I barely remembered how I got out of Kai's office.

My feet moved on their own, carrying me down long corridors I hadn't yet memorized, past faces that blurred into one another. My chest felt tight, too tight, and every breath scraped like something sharp lodged in my ribs.

I had been a fool.

A complete, pathetic fool.

The words echoed louder with every step. 'He used you. He never meant anything he said. You believed him.'

I pressed my lips together, swallowing the burn crawling up my throat. How could he do that? How could he look at me, speak to me like that, and still lie so easily? Like I was nothing more than a piece on a board he could move whenever he pleased.

And maybe I was.

A hollow laugh nearly escaped me, but I choked it down.

What was even the point of me being here?
