Chapter 25 - chapter 25

Days turned into weeks, and Adrian's life continued in a blur of obligations and meaningless conversations with Victoria. Despite the grand wedding, the mansion full of guests, and the lavish lifestyle, Adrian could not shake the emptiness gnawing at him.

Every corner of the house seemed to echo Grace's absence. Her laughter, her touch, the warmth she had brought into his life—all of it was gone, and in its place, he was left with a hollow void.

One evening, after another tense dinner with Victoria, Adrian retreated to his study. He needed to be alone, to think, but there was no clarity. The constant feeling of regret consumed him.

He opened the drawer where he had kept Grace's things—her favorite necklace, a handwritten note she had left for him before leaving the country, a photo of the two of them smiling, carefree, before everything had spiraled out of control.

Adrian picked up the note, his fingers trembling as he read it for the hundredth time:

"Adrian, I've always believed in you. I trusted you when no one else did. You were my home, my peace. But if you can't trust me now, if you can't choose me, then I have to let go. I love you, but I can't keep fighting alone. Please, don't forget that I will always care for you, no matter what."

Tears welled up in Adrian's eyes as he realized the truth. He had lost her. He had lost the love of his life because of his own pride, his indecision, and his failure to see what was right in front of him.

Adrian paced the room, his mind a chaotic storm of emotions. How could he have let it come to this? He thought of Grace, the way she had looked at him with such trust and love, and how he had destroyed it with his choices. The guilt crushed him, suffocating him in its weight.

He grabbed his phone and scrolled through the contacts. He thought about calling her, but what could he say now? What could he possibly say to make it right?

A message from Grace flashed on the screen. His heart skipped a beat, and he clicked on it, his hands trembling.

"Adrian, I'm doing well. I've started a new life here. I hope you find the peace you've been looking for. Take care of yourself."

Her words hit him like a punch to the gut. She had moved on. She had found a way to live without him. And he, on the other hand, was stuck in a marriage he hadn't wanted, with a woman who would never be Grace.

Later that evening, Victoria found Adrian sitting in the study, staring blankly at the wall. She walked over, concern on her face.

"Adrian, are you okay?" she asked gently, though her voice had a sharp edge.

He didn't respond at first, his gaze fixed on nothing in particular. Victoria's patience seemed to wear thin. "You know, I've tried to understand why you're so distant, but I can't keep pretending anymore. This... this thing between us, it's not working."

Adrian looked up at her, his eyes empty. "I know," he whispered, the pain in his voice impossible to hide.

Victoria's lips tightened in frustration. "You're still thinking about Grace, aren't you? You're still pining for her, even though she's long gone. Well, guess what, Adrian? She's not coming back. You need to face reality."

Adrian stood abruptly, the tension in the room rising. "Don't you dare speak her name," he spat, his voice shaking with anger. "You have no idea what she means to me!"

"Then why did you marry me?" Victoria shot back, her eyes flashing with fury. "Why did you let me believe you wanted this life with me if it was only going to be a substitute for what you lost?"

Adrian paused, unable to answer. The truth was too painful, and there were no words left.

Days passed, and Adrian's despair deepened. He spent countless hours sitting in silence, his thoughts consumed with Grace. He couldn't eat, couldn't sleep, couldn't focus on anything. Every part of him yearned for her, but the distance between them seemed insurmountable.

One night, he stood outside the mansion, looking at the stars. It was the same place where he and Grace had once shared their dreams for the future, before everything fell apart.

With a heavy heart, Adrian made a decision. He had to find Grace. He had to tell her everything. If there was any chance of them being together again, he needed to fight for it, no matter the cost.

The next morning, Adrian booked a flight and made arrangements. He couldn't wait any longer. He couldn't live with the regret any longer.

In a moment of clarity, he realized he had nothing left to lose. He would face whatever consequences came with his actions, but he would do whatever it took to win Grace back. He owed it to her, and he owed it to himself.

As he packed his bag, Adrian's phone buzzed. It was a message from his father: "I'm sorry, son. I've made mistakes, but you can't let your love slip away. Please, don't repeat the mistakes I made."

