Chapter 96 - Normal Days.

The evaluation result was one page.

"Competent. Unremarkable. No further review warranted."

The evaluators had written it in the dry language of men who had been told to find nothing and had found nothing, and the nothing they had found was exactly what Hiruzen had needed.

He read it once, set it down, and pulled a blank folder from the drawer. The folder was white, which meant it was official.

He wrote on it: Akane Yanagi, special appointment under Tsunade's chain, academy-equivalent certification backdated to the year of his registration. He signed and sealed it with the Hokage's stamp.

Hiruzen placed it in the locked cabinet behind his desk, where the village's most sensitive records lived. He locked the cabinet and put the key in his pocket.

The gap was closed, and the only man who could close it had closed it. The closing looked like a leash but functioned like armour, and Hiruzen thought about the difference between the two from his position.

Danzo received the sealed result that afternoon.

He read it in his office, alone, with the blinds drawn and the light thin. The paper was clean, the signature was clear, and the seal was Hokage-grade, which meant it could not be challenged without challenging the village's highest authority, and that was exactly what Hiruzen had intended.

Danzo set the paper down. He did not rage or tear it. He folded it once, along the crease, and placed it in his own file.

On that file he wrote a new note: Protected from above. More interesting, not less.

He leaned back in his chair and stared at the ceiling. The thought that came to him was the thought of a man who had just seen a door he had not expected, with a lock that looked expensive, marking the door it guards.

For him, the boy had just become harder to reach, which meant the boy had just become worth reaching.

And this was what Danzo wanted to gain from the test.

On the other side, Akane was dealing with the reports too.

The White Zetsu report came through the garden earth at midday, a whisper of roots and memory, and Akane knelt and pressed his hand to the soil to listen.

"Boats again," the reporter said. "Questions are moving to new islands. They have become better and more organised. They are looking for someone with unusual hair and high stamina."

'Uzumaki survivors.' Akane thought. It meant that the Kiri hunt was still active, and it was spreading.

Akane stood for a while before answering. He sent a message tag to the island: drill schedule, formation checks, nothing dramatic.

He went back to the mission desk, stamped three more slips and ate lunch with the clerk who praised his stamps. The afternoon was ordinary and necessary, and the ordinary was the armour he had chosen to wear.

That night, the three of them met in the dreamscape above the garden where the swing still hung from the old tree. Akane, Mito, and Tsunade met, with Kushina asleep elsewhere and the real world quiet beyond the dream's edge.

They did not greet each other as they had already greeted each other in the real world, in the Senju home, over dinner, where Tsunade had squeezed Akane's hand under the table, and Mito had watched them with the expression of a woman who had been waiting for something to begin.

Now they were here, and the beginning was a problem.

"Everything we have built runs against one wall," Akane said. "The bridge works, but the connection cost is high. The message tags have a ceiling of five on cheap materials."

"The formations need upkeep. Kurama's chakra has been carrying the load, but going further would start leaking the signature. And the signature of a bijuu is not something villages ignore."

He said it plainly, the way Mito had taught him to speak in rooms where the truth was a weapon. Tsunade listened with her arms folded, and Mito listened with her hands folded. The garden was quiet except for the sound of wind through leaves that did not exist.

"Scaling needs power," Akane said. "Power on a scale that villages do not sell."

Mito was quiet for a moment. Then she spoke, and her voice was the voice of a woman who had been thinking about this since before Akane had brought it to her.

"Roran sits on something older than villages," she said. "The Dragon Vein."

The words settled in the garden as stones dropped into still water. Tsunade's expression did not change. She had heard the name before, in the Capital, in the context of Himari and Seramu and the Wind Daimyo's letter, and she knew what the name meant.

"The Vein is not a toy," Mito said. "Kaguya warned us. It is older than the village system, older than the bijuu, older than the Senju and the Uchiha. It runs beneath Roran, and it has power that no village can match."

"And you want us to use it," Tsunade said.

"I want us to prepare the approach," Mito said. "The political door first. Himari is the Wind Daimyo's daughter, and Seramu is the Queen of Roran, and Akane has already made contact. The Wind thread runs through them. Kaguya's expertise is on standby. You set the conditions."

Tsunade unfolded her arms. "The conditions are these: we do not touch the Vein until we understand it. We do not approach Seramu until we have something to offer. We do not move until the political door is open, and the door opens through Himari, not through us."

Mito nodded. "Agreed."

Akane said nothing. He looked at the violet sky, at the swing moving in wind that did not exist, and he thought of the file in Hiruzen's locked cabinet which was seen by the zetsu, the leash that was also armour.

He thought of the Dragon Vein beneath Roran, and he understood that the game had just become larger than Fire Country.

"Two boards," Mito said, as if she could see what Akane was thinking.

"One for the day. One for the night."

"One for the day," Akane agreed at her words, and he understood she was trying to confirm his thoughts.

He pressed his hand to the dream-soil and felt the island answer. The drills would continue. The formations would hold. The Kiri front was not a problem to be solved, but a pressure to be managed.

The management was decisions made here in the dream that would be carried out in the morning, messages to send, schedules to set, and the ordinary repetition of keeping a family safe while the world moved around them.

The dream held for a moment longer, the violet sky and the garden and the swing, and then it released them. They were back in the real world, in the Senju home, where the lamps were out, and the village was quiet.

Except Akane, who went back to the dreamspace, as politics wasn't the only thing he could discuss in dreams.

The morning came slowly to Akane, who had spent the whole night in the dreamspace with Kaguya. If it was possible, he wanted to continue the dream world, but he knew that to make it a reality, he had to leave it.

Akane sat on the porch and watched the village wake. The lights came on in the houses across the street, one by one, the way lights come on when people are getting ready for a day that will be ordinary and necessary.

A merchant opened his shutters; a child ran toward the academy, and a pair of chunin walked past the compound wall, their voices low, their purpose clear.

The leash was comfortable on paper, and it was invisible, in fact. The boy who wore it sat on the porch and watched the village wake.

'One board for the day. One for the night.' Akane thought of the last night and the plans the two had made for Roran, which were something he heard because he had to.

As for what would happen, even he didn't know, and all he knew was that both of the boards had roads leading somewhere he had not been.

Now the village was awake and the day had begun.

Akane Yanagi, special appointment under Tsunade's chain, academy-equivalent certification backdated and sealed by Hokage authority, sat on the porch and waited for the first knock of the morning, which would be Kushina, who always knocked too loudly.

My sessionals (tests) have started, so the uploads will be delayed. The publish-in-future function seems to be glitching when I was trying to set the next 3 chapters. So I will just do so after I am done with tomorrow's exam.
