Chapter 38 - Chapter 38: Degeneration

The interrogation began. The person who went in to question her was not Sasha but another officer; she was only there to observe.

The officer didn't immediately jump to the topic of the Doom Cult but instead wanted to ask about Toriel's past, from before she joined the Doom Cult.

Beautiful, talented, and charming—these words described Toriel. With a well-off family, a stable job, and an outstanding boyfriend in both looks and career, Toriel's life was truly a dream for many. But the doom invasion changed the fate of too many people, and Toriel was no exception.

The first time she tasted betrayal was when the person she trusted most pushed her into hell. The boyfriend who had always treated her well finally revealed his true colors, abandoning Toriel to a group of thugs.

The early years of the invasion were truly tragic, almost becoming an apocalypse. The fate of a woman like Toriel, who had a good appearance but no support, when she fell into the hands of a group of bandits, was self-evident.

After being a "tool" for them for nearly a month, she finally managed to escape, battered and bruised. It was at that moment that Toriel's psyche began to twist.

During her journey, Toriel was saved many times by good people. But she quickly realized that those people didn't live long. She personally witnessed the family that had taken her in become ghosts under the guns of a group of bandits. The husband, the wife, and two children fell in a pool of blood right in front of her. In the end, only Toriel remained, her fear of death overpowering the pain in her body. She finally accepted crawling like a dog to beg for her life.

This didn't happen just once, but many times. The more good people fell, the more the thing called kindness within her was worn away. Toriel finally realized that kindness was a useless thing; it couldn't help her survive.

From then on, she began to use her body as a "commodity." She climbed from one person to another, all of whom were malicious and perverted, because only those people could survive well in this chaotic world. Toriel's psyche became more and more unstable. The breaking point was when a ragged child begged her for some food.

She didn't help the child; she didn't ignore them. Toriel dragged the child into a dark alley and beat them to death. There was no sense of guilt, only a feeling of extreme pleasure. Her body had already been severely ravaged, and only spiritual satisfaction could make her feel like she was still alive.

From then on, it was just endless killing. One second she could be talking affectionately, and the next, she could immediately use a rope to strangle the other person.

She found the thugs and bullies from before one by one and used various methods to make them fight each other or killed them directly. But she shouldn't be considered a good person. Her treatment of good people was even more terrifying.

She used countless tricks to divide, create conflict, gradually force, and bewitch, dragging each person into the abyss.

It wasn't until the situation gradually stabilized and the plan to build the front line was implemented that she had fewer opportunities to act. When the Doom Cult appeared, she immediately joined, and step by step, climbed to her current position as the bishop's personal attendant.

Following that, Toriel sequentially recounted the crimes she had committed. The more the interrogating officer listened, the more sweat dripped from his head, and the veins on the back of his hand bulged. This person had been a member of the intelligence agency since before the apocalypse. He had come into contact with many different cases and types of criminals. But very few criminals could make the officer so angry.

Sasha, who was beside him, frowned, showing her discomfort. Even though she had excellent control over her body's cells, she couldn't help but get goosebumps.

Toriel almost never got her hands dirty with any of the crimes. But the level of barbarism and pain in these things meant that even if Toriel died a hundred times, it wouldn't be enough to atone for what she had caused.

Toriel was a person with a tragic past; that was not wrong. But no one could sympathize with what she had done.

She even recounted those things as her achievements. The interrogating officer finally couldn't listen anymore. He slammed his hand on the table.

"Ms. Toriel, let's talk about the main issue."

Toriel pouted, looking bored. But she truthfully revealed all the Doom Cult strongholds in Orna city. As for Rorgh city, she didn't know much since it wasn't her area of responsibility. The bishop had three close associates, each in charge of a different area, and they didn't interfere with each other. Only the bishop held all the power.

Regarding the bishop, Toriel revealed that although she had been a follower for a long time, the bishop was still very mysterious and had never even shown their face. However, Sasha detected that when Toriel talked about the bishop, her heart had a very slight fluctuation. This was something that even with a heart rate monitor, it would be difficult to sense. Only a modified human with their senses enhanced to a super-sensitive level could catch it.

She was lying.

But Sasha didn't expose her. There was still a lot of time, and this wasn't the only interrogation.

The officer left, leaving Sasha and Toriel in the room. Toriel smiled faintly, even leisurely taunting Sasha.

"I cooperated so well, didn't I? So, when are you going to let me go?"

Sasha just stood there, not responding, not being cold, but her eyes were looking directly into Toriel's eyes.

"When people go through the worst things, the most horrible hell, even a good person will be corrupted. That's what you think, isn't it? But... he chose a different path."

Although "he" wasn't mentioned, both of them knew who it was. Toriel fell silent. Sasha left the room.

She could never forget that scene. When he held the baby's corpse and cried without making a sound, his eyes seemed to have lost all color, becoming murky and dull.

Sasha didn't know much about Noid's past. Although they had talked many times, she had only heard him vaguely mention his parents' deaths because they saved him. The suffering that tormented Noid was definitely not just from one or two days, or just from Jack's death. It had been building up for a very long time, and Jack's death was just the fuse that made his suffering erupt.

Fortunately, he finally came out of the darkness, transforming into a strong and reliable person.

After confirming the information, the police and military began to sweep the Doom Cult's strongholds in Orna city. But it seemed the followers had caught wind of it and had already scattered. No followers were found. Instead, the police and military found a large pile of dooms in the underground structures.

Fortunately, the police were not acting alone; the military was also there. They were more skilled at dealing with dooms. Because of this, no one died, and only a few soldiers were slightly injured. The entire Orna city was cleaned up. The bishop's whereabouts were unknown.
