"A revenant," he said finally. "A vampire that refused to die… because his vengeance was too strong."
"Then what's the Emerald?"
Lucian looked at her. "You're not ready for that answer."
"Try me."
Silence.
Then he turned and began to walk.
She followed.
They ended up in a clearing deeper in the woods, far from where the rest of the camp could hear. Lucian stopped at a stone marker half-covered in moss. A grave.
He knelt beside it and brushed off the name:
Eira Everhart.
Selis's breath caught.
"My mother," she whispered.
"She was the Emerald," Lucian said quietly.
Selis staggered back, nearly falling.
"No," she breathed. "That's not—she was a medic. A war healer."
"She was more than that," Lucian said. "She carried the blood of vampires in her veins. She was the key to ending the last war. And she gave herself up to stop it."
Selis sank to her knees.
