When evening came, Selene felt more than exhausted. Her bones ached, but her mind felt even worse. It was a hollow, stretched-out tiredness.
Her brain was in complete shutdown, and yet she had failed. Over and over. The memory of the water sloshing wildly while Rocco thundered past played in her mind on a cruel loop.
Just as Zephyr had told her, he had only allowed one break for lunch. The rest of the day was pure struggle.
At first, Selene's frustration had been a hot, sharp thing. But by the end of the day, the fire had burned out, leaving only cold ashes. She was too tired to even glare at Zephyr.
