"So you mean I'm not allowed to go to work?" I asked again, my voice caught between disbelief and irritation.
I needed him to repeat it because the first time he'd said it, it had sounded like some overprotective joke.
But Alaric wasn't joking he never joked about anything when it came to my safety.
My job wasn't just work for me, it was routine, stability… the one place where my life still felt like mine.
And now he'd gone and ripped that away without even asking.
What stunned me most was that he'd already handled it behind my back.
A whole month. He'd actually arranged a month-long leave of absence for me, and I had no idea what he'd told my boss.
The hospital didn't just hand out that kind of time off like candy, especially not to surgical nurses.
I had no clue what lies he'd spun or who he'd intimidated into making it happen but knowing him, it could have been either.
