Pain greeted Lyra when she opened her eyes.
Dust filled her lungs. Her ears rang.
"Sarah?"
A groan answered from several feet away.
Lyra crawled over broken stones and found Sarah pinned beneath a beam.
"Don't move."
"I wasn't planning to dance."
Despite everything, relief made Lyra laugh once.
She pushed against the beam. It did not move.
Her wolf surged forward.
Silver light spread across her hands.
"Lyra," Sarah warned. "Your veins."
Black lines appeared beneath her skin.
"I can control it."
"You said that before you nearly burned the training ground."
"I said I was learning."
"That is not comforting."
Lyra gritted her teeth and lifted.
The beam rose long enough for Sarah to pull free. The silver light vanished, but one black vein remained near Lyra's wrist before sinking beneath her skin.
Above them, muffled shouts echoed through the ruins.
"Kael?" Sarah asked.
"I still cannot reach him."
The bond felt distant, wrapped in something cold.
