Chapter 49 - Strike back

With her chainsword in hand, Evangeline cut down cultist after cultist without even a change in her breath. Her body carved a graceful arc as she landed in the midst of several cultists and lesser daemons.

Bright golden light escaped her body as she slammed into the ground, and all daemons and cultists alike found their lives forfeit. Evangeline, like the rest of the Sanctis, fought with invincible grace and might.

However, unlike the rest of them, her mission was simple: escort Lady Selene to safety. A mission she had long since accomplished. However, a Chaos incursion had no respect for designated battlefields.

"My Lady, it would only become harder to keep you safe now," Evangeline said as she turned to the woman standing behind her.

A lasgun in hand and a chainsword she had picked up from the corpse of the now-dead Arbites assigned to protect her, Selene's once-elegant clothes were ruined and bathed in blood and gore.

Selene had had better days, and this ranked as the worst one. Turning around to look at the small band of children and women hidden in the rubble just behind them, Selene sighed.

"We still have to get to the chapel. Sanctify these weapons so they can use them too," she ordered as she began picking up the bolters, lasguns, and chainswords used by the cultists.

These weapons had been touched by Chaos, so she wasn't so confident in just using them. However, before her stood a Sanctis. In His Grace's report compiled today, he had mentioned that they were highly favored by God.

This meant that even in His absence, as long as there was a Sanctis around, the God-Emperor still remained with them in full.

As expected, as soon as she passed the weapons to Evangeline, a bright golden light erupted from her and onto the gathered weapons. Immediately, they could all see the eyes close as the flesh reverted back to metal.

"Thank you," Selene said to the silent sister, who merely stood and watched her actions.

Selene went around sharing the weapons with the adults in the small band of people that followed them. She didn't expect much from them, but her augments weren't there just for show.

She had long since calculated their chances of survival, and it was pretty low… Her own chances of survival were high due to the presence of Evangeline, but she couldn't say the same for the others.

Hence, the best option was to simply equip everyone to defend themselves. She hoped that by using the sensors—though most had failed—she would be able to direct and lead them to safety. It was their only option, after all; the chapel in question was on the other side of the town.

It was their best option solely because it was the home base of the Sisters, and if there were any place that would be safe, it would be there or beside His Lordship.

"Let's go," Evangeline suddenly said as they all began moving again.

Cautiously running through the streets as they made their way to the chapel, Selene used her implant for guidance through the chaos. Soon, they came upon a squad of Arbites who immediately joined them upon Selene's orders.

Meanwhile, back on the battlefield, Bastion had managed to regroup with the Sanctis along with other forces as they slowly but surely suppressed the cultists.

"General, I want this area completely sealed off. Execute anything that tries to leave until I give the order," Bastion ordered after a while.

He wanted the Arbites off the streets, but for now, they should still perform their duty as law enforcers for the last time.

Several minutes had passed since the cult uprising began, and despite his speed in dispatching them, it was as if the cult was never going to diminish.

If this continued, his side would run out of ammo… and even worse, due to the fact that the people were now, in essence, stranded in hiding, all supply chains were, in simple terms, halted.

However, through his connection to the sensors, he found the entire uprising too strange.

He had figured that they were illusions mixed into the numbers of the cultists—a very Chaos-like thing to do.

However, even without the illusion, he already expected it to be difficult. With a population of over 250 trillion, even the smallest uprising would boast numbers in the millions and possibly billions.

However, that wasn't what he found annoying—it was the fact that they were equipped. He was slaying them like butter because it was him.

Bolter rounds bounced off his armor due to better technology, and he slaughtered them like killing flies due to his superior physiology. But these people were still equipped with bolter rounds, and through his sensors, he could sense several tanks in several parts of the mid-Hive.

"Area evacuated, my lord," a voice resounded in his ear as he turned to see the other six Sisters appear behind him.

"Excellent. For now, we will be working on closing the rift," Bastion said as he frantically searched through his sensors for it.

They were sensors that could detect even quantum fluctuations. They may not detect Chaos well, but due to their nature, Chaos had highly unstable quantum signatures—those tiny details could be used to find it.

"Yes, my lord," the Sanctis answered.

"Ascrius-21, is it ready?" Bastion asked no one in particular before suddenly slamming his palms together and performing a gesture.

Soon, they all saw a large opening in space as several weapons fell out of it. They were spears and a set of body armor… twelve in total.
