Chapter 123 - Chapter 123 - Gold

After leaving Grady Memorial Hospital, Michael and the others made their way to another hospital on the western part of the city.

"Man, this place was swept clean. Good thing, we weren't here for any medicine or this trip would have been a waste." Nolan said as he came out pushing an ultrasound equipment out of the hospital entrance.

Glenn helped Nolan load up the equipment at the back of the truck and stored it alongside the things they had taken from Grady Hospital.

"We really took a lot from them, didn't we? I wonder when they'll realize that a lot of their things have gone missing?" Nolan looked amused while looking at the pile of things they had taken before and it made him wonder what Amanda and her colleagues' reaction would be when they realized what they did to them.

Glenn smiled and chuckled a little. "I guess, we'll find out when we meet them tomorrow."

While looking at the things piled up inside the cargo trailer, Glenn suddenly let out a deep sigh.

"What is it?" Nolan saw his actions as he was coming down from the trailer and asked.

Glenn turned around and also started getting down from the trailer. "Nothing really, it's just..the death of that officer keeps replaying in my head. It makes me wonder if what Michael did was right."

Nolan stared at him for a moment. He responded with a slight smile on his face. "I don't know what prompted him to do that, but I know Michael must have a reason he did that. Don't believe the excuse he told us earlier."

Looking at Glenn's troubled expression, Nolan softly chuckled. "If it helps to ease your feelings, I think that woman might not be a good person. I saw it in the eyes of those officers behind her. It was weird, but sad that they looked kind of relieved when it happened. Though there were still some who were obviously not happy with what he did in there. Also if you try to recall the events, you'd find it weird that almost all of them listened to Amanda when her rank is only that of an Officer. There were two Sergeants with them, but most of them listened to her like she was already the next leader after Dawn. It goes to show that Dawn wasn't a good leader all this while and everyone was probably just enduring it."

Glenn didn't respond and like he said, he tried recalling the events from earlier. Only to feel surprised at the end when he realized that Nolan was right. "Huh, to think they were indeed like that. I guess she was oppressing them huh?"

"Right? Also, I heard this from someone living there, but Dawn was actually turning a blind eye to a couple of the officers who were doing questionable things." Nolan whispered. His expression was like he was confessing his deepest darkest secret to Glenn.

"Like what?" Glenn became curious.

Nolan, with a grim expression, responded with the same emotion. "Mostly rape and murder. So, I guess Michael is kind of justified for killing her, right?"

Glenn sighed with a helpless and disappointed face. "If what you say is true, it sucks that the people who once swore an oath to protect the people are now doing the things they were meant to prevent, then this world has become even darker."

Suddenly, a thought occurred to him and Glenn looked at Nolan with a questionable gaze. "Hold on, you got this information from one of the survivors there? You met one of the survivors there? When and why did you not tell us?"

Nolan immediately became nervous and started scratching his cheek. He felt regret telling him those. "Uhh, well, I think it's more accurate to call him a former one of theirs?"

"What do you mean?"

"Well, he was trying to escape from there. It was during the time when the boss was handling the herd outside. So I helped him, and in exchange, he told me a lot of things about the hospital. And I think he was a doctor there too, I meant to tell you guys about him later, but I guess I just forgot about it and just remembered it now?" With every word that spilled out of his mouth, the more Nolan became uncomfortable. His voice grew smaller at the end of it.

Glenn looked at him with an amused smile on his face. "We'll discuss this later on the way back, yeah?"

"Okay."

"Come on, let's head back inside and get the rest out here."

"By the way, if he was trying to escape from there, why didn't you try to get him to join us? He's a doctor, people like him are valuable." Glenn asked as the two walked past the door and inside the hospital building.

"I tried, but he said he wants to go look for his family."

On the other hand, Glenn and Nolan didn't see that Michael had actually been listening to their conversation from on top of the cargo trailer.

Lying down on the roof of the cargo trailer, Michael thought of someone with the doctor Nolan mentioned. 'A doctor huh? Could it be that doctor that Beth unknowingly killed?'

'Hmm..I don't think it's him. It wouldn't match the timeline since that doctor was found during Season 5. I guess it must have been one of the resident doctors and had been with them since the start.'

Sitting up, Michael gazes towards the desolate surroundings.

'It would be nice if we can find a general surgeon before our attack on Woodbury.'

Sitting on top of the cargo trailer, Michael suddenly hears the sound of footsteps and the dull sound of metal hitting each other.. Turning his head to look behind him, he saw Daryl carrying two worn out duffel bags.

"Michael, come down and see what I found."

Thud!

"They look heavy. What did you find?" Michael asked before jumping down from on top of the cargo trailer with ease.

Daryl just smiled and placed the two bags down and quickly opened them up for Michael to see.

"Are those gold?"

"Yeah. I found them inside a cafe from the next block."

"And that's a lot of bullets, did the original owner of those bags rob a bank or something?"

"Beats me, I just found them lying on the floor."

Daryl responded with a shrug.
