Lv Ling tried to calm herself down , soon she stopped panting and she was able to explain the situation to Yang Changtian.
" Mr. Yang , when I woke up today , I noticed that all the sisters I was sharing a tent with were sick , and then when I headed outside , not a single person was in sight , and so far , expect for us two and Ms. Liu , everyone else in this camp is sick. They all have very high fevers and they convulse and twitch unnaturally. My preliminary diagnosis is that they ingested something poisonous , and their bodies are trying to fight against it. "
Yang Changtian's eyes widened and he immediately rushed over to Li Cheng's tent . He found Li Cheng convulsing on his bed , he was drenched in sweat.
" Is there nothing we can do ? " Yang Changtian yelled over to Lv Ling.
" I'll try , " Lv Ling replied arching Li Cheng. Yang Changtian stood up to give her space , and Lv Ling sat down on Li Cheng's bed , she checked his pulse first ,then she moved on to check his fever . After a while she stood up and rushed out , and Yang Changtian followed her out.
" Dr. Lv , what is it ? " he asked her.
" My preliminary guess was correct , they did ingest something. We need to make them eject it out. Mr. Yang, do you know where the charcoal is ? " she asked back.
Yang Changtian shook his head , " I don't really know, but they might be near the kitchen area."
Lv Ling nodded and the two of them headed over to the kitchen area , they began to look around , but they couldn't find any charcoal. It was as if someone had hidden the charcoal away deliberately.
Then Yang Changtian remembered something , Jin Wei had some charcoal in his makeup box , he used it to colour the eyebrows. Excited she informed Lv Ling , who immediately rushed over to Jin Wei and Da Xiong's tents. The both of them were not better , they too were twitching and convulsing on their beds , but alarmingly Jin Wei was scratching at his head alot , while Da Xiong was clutching his head tightly. While Lv Ling rushed over to find the charcoal Yang Changtian rushed to Jin Wei's side. " Jin Wei , what's wrong ? " .
Jin Wei cracked his eyes open , seeing who it was , he gathered his remaining strength , " My….. Head…. Hurts.." he groaned.
" Jin Wei , don't worry Dr. Lv is trying to find a solution. So hang on."
Jin Wei and Da Xiong both groaned before nodding their heads.
" I found it ! " Lv Ling's voice rang out.
She rushed out again , so Yang Changtian followed her. She went over to the kitchen and crushed the charcoal into a bowl before mixing it with water. She didn't have enough of everyone so she decided to focus on the important people . She handed a bowl over to Yang Changtian , "Mr.Yang , have Mr. Li drink this ,it'll induce vomiting effectively ejecting the harmful substance he ingested." Yang Changtian nodded and rushed off to Li Cheng 's tent , while Lv Ling went over to help Jin Wei and Da Xiong .
Yang Changtian supported Li Cheng up and made him drink the charcoal water , and just seconds later , Li Cheng began to retch , Yang Changtian barely managed to avoid the vomit.
Li Cheng managed to empty out his whole stomach , and he collapsed back onto bed , Yang Changtian fetched him some water and after he washed his mouth and drank it, Yang Changtian pulled out a piece of cloth and he wiped his mouth.
Li Cheng seemed fine for a while , but he suddenly began to clutch his head , " It hurts ! " he screamed. Yang Changtian was helpless , so he ran outside to find Lv Ling. He saw her running out of Jin Wei and Da Xiong's tents . She spotted him and ran over.
" Dr. Lv , it isn't working ," Yang Changtian told her , his voice panicked.
Lv Ling was biting her thumb , trying to think , " Was my diagnosis wrong ? " she muttered to herself.
Yang Changtian sat down on a rock and he also began to think hard , what could it be ?
Both Lv Ling and Yang Changtian were so deep in their thoughts , they didn't realize that multiple figures were sneaking up on them. Shaman Hu was amongst them , and she had a crazed look on her face. The ambushers continued to sneak up closer and closer to Yang Changtian and Lv Ling, who still hadn't noticed them.
