Chapter 14 - Chapter 13 – Is That a Sideways Winky Face?

Amelie's POV

When I arrived at work on Wednesday, I went straight to my office. There was a huge bouquet of lilies on my desk. I reached for the card in the bouquet and opened it.

Amelie,

We are so lucky to have you join our team. Here's to the start of a new beginning.

Nathan

I sit down in my chair and hug the card. That's so thoughtful of him. I dropped my hands to my lap and sighed.

I started my computer and signed in to everything Samuel showed me yesterday.

I found several emails from both Samuel and Nathan with some research duties and general work documentation.

I shiver and look up to see Nathan standing in the doorway. He's leaning casually on the door frame with his hands in his pockets. How long has he been standing there? When I notice him, a big smile overtakes his face.

"Good Afternoon, Amelie," he said, "I just wanted to welcome you to Michaels Investment Group personally."

"Nathan," I said, feeling flush, "thank you so much for the beautiful flowers. Lilies are my favorite. How did you know?"

"Just a hunch, you wear lily-scented perfume," he stated.

My inner self is acting like a 14-year-old girl and squealing. He smelled my perfume and remembered it.

Nathan announced, "Samuel and I are leaving in about half an hour to fly to Seattle for some meetings. We are trying to acquire a couple of investment firms out west. I think you have enough to keep you busy for today; if you need help, I mean anything at all, text Samuel or me."

"Sounds good, Nathan," I confirmed.

"Amelie, I mean anything. Text or phone me," he added.

"Ok, Nathan, have a safe trip," I said, smiling.

Nathan turns and leaves my doorway. I almost felt like crying from a sense of separation anxiety. How did this man have such an effect on me?

For the rest of the day, I worked through the emails that were sent to me. I was zoned in and managed to get through everything. I finished work that day, moping around the quiet 42nd floor. It felt so empty up here without Nathan or Samuel. I quietly packed up my messenger bag and headed towards the elevators.

Samira stopped me as I was leaving. "Hi Amelie, I haven't seen you all day."

"I was just working on a couple of things in my office, keeping busy," I smiled.

"That's a great work effort and attitude," Samira stated. "You know, you should probably check in with Nathan later."

"You think so?"

"Absolutely! He'd probably want to know how your day went. He's a very hands-on boss," she smirked. "Oh, a word to the wise: stay away from Alfred at all costs. He's the slimiest man you'll ever meet in your life."

"I will, Samira," I smiled.

"Oh, by the way. Nathan has Marcus waiting downstairs to take you home."

I was taken aback. "Thanks, Samira, have a good evening."

"You too, Amelie," Samira responded.

I met Marcus downstairs in the parkade. He smiled broadly and ushered me into the car. Inside, there is a bag of food.

"Dr. Michaels ordered you dinner. I hope you like Pho," Marcus said.

I blushed at Nathan thinking of me. "Thank you, Marcus. I love Pho."

We drive the rest of the way in silence. After Marcus drops me off and walks me to the door (Nathan's orders, as he says), I change into my pajamas and robe.

I settle on the couch with my bowl of Pho and dig in. It's one of the most delicious things I've ever tasted. I quickly called Zander to see how he was doing and found out he was playing cards with another patient. I'm glad he has someone to help him occupy his time on my workdays. I'm just exhausted from working a shift at the coffee shop, attending university, and then working at Michaels Investment Group so that I couldn't make visiting hours at the hospital.

I finish my Pho and pick up my phone. Should I text Nathan? I should thank him for dinner and catch him up on my day at the office.

Amelie: Hi, Nathan. Are you busy?

Nathan: Amelie, I didn't expect to hear from you.

Amelie, I just wanted to thank you for dinner. It was awfully kind of you.

Nathan: Just looking after my employee. I don't want you starving. Lol

Amelie: I know how to cook, you know…

Nathan: Yes, but you're probably so tired you wouldn't.

Amelie: Yeah, you're right. I was going to eat crackers and cheese.

Nathan: I knew it…lol.

Amelie: So, how did the flight go?

Nathan: The flight went well. I wish you could have joined us, but I know you have work and school.

Amelie: I would have loved that! I've never been on an airplane before.

Nathan: Really?

Amelie: Yes, we always made road trips before, well, you know…

Nathan: I'm sorry, Amelie. Well, I guess I need to make your first flight memorable.

Amelie: That would be so exciting!

Nathan: How was work?

Amelie: It was busy. I finished all the documents you left for me to process.

Nathan: Wow, that was 2 days of work. I'm impressed.

Amelie: Well, you know I aim to please.

Nathan: I'm sure you do ;)

Did the next CEO of Michaels Investment Group just sideways winky face me? I shriek with excitement.

Amelie: Anyway, I should let you get back to doing what you were doing.

Nathan: Yes, my hot date with Samuel was interrupted. Ha.

Amelie: Tell Samuel I'm sorry. Lol

Nathan: Well, he is heartbroken.

Amelie: You'd better order him dessert. lol

Nathan: I'll get on that.

Amelie: Bye, Nathan

Nathan: Sweet dreams, Amelie

I sit and hug my phone. Sweet dreams? Only if you're in them, Nathan, I think to myself.
