Chapter 5 - »»——⍟——««Dedicated SCAL System Administrator

The second my thumb hovered over the gold-and-cupid icon, the universe slammed on the brakes.

The ambient noise in the house vanished instantly. The hum of the refrigerator, the distant clatter of toys, the whistle of the tea kettle—dead silence. Maria stood frozen mid-gesture, an eye roll locked permanently in place, a single drop of water suspended in mid-air near the faucet.

"What the..." I gasped, jumping out of the barstool.

A seam of blinding, iridescent light tore open through the middle of Maria's kitchen, widening into a swirling portal of gold and electric cyan.

A man stepped out of the light onto the hardwood floor. He wore a charcoal three-piece suit cut with bespoke precision, a dark silk tie, and a mischievous, dimpled smile that practically radiated high-level corporate arrogance.

"Hello, Miss Vance," he purred, adjusting his cufflinks with casual elegance. "Apologies for the temporal freeze. Standard protocol for confidential onboarding."

I backed up against the island, grabbing a heavy silver pepper mill. "Who the hell are you? And why is my best friend frozen like a statue?"

He bowed with theatrical grace. "I am Mavrik. Your assigned System Administrator."

My brain sputtered, struggling to reconcile the magical breach with his corporate-lawyer aesthetic. "My what?"

Mavrik offered a patient, polished smile—the kind high-end consultants use right before delivering terrible news. "SCAL. Sexy, Charming, Attractive, Luscious. I am here to oversee your romantic restructuring."

"You've got to be kidding me," I deadpanned, lowering the pepper mill slightly. "This is a hallucinatory stroke. I'm having an aneurysm."

"I assure you, your brain tissue is entirely pristine—and currently operating at peak youthful efficiency," Mavrik replied, stepping closer. "And I strongly advise against testing the physics of this space. It gets messy."

"Why are you in my friend's kitchen?"

He raised a finger, shaking it in a gentle reprimand. "Section Four, Paragraph Two of your user agreement. You were about to expose the proprietary interface to an unverified third party. We take data privacy very seriously."

I shot him an incredulous glare. "It's a dating app! Not nuclear launch codes!"

"It is a reality-altering emotional recalibration tool," he corrected smoothly. "We spent three centuries perfecting the algorithm. We can't have casual spectators poking around the UI."

I folded my arms over my blazer, trying to ignore how infuriatingly handsome he was. "And what, exactly, does this 'recalibration' involve? Besides turning me into a twenty-something thirst trap?"

Mavrik gasped in mock offense, placing a hand over his vest. "Thirst trap? Miss Vance, please. We deliver bespoke romantic alignment. Though I must say, the physical regression suited you exceptionally well. Our development team spent months on that acronym."

"It sounds like a rejected tagline for a trashy reality show," I shot back. "And I thought SCAL stood for Second Chance at Love."

He smirked, his dark eyes flashing with subtle magic. "That's the consumer-facing marketing name. The system backend is far more explicit in its deliverables." He did a slow, sweeping gesture with his hand, evaluating my attire. "Magnetic. Irresistible. Unapologetic."

"Ew. Don't inspect me like a newly minted sports car."

"I am merely auditing the asset," he replied, his grin widening. "And I am pleased to report a zero-defect execution."

"I want my forty-year-old life back," I said, my voice dropping into its firm, negotiation-table register. "I have a business to run. Security just threw me out of my own building."

"All in good time," Mavrik said, entirely unmoved by my executive authority. "Complete the active milestones, engage with your curated matches, and the system will proceed to its natural resolution. Break the rules, and… well, let's just say the rollback phase is far less pleasant."

"Is that a threat?"

"It's a terms-of-service warning," he replied smoothly, checking a heavy gold watch on his wrist. "My time in this temporal pocket is up. Remember, Miss Vance: no leaks, no shortcuts, and when the app pings, you respond."

The portal behind him ignited, swirling with crackling blue light.

"I'll be monitoring your metrics," Mavrik added with a crisp wink. "Try not to get arrested."

He stepped backward into the light, and the seam snapped shut with the sound of a vacuum seal breaking.

The world slammed back into motion. The kettle whistled, the refrigerator hummed, and Maria finished her eye roll, turning toward me seamlessly.

"—where's the app? You were about to show me."

I shoved my phone deep into my blazer pocket, my heart thumping a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

"You know what? It… it crashed," I lied smoothly, forcing my breathing to steady. "Server error."

Maria eyed me suspiciously, but before she could cross-examine me, a blood-curdling scream echoed from the playroom as Junior dropped a toy on his toe. She winced, shooting me an apologetic look. "Duty calls. We are not done with this conversation, Miss Benjamin Button."

Twenty minutes later, I sat in my parked Porsche three blocks away, staring blindly through the windshield. The quiet neighborhood street felt completely detached from the surreal nightmare spinning inside my head.

I glanced up at the rearview mirror. Smooth forehead. Dewy skin. Zero lines around my mouth. A face every woman in my demographic spent thousands trying to emulate, yet it felt like a costume stolen from a stranger.

My phone chimed from the passenger seat. I reached for it, the screen displaying a sleek, glowing push notification:

[SCAL SYSTEM]: Your romantic recalibration has officially commenced. Target match sequence loading... Prepare for deployment.

I stared at the glowing text, a bitter, sarcastic laugh scraping past my throat.

"Prepare for deployment," I whispered to the empty car. "Right. Because my love life was clearly just a tactical military operation waiting for better gear."

I tossed the phone onto the leather seat, leaning my head against the wheel. I was twenty-something, locked out of my own company, monitored by a supernatural executive, and about to be force-fed curated romance by an algorithm.

The universe had given me a second chance. Now I just had to survive it.
