Benjamin's large, dark eyes darted around. He reached into his sunflower backpack and took out the lollipop he had secretly stashed there the day before, handing one to Nicholas. In a soft, sticky voice, he said, "I'll share my lollipop with you. Let's be best friends from now on, okay?"
Benjamin treated lollipops like treasure, yet he was actually willing to give one to the new classmate. Instantly, several little boys in the preschool class burst into tears.
Amid a chorus of crying, Nicholas and Benjamin formed a deep friendship.
Preschool got out pretty early, and by three o'clock in the afternoon, grandparents were already arriving one after another to pick up their little ones.
"Nicholas, why haven't you gone home yet?" Benjamin packed up his sunflower backpack and scooted over to the handsome boy. He leaned in close to examine his face, realizing just how adorable he truly was.
"Mommy can't pick me up until four," Nicholas replied slowly.
