Chapter 52 - **Chapter 52 - Sharon POV**

**Chapter 52 - Sharon POV**

The door swung open slowly.

Some part of me was still hoping I was wrong. That the apartment would be empty. That there would be some explanation I hadn't thought of yet. That Liam would somehow not be here and I would feel ridiculous and drive home and never speak of this to anyone.

The living room light was on.

And I saw everything in one second that lasted a hundred years.

Liam. Madeleine. The red dress on the floor. The blue diamond ring on her finger catching the lamplight like it was proud of itself.

The sound that came out of me wasn't a word. It wasn't even really a scream. It was something that started deep in my chest and tore its way out - raw and animal and nothing like the Sharon Calloway who had said *of course Mr. Brenner, thank you for calling* on the phone three hours ago.

"SHARON-"

Liam was on his feet instantly, scrambling, reaching for his clothes, reaching for me, his face completely drained of color.

I slapped him.

The crack of it split through the apartment and my palm burned and I didn't care. I pulled back and slapped him again, harder, and he caught my wrists and said my name over and over like it meant something, like he had the right to say it-

I wrenched free.

And I went for Madeleine.

She had grabbed the red dress and was clutching it against herself, backing up, her green eyes wide. I crossed the room in three steps and grabbed her arm and she gasped.

"YOU." My voice didn't sound like mine. "You disgusting, cheap, pathetic-" I laughed, and it was not a good laugh, it was the laugh of someone whose chest had just been hollowed out. "At least you couldn't find someone on my level, Liam! At LEAST you could have done that! This woman? THIS one? A cheap secretary who couldn't even keep her own boyfriend from losing his mind over her-"

"Sharon, STOP-" Liam grabbed me from behind, arms locking around my waist, pulling me back. "Stop. Please. Just stop."

"GET YOUR HANDS OFF ME." I thrashed against him, elbow connecting with his ribs, and he grunted but didn't let go. "Don't you touch me. Don't you DARE touch me right now-"

"Please-"

"HOW LONG?" I stopped fighting and just stood there in his arms, breathing hard, staring at Madeleine who had pressed herself against the wall. "How long has this been going on? Tell me. Tell me right now."

Liam said nothing.

That silence was its own answer.

I pulled free of him and stepped back, putting distance between us. I looked at him - really looked at him, the man I had cooked lamb for two days ago, the man whose birthday dinner I had planned for weeks, the man whose watch I had engraved with *always yours* - and I felt something shift inside me. Not break. Shift. Like something that had been held at the wrong angle for a long time finally showing its true shape.

"I'm sorry," Liam said. His voice was wrecked. "Sharon. I am so sorry. Please-"

"Sorry." I repeated the word like I was examining it. Turning it over. Checking it for weight. "You're sorry."

"Babe, I-"

"Don't." The word came out quiet. Dangerously quiet. "Don't call me that."

From behind him, Madeleine straightened. She had pulled the dress back on, her curls still wild, the ring still on her finger. And she looked at Liam with an expression that made my blood turn to something cold and electrical.

"Babe," she said - and she was talking to him, not me, she was looking at my husband and calling him *babe* while I was standing three feet away - "we don't have to do this. It's better this way. Let her go. She knows now. It's done."

I stared at her.

She met my eyes without flinching.

Something snapped.

I moved before I decided to move, crossing the room again, and this time my hand was already raised-

Liam stepped between us.

His chest hit my arm and he held his ground, both hands up, blocking me from her completely. "Sharon. No. Enough."

I looked at him. At his face. At the man standing between me and the woman he had chosen.

That was the moment. That was the image I would carry.

Not the living room. Not the dress on the floor. Not the ring.

Him. Standing between us. Choosing where to stand.

I lowered my hand.

I picked up my bag from where it had fallen by the door. My hands were shaking - I could see them shaking and I couldn't make them stop. I found my keys. I walked to the door.

"I'm going to make you both regret this," I said. My voice was steady. I didn't know how. "Both of you. I promise you that."

"Sharon-" Liam started toward me.

"Don't." I opened the door. "Don't follow me. Don't call me. Don't come home tonight."

And I walked out.

The corridor was quiet. The lift was still slow. I took the stairs again, my hand dragging along the wall because my legs weren't entirely reliable, and I pushed through the building entrance into the cold night air and stood on the pavement and breathed.

In. Out.

In. Out.

My car was across the street. I could see it. I just needed to get to it.

I got to it.

I sat in the driver's seat and put both hands on the wheel and stared through the windscreen at the ordinary street and the ordinary buildings and the ordinary city that had no idea what had just happened and I didn't cry. I had cried on the kitchen floor with the broken vase around me. I had cried already. This was something past crying.

I started the engine.

I drove home.

---

**Liam POV**

The door closed behind her.

The apartment was silent.

I stood in the middle of the living room and stared at the door and listened to her footsteps fade down the corridor and I didn't move. I didn't know what to move toward. I didn't know what came next. I didn't know anything except that the look on Sharon's face when I had stepped between her and Madeleine was going to live in me for a very long time.

Madeleine touched my arm. "Hey. It's okay. It's done now. We can-"

"Give me a minute," I said.

She went quiet.

I pressed both hands over my face. Breathed. Tried to locate something solid in the middle of all of this.

My phone buzzed on the coffee table.

I looked at it. Unknown number. A message.

I picked it up.

*I told her. 😊*

*xoxo - Scarlett*

I read it twice.

Then I read it again.

The name hit me like cold water - like ice, like something physical, like a slap harder than the one Sharon had given me. *Scarlett.* Scarlett Prescott. The girl we had - the girl I had - ten years ago, the girl who had disappeared, the girl whose name had started surfacing like a ghost in everything around us for months-

*I told her.*

She had done this. She had orchestrated this. The anonymous message. The key under the plant. Sharon walking through that door at exactly that moment - all of it, every piece of it, had been *her.*

The phone cracked in my grip.

"Liam?" Madeleine's voice, cautious now. "What is it? What's wrong?"

I lowered the phone slowly.

"Scarlett," I said.

Madeleine went very still.

"She did this." My voice came out low. Controlled. The kind of controlled that sat on top of something that was not controlled at all. "She sent Sharon here. She set the whole thing up." I looked at the message one more time. The little kiss at the end. The casual, cheerful, devastating *xoxo.*

Something dark and absolute moved through me.

"Your days are counting, Scarlett," I said quietly to the empty room. "You think this is over? You think you've won something?" I set the phone down carefully. "You're going to pay for this. Every single thing you have done - you are going to pay for it."

Madeleine said nothing.

Outside, somewhere in the city, Sharon was driving home alone.

And somewhere else, Scarlett Prescott was smiling.

Not for much longer.
