Chapter 9 - "How about we team up?"

*Shuffle*

Gerald heard the sound of shuffling in the room and came closer, preparing to kick down the door, before he finally heard a male voice.

"Who's there?"

The weakness and caution in the voice were understandable, but one thing was sure...

'Another human!'

"My name is Gerald. I've been killing zombies along this floor and didn't expect to meet someone who's still alive."

He heard another shuffle, then a few clicks.

*SQUEAK*

The door opened, slightly at first, but then fully when the person realised there were no zombies nearby.

Soon, the other guy came into view.

A lanky young man dressed in loose fitting clothes. His facial features were above average, leaning more on the feminine side, and he was quite tall.

His blue eyes darted here and there, a hint of fear in them, but not so much as the caution and defiance that accompanied.

This was a survivor.

"There's someone who can kill all those zombies?" He exclaimed with a slightly opened mouth, then scratched the back of his head with an awkward smile when he saw Gerald looking at him weirdly.

"Forgive my manners please. I'm still a bit shaken up by the crazy shit that's been going on for the past few days. My name is Bill, but my friends call me Blue. Speaking of my friends, I can't help but wonder if they're doing all right. Damn, I haven't even had time to call any of my..."

"Can I come in? You know, cause zombies?" Gerald interrupted.

"Oh yes. Yes." Blue felt a bit awkward and hurriedly invited Gerald in, bolting the door securely behind them.

As Gerald walked in, he noticed the deliberately arranged state of the room. With food arranged in such a way that perishables were easier reached than long-term, and the things in the house that could be considered weapons just an arm's reach away.

'He's quite meticulous.'

"So which floor are you on? I mean before this Apocalypse started." Blue said, having calmed down. The reason he talked so much previously was partly due to strung up nerves and partly the excitement of seeing another survivor.

"The second floor." Gerald answered and sat directly on the ground, taking a small rest.

"So how did you survive this long?"

Blue sighed.

"Well. I guess you could say that I'm really lucky. I didn't have anyone close to me at the time, so when shit hit the fan, there were no zombies in my vicinity.

"I have the habit of stocking up on food for a few months at a time, and I had just stocked up, so there's no immediate danger of starvation." He let out a bitter smile.

Gerald also sighed, and they were both silent for a few seconds after that, letting the gravity of this so-called Greatest Apocalypse sink in.

Their previous lives were gone.

The government wasn't much anymore, as a large number of high-ranking officials had probably turned in bro zombies already. So in other words, it was very likely they were on their own...

"What about you?" Blue threw the question back to Gerald.

Gerald shrugged, caressing his baseball bat slightly.

"I killed my first zombie less than five minutes in."

Blue gasped.

"I mutated.* He finished, before facing Blue.

"Do you know about that? Mutation?"

Blue was silent for a moment. He took out a cigarette from his pocket, along with a lighter, and ignited it, taking a long drag.

"Yes. I do."

He smiled slightly.

Gerald didn't bother asking further. A certain level of trust was needed before that.

So Gerald stood up.

"How about we team up?"