A figure got close enough to Yang Changtian and it lunged at him from behind. But just before his claws could reach Yang Changtian , a small dagger struck the figure right on the forehead , making him stagger back . Yang Changtian was startled by the movement and he turned around to see the Crazy falling back onto another Crazy who also stumbled , after regaining it's balance , the Crazy lunged at him , but this time Yang Changtian was ready , he pulled his sword out and he slashed at the Crazy remembering Liu Ying's lesson , he severed all the tendons on the Crazy. Taking this chance Yang Changtian looked around to spot the person who helped him , while he didnt see them , Yang Changtian immediately recognised Liu Ying's daggers. He exhaled loudly , he was relieved. But his happiness was short lived. Almost immediately , multiple Crazies jumped out, they all swarmed over to Yang Changtian , luckily there weren't many. And Liu Ying continued to attack the Crazies from her hiding place. She was like a shadow, confusing the Crazies , this made it easier for Yang Changtian to attack them.
While the Crazies attacked Yang Changtian , Shaman Hu took the chance to sneak up on Lv Ling who was just standing in the corner holding a small dagger. Lv Ling spotted Shaman Hu and she lifted the dagger and pointed it at her.
" Crazy old bat , what do you want ? How could you do that to us ?" she said , her voice frighteningly calm.
Shaman Hu approached her cackling loudly , the eerie noise sending shivers down her spine.
Yang Changtian heard the unbearable sound and he turned to see Lv Ling being confronted by Shaman Hu. He slashed down on the Crazies ,and he ran towards Dr. Lv , but to his horror he saw Shaman Hu knock out the dagger from Lv Ling's hands and grab her by the neck. It was a bizarre sight to see an old frail looking lady lifting Lv Ling by the neck choking her. Shaman Hu's grip on Lv Ling's neck got tighter and tighter and Lv Ling's face only became darker .
Shaman Hu let out a final cackle, but when she tried to tighten her grip again , her hands seemed frozen in place . Then she felt an ice cold sensation travel downward from her raised hand , seeping throughout her body. The sensation left her unable to move .
Lv Ling noticed this change and she exerted force , managing to break away from Shaman Hu's grip.
Shaman Hu was completely paralyzed , only able to make unintelligible sounds from her mouth ,which was still open from her previous cackling.
Yang Changtian walked over and stood infront of her.
Shaman Hu saw him and she began to babble, Yang Changtian just flashed her a charming smile , " Shaman Hu , what a pleasant surprise, " he said , his voice saturated with anger.
Shaman Hu was about to begin her babbling yet again when she saw a blue flash leap down from a rooftop. The figure approached Yang Changtian and stood next to him. Shaman Hu's eyes widened , " Argh…. Argh….. Ahh…..ah.." she kept babbling .
Liu Ying smiled at her sweetly , " I do apologise for meddling and ruining your grand plan, Shaman Hu, " Liu Ying said walking closer , she pulled out a small dagger and she began to draw patterns on Shaman Hu's neck ,still smiling. " But I must say , I'm quite disappointed with you. You created this whole master plan but you left out one crucial detail , you forgot all about me or you just underestimated me," Liu Ying began to giggle, still drawing on Shaman Hu's neck with the dagger.
Every swipe of the dagger on her neck sent shivers down Shaman Hu's spine . Her hurry to get away led her to make a grave mistake , she had completely forgotten about Liu Ying.
Liu Ying's dagger slowly made her way towards her hand , " Wondering why you can't move I suppose ? It's simple , " Liu Ying put her dagger down and she pulled a very thin , barely visible needle from the Shaman's hand. " I bet you didn't even feel it," Liu Ying chuckled at her.
Shaman Hu's eyes got wider , when did she drug her ?
Seeing her confusion , Liu Ying smiled and approached her , " You should really think twice before trying to strangle an innocent bystander next time , " she whispered.
Then from the corner of her eye , Shaman Hu saw a Crazy silently sneaking up on Lv Ling , who was unaware of the danger she was in . Yang Changtian and Liu Ying were also focused on her completely , but she had to keep their attention on her. So she turned and looked straight into Liu Ying's eyes , before looking down and babbling softly , trying to seem remorseful of her actions . With every step the Crazy got closer to Lv Ling , she got happier . If she got rid of Lv Ling , they wouldn't be able to save anyone !
Liu Ying looked at her seemingly remorseful behavior before laughing loudly , startling both Yang Changtian and Shaman Hu . Shaman Hu raised her head , Liu Ying smiled at her ,and without turning around she threw her dagger in Lv Ling's direction behind her. Shaman Hu's eyes widened , ' No ! ' she screeched , well she tried , it came out sounding like a choking animal.
