. "I didn't do any of this."
Diego's eyes narrowed, hands still on his weapon. "You P.I.A.?" He barked.
Sarah shook her head. "I am just a high school student...mister."
"Don't lie to me!"Diego shouted as he pointed his gun at Sarah.
Sarah recoiled as she closed her eyes. "I'm not lying...I sware. I just followed my friend."
"Where is this friend?"
"I don't know."
"I said, don't lie to me!"
"I really don't know. She just vanished...I swear."
"Where is my sister?"
Sarah shook her head. "You mean...Dezerea?"
Diego nodded. "Yes, where is she?"
Sarah shook her head.
Diego rolled his eyes. "Your full of shit," he replied as he started to pull the trigger.
Sarah recoiled and stretched out her hands. Her eyes burned like a raging inferno as flames erupted from her hands. She closed her eyes, half expecting to be dead, but all she heard was Diego's screams as fire engulfed his body. Diego flailed in the warehouse before collapsing onto the ground motionless.
The smell of burnt flesh filled the air as Sarah slowly opened her eyes. She blinked rapidly as she looked down at Diego's scorched body. Sarah breathed out of her mouth as her hands trembled and flames flickered around her. She swallowed hard as she stared wide-eyed around the warehouse, then at herself. The rocks and concrete were singed underneath her shoes as she cautiously approached Diego's lifeless body.
"Oh fuck....oh fuck," Sarah blabbered as she covered her nose, gagging from the smell.
"Okay, ummm, let's not panic, Sarah....it was self-defense."
Sarah started to pace as she coughed, then walked away from Diego's body and outside the warehouse. She breathed rapidly, then her eyes lit up like a Christmas tree. Her eyes narrowed as she glanced back into the warehouse, then out into the treeline.
"Wait...I got powers?" Sarah muttered to herself as she stretched out her hands. She closed her eyes and concentrated, then manifested a small ball of flames in her hand.
"How...the...holy hell. I am a superhero!"She declared with a smile stretched across her face.
"I am like that fire chick on the TV shows," she laughed as she played with the ball of fire in her hand.
Her eyes narrowed once more as she rubbed her chin. "Then that means Rachel isn't a witch; she likes me!?"
Sarah bit her fingernail, then blinked. "Okay, so what do I call myself?" She pondered as she rubbed her chin. She then shook her head. "Ah fuck it. I will figure that out later. I need to talk with Rache. Maybe she is in some secret superhero guild."
Sarah glanced back at the warehouse with a smile. She took a deep breath and then wiped the dust off her jacket and jeans.
"So long, mundane, normal life. It's time to save the world!" She yelled with a smile on her face as she struck a pose. Flames flickered off her body as she walked down the road, leaving Diego's burnt body in the warehouse.
