Chapter 29 - Status Symbolism

I made sure to end the call with Deutralohs once everyone left. And yeah, I rested for a day. Though I'm being told I'm staying here for a week. I feel like I'm fine, though? Ah well.

"You sure you're fine with the messed up memories? I could look stuff up, and while it probably won't be a hundred percent accurate, it could still help…"

Kandance just shook her head.

"You relaying my dreams every so often is fine. It'll keep me sated until we can visit Makruuz ourselves."

Yeah, her and the Deity of Death kept talking while I was unconscious. Deutralohs knew I wasn't gonna die, and Kandance knew that the Revert skill would activate if I was going to.

They were a bit more concerned when they learned about the potential for a coma, though. Revert won't activate for that, apparently. Guess I better avoid anything that might put me in one.

But back to those two, they agreed to just let Kandance and I see the tenth Hero's soul ourselves when I'm out of the Mortal Form. Just gotta be patient.

"So I guess Revert isn't perfect, huh? Should probably check the wording to see if there's any other potential to be fucked with…"

It only works if I'm about to die, yeah? So if I'm kept away from that, then anything else can happen to me and I'll have to endure it. Not fun.

I open up the Mortal Form on the God Panel and… huh.

"That's a new skill, ain't it?"

"What? Lemme see…"

I drag Kandance to the skill list, and a new one had appeared under Return and Revert.

"Restore. Once per day, purge yourself of all harmful effects and statuses."

Didn't I use that yesterday? Back when I heard everyone calling to me and I got a sudden rush of energy?

"No wonder I feel like I can leave already…"

Also, all these skills start with a "re-" prefix. Return, Revert, Restore. Does it have meaning? Or is it just a quirky naming system?

"I'm not sure why it's here, though. New things only appear on the Mortal Form by learning them. But you just… willed the skill onto there."

"Gee, I wonder if it's because I'm God or something?"

"... Yeah, probably. I've never been in a situation like this, so I wouldn't know…"

That's definitely one thing that differentiates Kandance and I. She didn't usually take risks, and probably didn't have to experiment with all the possibilities of her powers.

Meanwhile, I'm able to discover things she never did because of unique circumstances. Which makes me wonder something, but…

"Ok, I'll just be honest with you right now: I am afraid of asking you about certain things because I don't wanna end up causing any more potential realizations of mixed up memories."

"H-huh? You really think there's more?"

How should I know?

"I only had two visits, so it could have only happened during those. And I'm pretty sure no memory nonsense happened during the first, and I still don't fully remember the second, so whatever."

"I mean, I guess. But what if you tease me with more info for your revenge?"

Yeah don't think I forgot about that.

"... Just this once, then. I'll answer any one question you have to the best of my ability."

While I could use this for any number of other questions, I have one I want to know.

"How did you know about stuff like Major and Minor Godhood if it has never happened until now?"

She mentioned that in our first argument. How she had to do what I said or be petrified forever. But if she's always been the only God, why does she know all this?

"... Of course you choose a hard one."

What can I say? I choose hard. … That sounds wrong.

"Does it have to do with there being other reincarnation systems for Earth leading to other worlds?"

I do remember that as well, and hopefully mentioning that can make it easier for her.

"Yes. It's also why I have a video for when I'm not present despite only going to Fanta Regauss twice."

I figured that played into it, too.

"No one can normally cross the space between realms, but systems can. If you are stronger than your target, you can make a system that involves them."

"Could you make a system to transport yourself?"

"No, anything as strong or stronger cannot have a system made for them."

"What defines strength? Does it take into account restrictions on yourself?"

"I said I'm only answering one question!"

"You've already answered multiple."

Don't be a hypocrite.

"Ugh, just let me finish this one question, please."

Fine, fine. I nod and let her continue.

"There's obviously beings above us. Gods of Gods, or Archgods, or Prime Gods, or whatever you feel like calling them. They never gave a name to themselves, so I just use Archgods. Point is, all Gods are targets of a system of the Archgods that can pull us in and out of our worlds into theirs."

"And then…?"

"They basically force us to learn stuff and check to see if we're not plotting anything against each other, or them, or are trying to cheat with systems."

That sounds stupid. But also, it's not like Gods can crash each other's worlds anyway, right? Eh, whatever.

"So they're the loophole police, basically. If you try to exploit the system of… systems, wow, that is a dumb name. Anyway, exploiters get punished, basically."

"It's always common for mortals to break systems of power in worlds, yeah? They all have that potential to rival and even surpass us. That's because they're not in the Archgods' system, they are in systems where stuff like that isn't being watched for. We are, and if we start trying to break things ourselves, then we risk losing everything…"

Oof. Not gonna take chances with that.

"Just one last thing. How do I know if I'm getting close to that?"

"You'll know. Aside from when you're eventually brought before them and they tell you, anyway."

I did say one last thing, but there's really one more question I have. But before I could ask it, Kandance spoke first.

"That's all I'm telling you for now. You may not need rest, but you deserve time to yourself."

And with that, she got into her bed to sleep and left me alone.

What I wanted to ask… was if there were other cases of mortals becoming Gods? You know, the potential of a mortal with the abilities of the Gods? I highly doubt I'm the only mortal to have taken up this kind of role, right?

Then again, would Kandance even know? Does she even mingle with other Gods outside of the Archgods?

And speaking of, what do they think of this? Who even are they?

… Honestly? I don't think it's important right now. I don't want it to be important right now, anyway. I pushed myself too far the first time. If I have to risk myself again, I don't know if I'll come out of it unscathed.

So I'm going to rest. And I'm going to do something more on the level of the people here, on the level of Fanta Regauss. I think it's for the best.