Yang Changtian was also surprised by this , he whipped around to see Liu Ying's dagger strike a Crazy that was sneaking up on Lv Ling right in the neck. The Crazy made some choking sounds before collapsing on the floor. Meanwhile Lv Ling was frozen in place.
Moments before , sensing something wrong with Shaman Hu , Lv Ling managed to break away from her grip. Yang Changtian caught up with them so Lv Ling retreated behind him. Then she saw a blue figure leaping down from a nearby rooftop , she recognized the figure as Liu Ying from the flowing blue robe she was wearing , the figure nodded at her as she approached Yang Changtian and Shaman Hu.
Lv Ling was observing Liu Ying closely , she was surprised to see that except for the way she carried herself , she didn't resemble Hei Jingyou one bit , Liu Ying seemed quiet but she was wild and unpredictable , very different from the calm , protective and cautious Hei Jingyou. So it wasn't surprising no one had figured out her real identity yet. Lv Ling suddenly heard a cold laugh , when she raised her head, she saw Liu Ying laughing at Shaman Hu , who had her head down. Suddenly without even looking back , Liu Ying launched the dagger she was playing with right at her ! Lv Ling was frozen in place, ' Was she going to kill me ? ' she thought panicking , so she closed her eyes tightly , but the dagger whipped past her. And she heard some choking noises followed by a loud thud , whipping around she found a Crazy twitching on the ground , blood spraying from its neck where the dagger had embedded itself.
Lv Ling exhaled shakingly , she hadn't noticed the Crazy , she was just mere centimeters away from being ripped apart. She looked at Liu Ying , who still had her back turned to her .
Yang Changtian who was standing next to Liu Ying was shocked , he hadn't expected her to attack that suddenly . He observed Liu Ying's expression closely , she had a mocking smile , looking straight at Shaman Hu , whose eyes were getting redder . Shaman Hu began to screech again , probably cursing them out. But Liu Ying wasn't phased at the slightest, she slowly reached to her waist bag , pulling out a small metal box , she opened it and took out another small needle.
Shaman Hu saw this and she struggled hard , trying to break free , but of course , she was frozen in place , she watched in horror as Liu Ying waved the needle around in front of her.
Liu Ying slowly approached the Shaman and she stretched her hand out , positioning the needle behind the Shaman's ear , Liu Ying flashed her one final smile before pricking the needle into her.
Shaman Hu continued to make some animalistic noises , but each sound was getting progressively fainter , eventually she couldn't make any sounds anymore and she slumped down motionless.
Liu Ying turned to Yang Changtian and shot him a look.
" Ms. Liu -" Yang Changtian began but he was interrupted by Liu Ying.
" Oh , I'm back to Ms.Liu now , I faintly remember a certain someone calling me Liu Ying before , " she said with a teasing look in her eyes.
Yang Changtian was speechless for a moment , but he too began to chuckle , " I do apologise Ms. Liu , I didn't mean to offend you."
" Please , such a minor thing doesn't offend me , " Liu Ying brushed him off. " But I must say , I've been gone for a day or so , and everything is already going downhill."
Yang Changtian nodded and explained the whole situation to her , Lv Ling slowly approached the both of them.
Yang Changtian spotted her and waved , " Ms. Liu , this is Dr. Lv , she was incharge of taking care of you when you were unconscious."
Lv Ling had not expected an introduction so suddenly so she froze in place , Liu Ying turned around , now that she was awake , Liu Ling exuded a cold aura , making her seem sharp and unapproachable. As Liu Ying directed her gaze onto Lv Ling , she felt the temperature drop. Lv Ling hurriedly nodded and introduced herself.
" Lady Liu , pleased to be of service. I am Lv Ling."
It might've been Lv Ling's imagination but she saw Liu Ying's gaze soften when she heard her voice.
Liu Ying nodded back , " Dr. Lv , I am grateful for your help , and please you don't have to be so formal with me , you can either call me Ms. Liu or Sister Liu. But I must say this again , I am extremely grateful to you and I do apologise for any inconveniences I caused you " she smiled at her , this time , it wasn't her creepy smile or her smile filled with malice , but it was a genuine smile filled with warmth.
Yang Changtian was dazed at this, had she always been this friendly ?
