Chapter 18 - 04 Fright Night 3

Danny

Danny watched fearfully as the giant spider spun Mr. Lancer into a cobweb. It happened so fast, the clipboard was wrapped up with him. Only his head was free.

Calmly, Mr. Lancer said, "This has potential. Sticky, gross. I like it."

Sam stood next to Danny and spoke quietly so Mr. Lancer didn't hear. "Danny, You might want to end this before things spin out of control!"

Danny smiled at her. "I will, as soon as Lancer declares me the winner!"

The spider roared in Mr. Lancer's face, saliva dripping from its fangs. Mr. Lancer narrowed his eyes.

"Okay, I'm mildly impressed," he said. "A few more surprises and you might have this thing wrapped up."

"Yes!" Danny said. He put his fists on his hips. "I'll take 'mildly impressed.' That's my cue to clean up!" He picked up the Fenton Foamer that his parents left behind and shot the green substance at the spider. The spider reverted back to a purple plastic toy and landed on the ground with a squeak.

Sam wrestled with the door. Skeletons tried to push their way in. Danny tossed the Foamer at her. She caught it, but the skeletons burst in, knocking her down. They moved toward her, arms raised menacingly. She smiled and pulled the trigger. The foam turned them back into dolls from Dash's haunted room.

"See?" Danny said as she walked up to him. He crossed his arms triumphantly. "I told ya I had everything under control. We've got the Fenton Foamer to keep Lancer safe. And as soon as he says, 'Danny wins,' I'll toss the sword back into the Ghost Zone."

While he spoke, a giant rat growled at Lancer. Danny took the Fenton Foamer from Sam and zapped the rat. It turned into a chair.

Crash!

A black horse broke through the ceiling. The Fright Knight! And was that… Tucker with him? Yup. Tucker lay across the horse's back in front of the Fright Knight. He looked terrified.

"Hmm," Mr. Lancer mused. "That's one fancy flaming robot."

"Danny," Tucker cried, "whatever you do, don't let him get the sword!"

"Silence, whelp!" the Fright Knight commanded. He threw Tucker across the room, where he stuck to the web still holding Mr. Lancer.

"Hi. Come here often?" Tucker joked.

"Tuck!" Danny yelled, and aimed the Fenton Foamer.

The Fright Knight destroyed the Foamer with a purple eye-beam.

With his weapon gone, Danny looked at the only other weapon in the room: the Soul Shredder. The Fright Knight saw what Danny was looking at.

"My sword!" the Fright Knight said. "At last!"

He lunged off his horse for the sword. Danny rushed to intercept. They both grabbed the hilt, Danny one second sooner.

"Ha!" Danny said.

The Fright Knight easily picked up the sword even with Danny still holding on. The Fright Knight swung the sword to try and remove Danny, but Danny's grip held strong.

To Danny's surprise, Mr. Lancer said, "That's certainly exciting, but is it scary?"

Danny and the Fright Knight's fight moved across the room, and the sword slashed through Mr. Lancer, who disappeared.

"Lancer?" Danny wondered. "Where'd he go?"

Mr. Lancer

"Yes, it's scary," Mr. Lancer said. "It's very scary."

He stood on a floating platform in a black void. Surrounding him were chalkboards with math problems. A pi symbol reached out and grabbed his wrist. He screamed. His fingernails raked against the chalkboard, producing the most heinous screech.

"Too scary! Ohh!"

Danny

Danny let go of the sword and held up the webbing that used to contain Mr. Lancer. He said, "Mr. Lancer?" He turned to the Fright Knight. "What did you do to him?"

The Fright Knight said, "I sent him to where all who feel the sting of my blade are sent, a dimension where his worst fears come to life."

Danny tossed the empty webbing in joy. "Yes! This contest is so mine!" Sam glared at him. "Uh, I mean, bring him back, you fiend!"

He ran at the Fright Knight, transforming into a ghost on the way. He jumped in the air to deliver a kick, but the Fright Knight backhanded him into the wall.

"Listen to the sound of your doom," the Fright Knight said as lightning crackled around. "Soon, my storm shall consume this planet. The world will be forever transformed, and no one can stop me!"

"Not if I can help it," Danny promised. He flew at the Fright Knight but was knocked back by his armor. "Which apparently, I can't."

The Fright Knight brandished his sword, ready to slice through Danny.

"Danny, look out!" Tucker shouted, free of the web. He ran to stand between Danny and the Fright Knight and got slashed through instead.

"Tucker, no!"

Tucker

He was on a small island, but held of his favorite electronics. A TV and boombox rested at his feet. He smiled, but then all of the tech vanished.

"No phones, no games, no PDAs" — his clothes disappeared except for his underwear — "and no clothes?! All my technology useless."

