The cell was cold and quiet, and after a long moment of staring at the iron bars, Yan Rouxi let out a tired breath and sat down on the floor. Gu Yixuan followed her without a word and sat close enough that their shoulders touched.
Neither spoke for a while.
There was nothing they could do. There was no way to escape. For now, all they could do was wait.
Yan Rouxi closed her eyes, trying to calm her thoughts. Gu Yixuan did the same, leaning back against the wall with a controlled breath.
But the moment their bodies started to relax—
CLANK!
The door to the prison swung open.
Both of their eyes snapped open instantly. The guard from earlier stepped inside. Yan Rouxi stood up quickly, tension returning to her shoulders.
"Can we leave?" she asked.
The guard didn't respond. He didn't even look at her. He just placed a wooden tray on the floor and turned around to leave.
Yan Rouxi stared at his back, stunned. "Are we going to be killed?" she blurted out.
Again, no answer.
