Chapter 2 - chapter 2

"Its Rose...," taking a pause to look at me nervously, "she has awakened the water spirit" she said enviously.

"I cant believe that it is just the two of us left who have not awakened any spirit, what if... "she pause and looks at me the same fear that I am feeling reflected in her eyes.

I take a deep breath and try to muster up a confident smile "Don't worry this means nothing, all we have to is keep on trying to access our inner world"

As I walk I sink into my thoughts remembering a past that no longer exists. There was a time Rose and I were the best of friends giggling together, sharing secrets under the blanket and then everything changed. The sound of screams, the shattering of glass and the roar that changed our once sunny and bright childhoods into a struggle for survival.

We grew up that day and something bright and shiny died in all of us. Rose became someone I did not know, she had a hunger for power and she used all her wits as well as any and all relationships in order to get it. She always had a way to get people to do what she wanted and the ability to generate a sort of halo that drew people to her and since our arrival at haven she has done all in her ability to become the centre of power. Now with her finally coming into her spirit power the days of her ascendancy seem to be much closer.

In a way we are all trying to be powerful as those without power do not survive long as we brutally learnt when we were young.

We then walked towards the door making our way down the hallway to the dining room. The hum of excited voices greats us as we walk towards our table. A group of people surround a dark haired girl, flattering her trying to get her attention and she smiles sweetly back at them but one can clearly see a touch of pride in the way she holds herself. The girls around her look on enviously but also with a hint of anticipation for their own awakening

As I look at her our gazes meet in the air and she smiles slightly with a touch of superiority. My heart clenches in pain but I do not give her the satisfaction of seeing the turmoil that I am in. I look straight into her eyes and then look away as if she is nothing but air to me.

I quickly say a blessing to the Mother Earth and break my greyish flat bread and dip it into the soup bowl before me. I have to hurry up and meet up with my class at the exercise field. After quickly finishing my meal and saying goodbye to Rachel I make my way out of the bunker.

The first thing I do is look up into the sky and from the corner of my eye I can see the reassuring flashes of runes that make up the dome.

In the before after magic came crashing down on us and planes fell out of the sky. Every mechanical object stopped working, and the buildings started to come crumbling down, the animals in the wild mutated and become impervious to our weapons. Many people died before we realised that only by returning to nature and accessing the same magic that destroyed our civilization could we possibly have a chance to survive.

And Lea the greatest witch of her time came up with a way to create the Dome, an intricate mesh of science and magic that protects us from the worst of the predators that roam the great forest beyond the city's border.

Every day I hope to be as great a witch as Lea but my hope keeps dwindling in the face of the harsh reality of a failed awakening.
