Chapter 58 - Extra 4: A traitor among us

About two weeks had passed since Dez, the Summer, and the group of heirs accompanying him arrived at H.A.L.O..

With so many people to feed and shelter, the demand for food and new accommodations increased, so everyone was working hard during the day and passing out completely when it was time to sleep.

Therefore, after midnight — when young deities and heirs would be fast asleep — the perfect opportunity arose to sneak out of their tent quietly, carrying only a discreet holographic wrist communicator, which had been transported there hidden from everyone.

Well, that's exactly what that person did, so they sneaked off to a more secluded area, hiding behind a cluster of purified bushes while attaching the technological device to their delicate wrist. There, no one would be able to see or hear what they were about to do.

Even so, the person hidden in the shadows was startled when a series of discreet vibrations shot from the device, followed by a small holographic call notification, which sprang directly from the communicator's screen and illuminated their guilty expression with a soft blue glow. When they answered the call, a familiar face, along with some pompous decorations on a black military uniform, materialized through the translucent beams of light.

— Call connected, triangulating location. Can you hear me clearly, agent? — Cold, rigid blue eyes pierced the person cowering in the dark, something like concern and fatigue crossing Commander Verber's usually neutral expression for a second. — Report. — He demanded after receiving a nod of confirmation from the other party, returning to his usual imperious tone.

— Another lesser god has recently joined us, Summer. — The individual began to report, looking away. They seemed to feel bad about providing information to E.G.O., but at the same time they had no choice but to do so... — With him, a few more heirs have also arrived.

— Continue. — The Commander ordered, sensing the other party's hesitation. The traitor, in turn, cringed at the cold order and continued his report.

— They spread the news of the refuge, and I believe we will soon have more heirs arriving. Even the other two Seasons may show up here at any moment. — The person held their breath, shivering at the rustling of the trees in the cool dawn breeze. — However, according to the evidence I have been gathering, none of these deities have fully regained their powers...

— That's all I know about H.A.L.O., I'll send a more detailed report soon. — The undercover agent concluded, straightening their posture to make their back and shoulders as straight as Commander Verber's, even though their body proportions were completely opposite.

— Right. — The man nodded, a few strands of pale blond hair moving with the motion. For about a second, his light eyebrows furrowed, and something like concern and affection flashed in his cold gaze. The empathetic expression, coupled with his physical features, made him look very similar to the traitor in the heirs' refuge, almost as if they were related... — Be careful, agent. — In the next second, those conflicting emotions disappeared and the Commander's face returned to its usual blank expression.

— Don't worry. — The person muttered, their voice a little hoarse. — This satellite wrist device will continue to transmit my location in real time, and I have already provided my coordinates.

— I will speed up the operation to invade the enemy's new base. It will be over soon. — The man commented assertively. — E.G.O. will provide all the necessary resources now that they've realized the headache that the heirs and these lesser gods can cause. Furthermore, it seems that the High Command has finally made a decision about the elimination of the Four Seasons.

— No! — The individual protested without thinking, lowering their head in shame shortly after. — Please, sir, you have to postpone the attack on H.A.L.O.

— What? — The Commander's voice sounded especially chilling, his eyes half-closed in doubt and anger. — Do you even understand what's at stake here? Who's at risk?

— Yes, I do! — The traitor replied, their voice a little louder than it should have been. Shrugging their shoulders, they quickly thought of a response that would satisfy the man in the hologram. — However, if we attack so precisely and quickly, they will begin to suspect that someone has passed information to E.G.O., and they will soon discover that I have infiltrated them. — The individual sighed, concluding: — The attack must be postponed, or the consequences for me will be disastrous...

— I'll think about it. — Commander Verber replied after a brief silent deliberation. — We've talked long enough.

The informant understood that this was the cue to end the communication, so they nodded respectfully in farewell and hung up the call.

Although he said he would only think about postponing the attack, the individual knew that the Commander would not do anything that would endanger the life of his precious source of fresh information about the enemy. Therefore, they were almost certain that the operation would be postponed.

So, that person quietly returned to their tent, as if they had gone out to use the bathroom and get some fresh air before falling asleep again. They hid the technological device where they knew no one would look for it and got under the covers, but guilt prevented them from falling asleep as quickly as they would have liked.
