With the free time he finally got, Regal stared at his status window, something he had been doing more frequently since Superman's release ten days ago.
But his attention kept drifting to that one skill slot.

[Slot-5:] Actor (Rank – Master)
•--•
"So... I try my hand at acting?"
"Dude, you want to steal our jobs now?"
Regal turned to find Keanu leaning against his office doorway, having let himself in as he often did.
The actor was in casual motorcycle gear, helmet tucked under one arm, clearly having just arrived.
Before Regal could respond, Seren appeared behind Keanu, followed by Gwendolyn. Apparently this was becoming an impromptu gathering.
"You speak as if he can even act." Seren said, moving past Keanu to flop onto the office couch.
"Yeah..." Gwendolyn nodded, settling beside her.
Keanu shook his head, walking in and closing the door. "You both say that because you didn't watch him act."
That got everyone's attention.
Seren had spent plenty of time on set as the lead costume designer, but her attention was always on fittings, textures, continuity, and also she was usually gone between takes.
She had seen pieces of Regal's enacting a few times for the actors, but never the whole thing.
Gwendolyn had dropped by sets often too, but 'dropped by' was exactly that. She hadn't stayed long enough to watch him work.
Seren frowned. "Wait… is he actually good?"
There was real disbelief there. Her sibling pride was only recently getting used to her twin brother being an absurdly capable director and writer. Acting on top of that felt excessive.
"Good?" Keanu set his helmet on Regal's desk. "That's underselling it–
"I haven't seen him act recently but I can tell he is better than the last time I did. And... honestly, it's kind of annoying."
Regal felt oddly exposed, like Keanu had revealed something he had been keeping private.
"Why are you guys suddenly debating my acting skills?" He tried to redirect. "I was just thinking out loud. Since I decided to take a small break from directing a film for now..."
"So...?" Keanu prompted.
"I was thinking of picking up a hobby."
The room went silent.
Then Keanu actually laughed - a genuine, slightly incredulous sound. "You know what? Don't ever say that to someone else. Especially someone who wants to be an actor. You are seriously getting under my nerves."
"Also." Gwendolyn added. "How in the world is acting a hobby?"
"Yeah." Seren agreed. "Can't you come up with something more like a... useless hobby?"
"I still haven't made a decision yet." Regal said, feeling defensive now. "So don't stitch it into something I am definitely doing."
A knock interrupted the conversation.
Samantha opened the door, looking slightly apologetic and also somewhat amused.
"I am sorry to interrupt, but there are two people here who would like to meet you. They don't have an appointment." She paused, choosing her words carefully. "And apparently... they have been trying to see you for quite some time now."
Regal frowned. "How long?"
"According to Rock - who, by the way, is currently outside preventing security from escorting them out again, they have been showing up at the LIE Studio office almost weekly for the past two months."
"Two months?" Seren said. "And nobody told him?"
"They didn't make it past reception before." Samantha looked genuinely apologetic now. "Rock only mentioned it today because he felt bad watching them get turned away again, at least that's what I presume to be. Said they seemed genuinely determined rather than crazy."
"What do they want?" Regal asked.
"To meet with you. But if that's not possible, they left this." Samantha handed him a folded piece of paper. "They asked that it at least be passed along."
Regal unfolded the slip and read it.
Then he laughed - a genuine, surprised sound that startled everyone in the room.
Keanu immediately reached over and snatched the and read it only to start laughing too.
Seren took it next, skimming the contents with her typical analytical expression. No reaction except a slight eyebrow raise.
Gwendolyn was last. She read it carefully, then looked up at Regal with an amused smile.
"This kind of reminds me of you." she said.
"Hey, I wasn't this arrogant."
"Believe me, you were." Gwendolyn handed the slip back. "You absolutely were."
Regal looked at the paper again, rereading the words that had made him laugh:
….
Dear Mr. Seraphsail,
We have been trying to reach you for two months. Your security is very good - almost as good as our persistence.
We have a television show. Not just any show, the BEST television show you have never heard of yet. It's about six friends in New York City trying to navigate their twenties and thirties while being hilariously dysfunctional. It's funny, quirky, heartfelt, and we're absolutely certain it will change television comedy forever.
The problem: Nobody wants to invest in it.
We've pitched to every network. They all say the same thing: "Where's the hook? Where's the gimmick? It's just people talking in apartments."
Yes. That's exactly what it is. And that's why it's brilliant.
We're hoping you can help us convince someone that six friends drinking coffee and dealing with relationship drama is worth watching.
If you're willing to meet - great. If not, at least you got to read the best pitch letter you'll receive all year.
Sincerely,Two Very Persistent Writers Who Refuse to Give Up(Marta Kauffman & David Crane)
….
Six friends? Marta Kauffman & David Crane?
Ignoring the provocative letter, Regal was bought into their confidence.
Still, for others it felt like a waste of time - especially because it felt gimmicky because Regal's promise of confidence was already a well known story within Hollywood, and is not rare to see people copy that approach to grab the attention.
So they were prepared for rejection, only to be taken aback–
Regal said. "Bring them in."
"Really?"
"Really. Anyone who is persistent enough to show up for two months and confident enough to write a pitch letter like this deserves at least a conversation."
Samantha left, and Keanu handed the slip back to Regal. "They have nerves, I will give them that."
Regal corrected. "That nerve comes from believing in what you've created. Though it might just turn out to be arrogance without substance."
"And you can tell which this is from one letter?"
"No. But I can tell it's worth finding out."
Seren was already standing, preparing to leave. "Should we go? Give you privacy for the meeting?"
"Stay." Regal said. "You're already here, and this might be interesting."
A moment later, Samantha returned, followed by two people.
A woman was in her late thirties, dark hair pulled back. And a man of similar age, wearing glasses and a blazer.
They both froze when they entered and saw not just Regal, but Keanu Reeves, and three other people casually occupying the office.
"I—" The woman started, then stopped. "We didn't realize you were in a meeting."
"You are not interrupting." Regal said, gesturing to the two empty chairs near his desk. "Please, sit. I am Regal, this is Keanu, that's my sister Seren, and that's Gwendolyn. Consider them my impromptu focus group."
The woman and man exchanged glances, then sat down somewhat hesitantly.
"I am Marta Kauffman." the woman said. "This is David Crane. We're—"
Regal finished, holding up their letter. "I read your pitch. Well, your pitch-letter. I am assuming the actual pitch is more detailed?"
"Much more." David confirmed. "Though honestly, the letter captured the essence pretty well."
"Tell me about the show." Regal said, leaning back in his chair.
Marta and David looked at each other again, and something passed between them - the unspoken communication of creative partners who had worked together long enough to think in sync.
Marta spoke first. "It's called Friends.
"Six people in their twenties and thirties, living in New York City, trying to figure out life. Ross is a paleontologist going through a divorce. Rachel is a runaway bride who's never worked a real job. Monica is a chef with OCD tendencies. Chandler uses humor to deflect from his fear of commitment. Joey is an actor who's not very bright but has an incredible heart. And Phoebe is... well, Phoebe is Phoebe - a massage therapist who writes songs about smelly cats and believes in auras."
Just then, the door opened again.