Grace sat by the window of her apartment, gazing out at the city lights. The silence in the room was deafening, and with each passing day, the ache in her chest grew. She hadn't heard from Adrian since she left, and the pain of their separation gnawed at her insides.

I love him. The thought played over and over in her mind, but it was quickly followed by the memory of everything he had put her through—his failure to trust her, his decision to marry Victoria, and the hurtful things he had said. Could she really go back?

She stood and walked over to the small table where she kept their photo from when they were happy. She traced the edge of the picture, her heart aching with each touch.

"Why did it have to be this way?" she whispered to herself.

She had tried to move on, to put the past behind her. But it wasn't that simple. Every time she thought of Adrian, she couldn't help but wonder if there was a chance for them. Could they rebuild what they once had? Was it too late?

Adrian's plane touched down in the city where Grace had been staying. He couldn't allow another moment to pass without seeing her. Every step he took toward the airport felt like a step toward redemption, toward the possibility of making things right.

The thought of her—her smile, the way she held his hand, the way she stood by him when no one else would—kept him going. He couldn't lose her. Not after everything he had been through.

Adrian had learned many things in the time they were apart, most importantly, that he couldn't change the past, but he could change how he handled the present and future. He had to be better—for her, for their love.

As he stepped out of the airport, he called Grace's phone, but it went straight to voicemail. His heart dropped, but he wasn't deterred. He had to find her.

It had been days since Adrian left the last voicemail. Grace hadn't replied. Her phone buzzed with an incoming message—this time, it was from Adrian. Her hand shook as she opened it.

"Grace, I know I've hurt you. I've failed you in more ways than I can count. But I need you to know something—I love you, and I'll fight for us. I'm coming to you. Please, wait for me."

She closed her eyes, the tears that had been threatening to spill finally falling. She could feel her heart pulling her back to him, but fear held her back. Would she be strong enough to face him again? To let herself fall back into the love they shared, knowing how fragile it had been?

But the truth was, Grace missed him. She missed everything about their life together—the laughter, the passion, the quiet moments where nothing else mattered. The love she had for him never went away. It had just been buried under the weight of their trials.

She took a deep breath and wiped her eyes. If Adrian really comes looking for me, I won't hesitate to go back with him. She knew it was a risk. She knew it would be difficult. But deep down, she knew there was a part of her that still wanted their love to work.

Adrian spent the entire day searching for her. He asked friends, colleagues, even some of the people he knew through his business contacts. Finally, someone pointed him in the right direction—a quiet part of the city, a small street where Grace was said to be living.

His heart raced as he made his way there. Every part of him screamed with the urgency to find her, to make everything right.

When he finally reached the door of her apartment, he knocked, his hands trembling with anticipation. The door opened slowly, and there she was—Grace, standing before him, her eyes wide with surprise and something else he couldn't quite place.

They stood there for a moment, neither of them speaking. The silence between them was heavy, charged with the tension of everything they had been through.

Adrian opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out at first. All he could do was look at her, as if his gaze alone could convey everything he felt.

Grace stepped back slightly, her arms folding over her chest. "Adrian," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "What are you doing here?"

Adrian took a deep breath, his eyes never leaving hers. "I'm here because I love you, Grace. And I know I messed up, more than I ever should have. But I'm not going to let you slip away. I can't."

He paused, stepping closer, his heart pounding in his chest. "I've spent every moment since you left regretting how I handled everything. But I promise you, I'll fight for you. I'll fight for us. If you'll have me back, I will spend the rest of my life proving that I'm worthy of your love."

Grace's eyes welled up with tears as she looked at him. It was too much. Too much for her to process all at once.

"I don't know if I can trust you again," she whispered. "You broke me, Adrian. I'm not sure if I can ever be the same person I was before."

Adrian's heart sank, but he didn't back down. "I know. And I'm sorry. I'll give you the time you need, but just know this—no matter how long it takes, I will wait for you. I will wait for you forever if I have to."

Grace was quiet for a long moment, her mind racing. And then, finally, she spoke softly. "I need to think, Adrian. But I need to know you're not going to give up on us again."

"I won't," he promised, his voice thick with emotion. "I won't give up on us."

Grace closed the door gently behind her, leaving Adrian standing on the other side, his heart racing with a mixture of hope and anxiety.