Seeing her smile, Lv Ling immediately relaxed. She returned Liu Ying's smile, " Please don't even mention it , It was my pleasure to help you .Then I shall address you as Ms. Liu ."
Liu Ying nodded at her, still smiling brightly.
Yang Changtian shot a look at Liu Ying and cleared his throat, " Ladies now that introductions are done , we ought to brainstorm a solution for our current predicament," he interrupted.
Liu Ying nodded at him , " Let's go discuss this in detail ."
" What about her ? " Yang Changtian asked, pointing at Shaman Hu .
" Her ? Oh , she's good for a few hours , I used some strong sedatives ,even if she wakes up , until that needle is removed , she won't be able to move."
Lv Ling also nodded along , she was surprised at Liu Ying's medical knowledge, ' Just how in the world is she this talented , tsk tsk tsk , some people are really god's favourite,' she thought to herself, trailing behind Liu Ying , who lead them into her tent.
They all sat down , Liu Ying sat down on her bed , and she patted the spot next to her. Lv Ling was hesitant , but her hero was asking her to sit with her , there's no way she's going to let this chance go. So she moved over and sat down next to Liu Ying. Yang Changtian just looked around and settled down on a wooden chair near the bed.
" Now , you two , tell me everything that happened while I was asleep, don't miss any details , no matter how insignificant it is."
Lv Ling and Yang Changtian nodded at each other and filled Liu Ying in on everything that happened.
After they were done , Liu Ying zoned out thinking hard . Yang Changtian was also zoning out while Lv Ling , who found the awkward silence unbearable , began to fidget with her hands.
Suddenly both Liu Ying and Yang Changtian jumped up and looked at each other .
" You thinking what I'm thinking ? " Liu Ying asked him. And Yang Changtian nodded back, " The kitchen ! "
Lv Ling also realized what they were talking about , the only difference between them , and the ones who were sick ? They didn't eat any of the food. So the food had to be the problem !
The three of them rushed over to the kitchen , Liu Ying began to look through the pots that were used to cook , while Lv Ling and Yang Changtian began to file through the ingredients used . Unfortunately they couldn't find anything.
" We won't be able to find anything like this. Let's go check the patients directly, " Liu Ying proposed.
" But Ms. Liu they're only showcasing signs of poisoning , " Lv Ling cut in.
" What symptoms exactly ? "
" Fever , twitching, headaches , abdominal pain. We gave them charcoal water hoping they'd throw up and eject the poison from their bodies , but it only made them worse."
" Worse ? How ? " Liu Ying continued to push.
" After they vomited , they were fine for a while , but then they all began to complain about major headaches , Li Cheng and Jin Wei kept clutching their heads, " Yang Changtian cut in.
Liu Ying's eyes widened at this , " How in the world could I be this stupid," she said before marching off.
" Ms. Liu ? What do you mean ? " Yang Changtian asked while following her. She walked right into Li Cheng's tent , sitting down in his bed , she checked his temperature. Li Cheng cracked his eye open, and he saw Liu Ying examining him , seeing that he was conscious, Liu Ying took his hand and placed it on her other hand. " Mr. Li , can you hear me , if yes , please tap me once."
Li Cheng tapped once faintly , " Okay then Mr. Li , does your head still hurt ? " he tapped again , " Is it a stabbing pain or a creeping pain ? tap once for the former , and don't tap for the latter." Li Cheng didn't tap , " So it's a creeping pain , does it feel like something crawling ? Tap once if the answer is yes ." Li Cheng tapped once .
A horrifying thought was creeping up on Yang Changtian and Lv Ling , they might have contracted the zombie fungus !
Liu Ying immediately drew a seal on Li Cheng's forehead. " Mr. Li , don't be afraid I'm just checking something," she comforted Li Cheng who nodded.
Liu Ying then placed her palm on Li Cheng's forehead, and she closed her eyes.
She reopened her eyes after a while , and she looked towards Yang Changtian . Yang Changtian didn't even need to hear it , he already knew, so he just signaled them to go outside. '
Lv Ling and Liu Ying followed him outside. He walked over to a tree and punched it hard.
Liu Ying whispered something Lv Ling , who immediately nodded and rushed off before approaching Yang Changtian and patting him on the back, " Ms. Liu , how useless am I ? "
" You're not useless- " Liu Ying began but she was interrupted by Yang Changtian .
