Around the table, Jordan and his companions watched with stunned expressions. The director stood frozen, clearly unwilling to intervene now that Mrs. Hayes had taken an interest in the matter.

Zane observed the scene with growing fascination. A smile—small but unmistakable—curved the corners of his mouth as he watched his wife. This was the first time he had ever seen Emma being ruthless. In all the time he had known her, through business dealings and personal crises, Emma had always been the voice of compassion, the one suggesting leniency.