Tucker cowered from a flash of green light. When it was gone, he saw a giant pad of paper and equally sized pencil.

"Noooo!"

Danny

Brute force did nothing against the Fright Knight, so Danny shot an ectoblast. The Fright Knight used his sword like a bat and sent the ectoblast right back. The ectoblast hit Danny in the chest, hurtling him into the wall again.

"Doesn't anything work on this guy?" Danny asked.

"There must be something in this book that tells us how to beat him," Sam said, flipping through pages.

The Fright Knight loomed over her. "Perhaps, but you will never find it!"

"Sam, look out!" Danny said, and turned her and himself intangible. But not the book. The Soul Shredder destroyed the book, cutting it in half. Danny flew invisibly with Sam away from the Fright Knight.

"Darn it!" Sam said.

Danny and Sam landed behind the fake throne.

"I'm so sorry," he said. "I wanted to win so bad, but not this bad."

"Stop beating yourself up over it," Sam said, "and start beating him. It's the only way we'll be able to get Tucker and Lancer back safe and get everything back to normal."

Sam looked among the scattered pages, and Danny flew toward the Fright Knight, who was looking the other way. Before Danny could do anything, the Fright Knight turned around and hit Danny across the room.

"Come on," Sam said, "show me a weakness, a vulnerability, anything. Aha!" She held up a paper and read off the words. "'To cease the storm, to end the fear, the sword must sheathe in pumpkin near.' Pumpkin near! Danny, you've got to put the sword back in a pumpkin."

Danny held a grandfather clock, ready to hit the Fright Knight. "A pumpkin? There are no pumpkins in the room." The Fright Knight approached, and Danny launched the clock. "No pumpkins in the room? It's Halloween. What am I, an idiot?"

Sam waved the page around and pointed at it. "You have to find another pumpkin fast. That's the only thing that can stop the sword's power."

Danny looked around the room. They were in luck! Tucker's candy bucket was on a table in the corner, and it was shaped like a pumpkin.

The Fright Knight stood out of the rubble of the grandfather clock. He jumped in the air, grabbed Danny, and flew through the hold in the ceiling. Danny struggled and broke free. The green storm raged all around them.

Swiping and slashing his sword, the Fright Knight tried to attack Danny, but Danny dodged every hit.

"Strike six!" Danny said. "Way to wiff, Mr. October!"

He fired off an ectobeam, forcing the Fright Knight back into the haunted house. The Fright Knight crashed into a dining table, allowing Danny time to attack.

"Come on, Danny," Sam said. "You can do it."

Danny and the Fright Knight exchanged blows until Danny landed on the ground. The Fright Knight raised his sword. Danny acted fast. He reached up and caught the sword between his palms. He felt the sword's magic working on him, and he pushed it back with his ghost power. He felt stronger than normal, almost like he was in the Ghost Zone.

"'To cease the storm,'" Danny recited, "'to end the fear, the sword must sheathe in pumpkin near'!"

The Fright Knight tried forcing the blade, but Danny finally had the upper hand. His whole body glowed brighter, reflecting the ghostly energy he expended. With both hands, he grabbed the hilt and forced the Fright Knight to the ground.

"Hyah!"

Danny leapt toward the candy bucket and plunged the sword in. White light flashed that turned into another green column. Danny was shocked backward.

"What?" the Fright Knight asked.

Danny landed next to him and said, "Trick and treat, bucket-head. Told ya I'd have it back by midnight."

"No. No! NO!" the Fright Knight screamed. He tried grabbing the sword, but it shocked him too, throwing him back.

The storm stopped and then swirled in the opposite direction. The roof tore off completely, and the Fright Knight's horse got pulled in.

"It's sucking everything into the Ghost Zone," Sam said, her hair floating in the upward draft. "It's working! Aah!"

"Sam!" Danny said, grabbing her arm. She had started drifting up with everything else. Danny pulled her down, a protective arm around her shoulders. With his other hand, he turned it intangible just enough so he could grab a pipe in the floorboard.

The Fright Knight vowed, "I will have my vengeance. Mark my words!" He, too, was sucked into the vortex, and the storm died down.

The sword in the pumpkin disappeared, and Tucker reappeared. Tucker immediately reached for his PDA in his pocket.

"Yes!" he said. "Sweet, beautiful technology, you're mine once again!" And he hugged his PDA.

Lancer appeared, his back to Danny, who quickly transformed into his human self. Mr. Lancer whipped his head around and turned, glaring at Danny.

"Mr. Fenton, I have to say that was the most terrifying thing I have ever seen." Danny blinked, unsure of what that meant. Then Mr. Lancer's whole demeanor changed. "You win!"

"Ha ha! Yes!" Danny cheered.

Mr. Lancer turned around again. "Take that, Tetslaff!"
