The colorful plate of fresh salmon sushi gleamed in front of Naruto. The smell of seasoned rice filled the cozy environment.
But Naruto didn't move.
His hands, small and calloused from playing alone in the dirt, trembled slightly under the wooden counter. He looked at the food, but his traumatized mind saw something else.
Cartons of sour milk. Wilted, almost rotten vegetables that the village merchants sold him for triple the price. The agonizing stomachaches that kept him awake at dawn, sweating cold in the dark of his empty apartment.
For the boy who carried the Nine-Tailed Fox, kindness always came with a price. Whenever someone offered him something "for free," it was a trap. A cruel prank to humiliate him or to laugh at his face while he got sick. He lowered his head, his shoulders hunched, waiting for the invisible blow.
Matsuri, who was sitting next to him finishing his meal with his mask pulled down to his chin, stopped his chopsticks. He noticed the blonde's heavy breathing and the posture of someone preparing to be beaten.
"What's the matter, Naruto?" Matsuri asked, his voice calm and completely devoid of pity. "Why aren't you eating? If it's not to your liking, be honest. We can go to Ichiraku to eat ramen, if you prefer."
The casual gentleness of that sentence was the trigger.
Naruto squeezed his eyes shut, and thick tears began to fall, dripping heavily onto the polished wooden counter.
"No... it's not that," Naruto sobbed, his voice choked, dramatic, and filled with a deep fear that a child should never feel. "I'm just... I'm just scared."
The blonde boy rubbed his eyes frantically, but the crying wouldn't stop. The dam had broken.
"Whenever they give me something, it's spoiled. People look at me with disgust, they charge me more for expired food... I just wanted to eat something clean, something that wouldn't make me double over in pain later!" Naruto vented, his voice cracking. "I-I have my allowance money, I swear I can pay!"
He reached a trembling hand into the pocket of his orange jacket and placed a few crumpled coins on the counter.
Mebuki and Kizashi, who were cleaning utensils on the other side of the counter, stopped instantly. Mebuki covered her mouth with her hand, her eyes tearing up at the sight of the pathetic amount of money on the wood.
Kizashi frowned. A protective anger, rarely seen in such a peaceful man, boiled in his chest. How could the entire village leave an orphan to live in such miserable conditions? The amount wasn't even enough to buy fresh bread for a week.
Kizashi sighed heavily, untied his cook's bandana, and placed his large, warm hand on Naruto's trembling shoulder.
"Keep your coins, kid," Kizashi said, his voice deep, yet overflowing with warmth and firmness. "In this establishment, in our home, or in our presence, you will never be treated like that again. That is a promise."
Matsuri swallowed the last piece of his fish and pulled his dark mask back up to cover his face. He turned to the crying blonde and pointed to the center wall of the restaurant.
A long banner hung there, bearing the classic white circle of the Haruno clan.
"Can you read what is written down there, Naruto?" Matsuri asked, his voice sounding imposing.
Naruto sniffled, wiped his tears with his jacket sleeve, and squinted at the letters drawn on the banner.
"A-As High as Honor?" he read, stuttering slightly. "What does that mean, Matsuri?"
"That is the motto of our house," Matsuri explained. As someone who carried memories of another world, he knew the weight of those words. "Most people in this village think that honor comes from famous bloodlines, from Dojutsus, or from powerful clans. But they are wrong."
Matsuri looked directly into Naruto's blue eyes.
"Honor is having an unshakeable word. It's doing what is right even when the whole world turns its back on you. It means that, no matter how difficult the situation gets, our principles will always be at the highest point. We do not lie to the weak, and we do not back down to the strong."
Matsuri tilted his head slightly, adding a piece of wisdom that would guide the foundations of that friendship.
"Honor is measured by your attitudes. Let your actions speak and prove whether you are honorable or not. We take responsibility for our actions, Naruto. If we say you are our guest and that this food is clean and fresh... then that is the absolute truth."
Silence took over the restaurant for a few seconds. Naruto looked at Kizashi, who was smiling at him. He looked at Mebuki, who was wiping a tear from her face. And he looked at Matsuri, whose dark eyes above the mask showed no pity, only respect.
The knot in Naruto's throat finally unraveled.
With his hands still trembling, he picked up a piece of salmon sushi and put it in his mouth. He chewed slowly.
The taste of the fresh melting fish, the perfectly seasoned rice... It was indescribable. There was no sour taste. There was no pain, no traps. There was only real food, made with care.
"This... this is amazing!" Naruto shouted suddenly, with his mouth full. Fresh tears fell from his eyes, but this time, they were of pure, genuine joy. "It's the best thing I've ever eaten! I want more! Please, Uncle Kizashi!"
"Hahaha! That's the spirit, kid!" Kizashi laughed out loud, the tension vanishing from the room. "Eat as much as you want! Today's stock is all yours!"
While Naruto devoured plate after plate, laughing and talking with the family, something much bigger than a simple meal was happening there. At that counter, an unbreakable loyalty was being forged.
And they weren't the only ones who knew it.
Far away, in the silence of the Hokage's office, Hiruzen Sarutobi let his pipe slip slightly from his lips. He watched the scene through his crystal ball, but there was no relief or gratitude on his aged face. There was shock. Fear. And a crushing guilt.
He had been so drowned in the village's politics, in the machinations of power, and the endless bureaucracy, that he had been blind to what was happening right under his nose. How could the son of Konoha's hero, the boy who was supposed to be Minato's legacy, be living such a miserable and lonely life?
Hiruzen had never tacitly ordered such treatment. He knew very well that Danzo had a huge share of the blame in this, spreading poisonous rumors in the shadows and restricting the boy with random orders to isolate him and, perhaps in the future, mold him into a tool for Root.
But the omission... the omission to protect him from the hatred of the civilians was entirely the Third Hokage's fault. Seeing a small, ordinary family show more humanity and integrity than he himself did made Hiruzen's stomach churn with shame.
At the same time, outside the restaurant, hidden in the shadows of the neighboring roof, a masked Anbu slowly lowered the cover of his Icha Icha book.
Kakashi Hatake focused his single visible eye on the Haruno family through the glass window.
"As High as Honor...", Kakashi murmured to himself.
Those words struck deep into his soul, unearthing memories of a time that felt so distant. The motto, Matsuri's explanation about attitudes... all of it reminded him of his father, Sakumo Hatake. Konoha's White Fang was a man of integrity, who followed the path and principles of the samurai.
A quick flashback, like a stab to the chest, crossed the Anbu Captain's mind. He saw himself, still a little boy holding his small sword, sitting on the porch of his home. Beside him, the imposing yet gentle figure of his father looked toward the horizon.
"Remember, Kakashi," Sakumo's voice echoed in his memory. "The rules dictate how a ninja should operate, but true honor lies in protecting those by your side. Those who break the rules are scum, yes... but those who abandon their friends are worse than scum. Your actions will always reveal who you truly are, no matter what the village says."
Sakumo had proven his honor through his actions and choices, and the village had destroyed him for it.
Seeing that pink-haired boy, wearing a mask identical to his own and carrying a wooden sword carved in the image of his father's, uttering words that resonated exactly with Sakumo's teachings... made Kakashi's breath hitch for a second.
That eccentric kid and his civilian family had demonstrated more of the true essence of Konoha in a single night than many shinobis had done in a lifetime.
Kakashi leaned against the cold roof tiles, looking up at the stars. He would, definitely, continue to pay close attention to Matsuri Haruno.