" You don't have to lie to comfort me Ms. Liu. I am the leader of this mission, but I've done nothing so far. You're the person who took care of everything from the beginning , and now I couldn't even fulfill the most basic of responsibilities , I couldn't keep my members safe. If that isn't useless , I don't know what is."
Liu Ying waited silently , letting Yang Changtian pour his emotions out.
" And now , they've all contracted the zombie fungus, how can we even save them now ? " Yang Changtian finished .
Liu Ying was looking directly at him , " Are you done ? Can I speak now ? "
Yang Changtian was taken back , but he nodded.
" Wonderful , Now , first of all, I'm not the one to comfort people , and I certainly am not someone who'll baby you. You might think you played a passive role so far , but that's wrong . Even if you did, what's wrong with that? You're our leader, an essential component of our team. If we're comparing our team to a human body, you would be the heart, at the center of it all. You have your tasks, and I have mine; we have different responsibilities, and so far, you're doing wonderfully. Secondly, you couldn't predict this catastrophe; that's normal. You aren't a strategist, and you certainly aren't a god. So why are you blaming yourself? If anything, I am to blame for this matter. I couldn't predict it either."
Yang Changtian sniffed , " But Ms. Liu, you were unconscious all this time."
" With all due respect Mr. Yang , I am simply trying to make a point , so stop your counterarguments and just listen. "
Yang Changtian pouted , " I didn't even say anything ," he muttered under his breath.
Liu Ying shot him a dirty look before continuing , " So no , none of this makes you useless, you can't judge a monkey by its ability to swim , and you can't judge a fish by its ability to climb trees. People are like that too , you have your skills and tasks , and I have mine , I personally think you've been doing your tasks wonderfully. And finally when did I ever say that they can't be cured ? "
Yang Changtian slowly lifted his head , he saw Liu Ying smiling at him , not the spine chilling one ,but the warm one she gave Lv Ling earlier , " Let's go , I asked Lv Ling to prepare some things , she must be waiting for us ."
Liu Ying grabbed Yang Changtian's wrist and she dragged him along towards Li Cheng's tent , Yang Changtian looked at her weirdly , but Liu Ying just ignored him.
Lv Ling was already waiting for them at Li Cheng's tent , she had prepared some medicine. Yang Changtian studied the medicine curiously , " What is this ? " He asked, picking some up.
" That is a mixture of turmeric , ginger , echinacea and black walnuts , all of them are herbs with excellent antifungal properties, " Lv Ling explained, " Ms. Liu asked me to prepare an antifungal medicine, this is all I have ."
Yang Changtian turned to Liu Ying who was checking on Li Cheng again , after finishing she turned towards Lv Ling , " Dr. Lv , can you make a pill from these medicines ? "
Lv Ling nodded , " I can Ms. Liu , i'll get started on them right away, " she got up to leave.
" Mr. Yang , do you mind lending Dr. Lv a hand ? " Liu Ying asked, turning towards him.
Yang Changtian was confused at first , but then he understood Liu Ying's concerns , there could be Crazies left and Dr. Lv is not that capable of defending herself against them. He nodded and followed Dr. Lv to the medic tent where she began to grind the medicine into a fine paste. After she was done with the grinding , she used a pill cutter to carefully portion the paste into pills with the correct dosage .
Yang Changtian was surprised at Lv Ling's speed; she managed to make dozens of pills within an hour. She added the pills into two small bottles and handed one to Yang Changtian , " One pill per person twice daily , we don't have enough for one round but I'll make another batch later."
Yang Changtian nodded and accepted the bottle , together they went outside and they spotted Liu Ying exiting Jin Wei and Da Xiong's tent.
While they were making the pills , Liu Ying patted Li Cheng on the head , seeing that he didn't open his eyes , she began to stroke his hair softly , " Don't worry baby brother , nothing will happen to any of you under my watch," Li Cheng's furrowed forehead softened for a while.
Liu Ying stood up and went around checking up on everyone. She stopped in front of a tent , as she went inside and activated her skill , trying to confirm the fungi's location she spotted something weird , she mentally made a note to inform Yang Changtian and then she continued with her examination . Moving on she went to check up on Mo Ling and Zhou Zilong next , after finishing up with Zhou Zilong , she went over to Mo Ling and she sat down next to him , she patted his head too and seeing that he didn't wake up either , she softly stroke his head too , " You grew up so much , don't worry Oldest Sister is here, it'll be alright after a while, just hang on a while longer okay , " she whispered to him softly. Finally she reached Jin Wei and Da Xiong's tent , she went inside and first she checked up on Da Xiong , he felt her hand one his forehead , so he cracked his eyes open , Liu Ying noticed and smiled at him , " Hang on for a little while longer big guy, we're almost done with the medicine okay , " Liu Ying whispered to him , Da Xiong stared at for a while longer before nodding slightly . Liu Ying then stood up and walked over to Jin Wei , after she was done examining them , she stepped outside , she spotted Yang Changtian and Lv Ling exiting the medic tent, so she waved them over.
When they got closer , Liu Ying walked over and grabbed Yang Changtian , Lv Ling tactfully gave them some space.
" What is it ? " Yang Changtian asked her, confused.
" I just noticed something unusual , you know the new tent they erected near the river ? " she asked him.
Yang Changtian nodded , " Yes , we put it up recently for the survivors, what's wrong with it ? "
" Well , I went around checking everyone , but in that tent , there were 3 people who didn't have any fungi in them."
" What ! Were they completely unaffected ? "
Liu Ying nodded , " You better keep an eye on them ."
Yang Changtian looked at her confused , " You think they might be working with Shaman Hu ? "
" You read my mind , " Liu Ying replied.
Yang Changtian nodded again , " Just in case , I don't want to hurt them , do you have any sedatives left over ? "
Liu Ying nodded and pulled out a small bottle , she handed it over to Yang Changtian who slipped it inside his robe.
Liu Ying then turned around and waved Lv Ling over.
" Now , I will drain the life force from the fungi , and you two will feed each patient a pill each to get rid of any remaining fungi, " Liu Ying explained.
Yang Changtian wanted to argue when he heard that Liu Ying was going to use her personal skill again , but Liu Ying quickly reassured him , " Mr. Yang , it's only a few fungi this time , don't worry , I'll be completely fine after a good sleep ."
" Last time I checked, you lied to me about this, " Yang Changtian retorted.
Liu Ying sighed , " I apologize for that okay ? But I'm telling the truth this time , the fungi is still young now , so it won't take much effort for me to absorb its vital energy. "
Yang Changtian glared at her for a while before giving up and finally agreeing.
Liu Ying moved to the center of the village , and she drew a seal on the ground , " Ready ? " she yelled over to Yang Changtian and Lv Ling who immediately positioned themselves near the patients; Yang Changtian as over at Li Cheng's tent ,while Lv Ling was over at Jin Wei's and Da Xiong's. " Yes ! " They yelled back.
Hearing their confirmation, Liu Ying slapped her palm down in the middle of the seal and began to chant. Her senses told her where Yang Changtian and Lv Ling were, so she isolated Li Cheng, Jin Wei, and Da Xiong. After she was done, she began to search their bodies for the fungi. Locating it, she sent tendrils of her energy to fight it. Lv Ling watched in fascination as two light greenish-blue vines of energy entered the tent and reached over to Jin Wei and Da Xiong. The vines traveled up their bodies and entered through their noses. Soon after the light green-blue energy of the vines began to turn red , and after a while , the vines withdrew from Jin Wei and Da Xiong , taking this as her sign , she quickly approached them and fed them the pill. Then she rushed out , seeing that Yang Changtian was also done , they nodded at each other before hurrying off to other tents , they repeated the process , till they only had two tents left.
Yang Changtian remembered what Liu Ying said , " I'll take this tent , you take the other one."
Lv Ling nodded and she quickly entered to treat the patients , meanwhile , Yang Changtian walked over to the other tent and he waited till Liu Ying's vines finished their job , he noticed that the vines singled out three people, he quietly stood up and began to feed the others medicine , when it was finally their chance , he discretely pulled out the sedatives Liu Ying gave him and he poured them over the three remaining pills, shaking the pills to make sure they were covered , he carefully fed the medicine to the three of them. He'll ask someone to arrest them later.
He exited the tent to see that some of them were already waking up , Li Cheng limped out of his tent so he rushed over to help him. Seeing Yang Changtian , Li Cheng broke out in a smile , " Brother Yang ! You did it ."
